While the backstory in Saw IV has grown on me, I vastly (and I do mean vastly) prefer the backstory that Saw: Rebirth created for him. Him being such a normal and ordinary person with an unremarkable past and personal life prior to his cancer was what made him so fascinating to me, because he emerged from nothing to become something. And not only does Rebirth fit in much better with the films and perfectly fits in with the first three movies and John as he's depicted there, but the way it ties in with them is also great, and how it fills in the gaps; John is shown to have worked as a toymaker and engineer for an engineering company, he was diagnosed by Dr. Gordon at the hospital and he met Zep there, who showed him Paul, Mark and Amanda, and gave them more history to the overall storyline. I also liked the bits where he spied on those three and made their traps, and I also feel as a whole, his motivation in Rebirth is a unique one that fits very well with his philosophy as it came across in the first three movies and sets him apart from other serial killers.
Saw IV's backstory, I didn't care for very much; I felt the entire addition of the lost baby was unnecessary and unneeded for his character, because it seemed like he started his work out of revenge rather than a twisted need to "help" people, and also because it makes him out to be a stereotypical revenge killer when he wasn't like that at all to begin with. He worked because he was such an ordrinary and unremarkable figure prior to him becoming a killer, and for him to lose a baby and have that motivate him to start testing people, that just went against what was previously established and muddled his character and his motivations.
While the Saw IV backstory has grown on me, I much prefer Rebirth, and hope scenes of it are filmed in the next film or two eventually, I wish it would officially be recognized in the films.
For those of you who've never read Rebirth, here's the animated version of it:
