While the backstory in Saw IV has grown on me, I vastly (and I do mean vastly) prefer the backstory that Saw: Rebirth created for him. Him being such a normal and ordinary person with an unremarkable past and personal life prior to his cancer was what made him so fascinating to me, because he emerged from nothing to become something. And not only does Rebirth fit in much better with the films and perfectly fits in with the first three movies and John as he's depicted there, but the way it ties in with them is also great, and how it fills in the gaps; John is shown to have worked as a toymaker and engineer for an engineering company, he was diagnosed by Dr. Gordon at the hospital and he met Zep there, who showed him Paul, Mark and Amanda, and gave them more history to the overall storyline. I also liked the bits where he spied on those three and made their traps, and I also feel as a whole, his motivation in Rebirth is a unique one that fits very well with his philosophy as it came across in the first three movies and sets him apart from other serial killers.

Saw IV's backstory, I didn't care for very much; I felt the entire addition of the lost baby was unnecessary and unneeded for his character, because it seemed like he started his work out of revenge rather than a twisted need to "help" people, and also because it makes him out to be a stereotypical revenge killer when he wasn't like that at all to begin with. He worked because he was such an ordrinary and unremarkable figure prior to him becoming a killer, and for him to lose a baby and have that motivate him to start testing people, that just went against what was previously established and muddled his character and his motivations.

While the Saw IV backstory has grown on me, I much prefer Rebirth, and hope scenes of it are filmed in the next film or two eventually, I wish it would officially be recognized in the films.

For those of you who've never read Rebirth, here's the animated version of it:

I like Rebirth best for the reason you stated Jigsaw, but also because Leigh and James has endorsed it and they know FAR more than Dunstan and Melton do about Saw.

I agree. It was weird watching Saw IV and being told a different backstory about Jigsaw, and one that IMO wasn't nearly as effective as the other. I could see Saw IV's backstory working for Amanda, but Jigsaw was fine the way he was with Rebirth. IMO, he's not the type of killer to have a revengeful origin or motive.

Who knows what they reveal about John next, and they're gonna have to continue to add stuff because it's the only way he can exist and still be interesting.

I hope it's nothing that isn't needed. IMO, what's best for John at this point is to adapt scenes from Rebirth (which will thus better connect the later sequels to the original movie) and of course flashbacks that establish his past and connections with Hoffman, which Saw V is set to explore anyway. I also would like to see more flashbacks with him and Amanda, as I felt their relationship in Saw III was lacking and needed more screentime to develop better.

What can they really do with the Corbett plot now? Has it been said if they would reveal what happened to her?

Yes, it's been said that Corbett's fate will be revealed in Saw V. I also think I read an interview where one of the writers discussed an ending that was shot for Saw IV involving Corbett that may be used in Saw V instead.

I hope it's resolved nicely, it wouldn't be fair if anything happened to that little girl.

I wonder if the unused ending from Saw IV might be used as the beginning for Saw V?

That would seem like the best thing to do.

I tell ya, it makes John seem even more sinister by using a child in one of his games.

I prefer "bitter old man who likes to play God" because that's basically what it all boils down to.

I agree. And as far as we could tell, Amanda never endangered any children (it's possible she knew of Corbett, but with Hoffman being involved, he could've been the one who procured Corbett in the first place). John can't think of himself as a good man when he puts people in situations where they die slowly and painfully, and where children are endangered.

It's actually a goof on Dunstan and Melton's behalf to even add the whole Gideon thing when it's shown that John didn't even have regard for a child's safety in Saw III. Someone who has lost a child will not put another child in danger (Think Pamela Voorhees, who was actually trying to save future kids by getting the camp shutdown.)

That's another reason why I feel the entire subplot with John losing a child doesn't work for him. Then again, John became so deluded with his philosophy that he pretty much seperated from himself.

John really is a hustler, preying on the troubled and the weak minded to get his followers. The Kool-Aid is the only thing that separates him from Jim Jones.

I always thought it would've been interesting to see him on trial and how he'd defend himself.

He'd drive the jury and the judge crazy with his non stop preaching, just as he did Eric.

He'd be found guilty right away and get a harsher sentence for his obvious denial of being a killer.
