I am so looking forward to this movie. I love the first 2 and this one looks to be just as good. Only thing I don't like is they are claiming this is going to be the last one with 'Alice' (Milla Jovovich) in it. Not that the franchise won't continue, but that the character won't be in anymore. :(

Not that the franchise won't continue, but that the character won't be in anymore.
1000% good. Alice is the worst thing to happen to Resident Evil since Steve Burnside.
Not that I dislike Milla -- she's well fit -- but her character's introduction into the Resident Evil mythos was redundant, and as a result the characters who should have rightly featured were either AWOL or side players. :brow:
And yet I'll be seeing this anyway. Glutton for punishment, that's me.

I remember hearing a rumor somewhere that there was talk of rebooting the franchise in a few years to make movies that more closely resembled the games. There could be some promise to that, just because a direct adaptation of RE4 would be the most bad-ass action movie ever made.

A direct adaption of RE4 would make me cream. I doubt will get one but it would be Awesome.
I've been wanting to see a movie version of RE 4 since I played the game. Damn it Hollywood, get on it!

I hear Ali Larter is playing Claire Redfield...
I've always felt she's completely wrong for the part. Wrong age, wrong attitude, wrong build... just plain wrong.*
And using Claire Redfield without first introducing Chris is ignorant. The fact that they plan to introduce Wesker in this film as the generic Kill-Alice guy annoys me most of all.
*The above statements are true for both Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield.

I think Ali Larter with her body from Heroes and hair from Final Destination 1 could really look the part, and I suppose she's a pretty decent actress so I'll wait and see with that.
I agree with the 'without introducing chris' comment. It its extremely dumb and just a slap in the face to the fans. I don't need it to be canon with the games or even follow the same storyline, but to add characters like Wesker and fuck with them is just dumb.

If she had walked right out of Final Destination and into Resident Evil, I probably could have accepted it then. Claire Redfield was only 18 years old, after all, and I just don't buy Larter now at being that age. Not that Paul WS Anderson will probably keep her age correct anyway. As badly as he botched Jill's character in the second film, I'm expecting horror -- and not the good kind -- from both Claire and Wesker.
If Anderson had said from word one that he didn't plan to stick to the game in any way, shape or form, that would have been fair enough. But he didn't. He made false promises that the next film would follow closer to the games, and it didn't -- Nemesis, Jill and Carlos do not a faithful adaptation make.
I'm not asking for the game-on-screen, but I do ask that if someone wants to adapt a source material that they don't warp it completely beyond recognition. That's what Anderson has done to Resident Evil, in my opinion.

I am interested to see how this movie is, compared to the last two made....the first one was well done, it combined parts of the first game and the second. The second movie was alot like the 3rd game (Resident Evil 3:Nemesis) .... and for this one to work, they have to incorporate something of the games into it, which hopefully they do well

Seeing as all we got in Apocalypse was a Mean Bitch (sic) dressed in Jill Valentine's street clothes, it's not a major loss. At least we get Carlos, but even he was hardly a shadow of the character he was based on. :meh:

You make a good point in that regard. I remember seeing a picture of her in costume before the film came out and thinking, "Wow, she's well fit."
Too bad about that distracting "character" that was written for her. :shifty:
Apparently, you can thank the film Eragon for her not appearing in Extinction. They offered her the role, but she had to turn it down. I wonder if Larter was only brought in to replace her, which I suppose might explain why Claire appears to be another Mean Bitch (sic), despite how that conflicts with the character's personality.

I absolutely could not stand these films. I refuse to see this one, as I have refused to see the 2nd. I managed to catch the ending of the second when it was on Cinemax and laughed myself through the last hour. Rediculous. It's sad that the games have more of a scare feeling and horror element than these dumb excuses for a horror flick.

You know, that poster has me wondering something. If Alice has all these Umbrella-bequeathed superpowers, what's she need the guns for? Didn't the ending of Apocalypse evidence that she could pretty much lobotomize somebody just by thinking about it?

If Alice has all these Umbrella-bequeathed superpowers, what's she need the guns for?
Presumably because Paul WS Anderson opted not to follow up on his the greatest enemy is in one's self angle that seemed to be the direction they would go after Apocalypse. I remember thinking at the time that the third film could potentially be pretty nifty, but then I started hearing about this the planet is mostly dead, and we'll get that point across by filling Las Vegas with sand nonsense, and my expectations plummeted through the floor.
Of course I'll see it, and with my expectations so low I'm at least bound to enjoy myself, however if Alice bitch slaps Wesker into next Thursday with barely a thought or a twitch, I'm liable to leave before the film is over. And I've never left before a film has ended.

I still don't get why Las Vegas is covered in sand. Just because everyone is dead, why would that make all the sand come? And I loved the first RE, but the 2nd one was a little dumb. I still don't get why Las Vegas is covered in sand. Just because everyone is dead, why would that make all the sand come?
That's the same question I've been asking for nearly a year now. No one seems to have an answer.
I'm assuming there'll be some throw away jargon that suggest it was Umbrella what done it, to which I'll just say, "Err, what?", shake my head sadly and continue to watch the film as though they never tried to explain the whole "the United States is a desert" thing (if you look at the high shots of the Earth in the teaser, you'll see it's not just Vegas -- most of America is covered in sand).
If they blame it on the t-virus, I'm going to be mildly annoyed.
FreddyKR
07-23-2007, 07:13 AM
lol...I guess the t-virus causes sand to cover up the world. You know what would be cool, if it was water instead...and they could make it a Resident Evil Water World cross over movie...haha that would be sweet.

I assumed the place was nuked like Raccoon City in the sequel. Vegas is desert anyway so maybe the natural enviroment simply took hold of the city, which wouldn't have had any help rebuilding itself or cleaning up the devastation if the world went to shit.

Interesting new trailer. The clone stuff seems weird but not unexpected from Umbrella so I'm waiting to see how it's treated.
I love how the desert siege look like the final shot of Undead with all these zombies in a desert area, except this time, it seems the humans are the captive ones ! I always love the super-powered Alice (super heroes Vs zombies is a great idea). I love Ali Larter since FD and Heroes. The dogs are always great looking, and now there are the birds ! And I believe I saw a great looking Tyrant in a few shots.
The RE movie trilogy is certainly far from the game storyline now, but I kinda love this what if. The games, the books, the movies. 3 differents ways to enjoy Resident Evil !
I just hope it will give the trilogy a proper ending.

So the T-virus leaks, spreads across the entire planet, and causes the United States to become a whopping big desert. Apparently, the reasons for this occurrence are unexplained My best friend went and saw the film last night, and he reported back to me on certain aspects. He reckons the USA covered in sand bit was mother nature's way of trying to stop folks fucking up her junk. I imagine the weather forecast for a continental sandstorm must have looked something like this:

Oh, and for those of you who were banking on this film being the last -- or even the final installment of some spiritual 'trilogy' -- you can forget it. The film is left wide up to nosedive directly into another shitty sequel, utilizing the same characters and continuous "plot". And it will very likely be set in Tokyo, as we once heard about a year ago in connection with the plot for RE 4.
If you're eager to see Hunters or Lickers or Giant Sharks or Giant Spiders, you can forget those too. The film features zombies, crows, a tyrant, and a single scene with the rotten dogs. That's it. And Albert Wesker spends the entire film sitting in a chair. The same chair. In every scene. And the fact that he's the CEO of Umbrella flies in the face of everything that was awesome about the character in the first place.
I'm also trying to figure out exactly why it is Alice can move things with the power of her mind, but they actually try to create tension by putting her weapons a couple of inches from her hands, making her reach desperately for them... when she very obviously could have moved the goddamn things with the power of her mind the whole time. :duh:
Claire is a robot. She's stiff and militaristic and never once is her brother mentioned, which makes no sense given that her brother was pretty much her entire motivation in RE 2 and Code Veronica X. Yeah, I get that she's not exactly the same as she was in the games, but they may as well have just introduced a completely new character rather than slap a familiar name on her to create brand familiarity.
This series represents a rotting cinematic hole in my heart. It's gotten to the point where it's beyond circling the drain, but I just can't not watch it. :misery: Brand loyalty is a real bitch.

the entire movie except for the ending and a scene at the beginning with Alice in Salt Lake City which is not a desert takes place in the Nevada desert it never says or imolies that the entire US is a desert all it says is most countries have become a baron wasteland, and the only returning character from the all 3 films that can be in another sequal is Alice everyone else from part 2 dies, and Claire didn't seem wooden at all, and her and her few remaining convoy members take a Helicopter to go to a town in Alaska where it seems the Virus hasn't spread. I do agree that more variation on the Bio-Hazards(that's what they're called in the movie) would have been cool. but it's a fun way to waste 90 minutes

I actually just finished watching the movie about a hour ago, and it is a good Movie, Fast paced and for those of you who dont like it because your stuck on the video games its a shame. Because the movies in my opinon are like a game of there own. Like whats the fun in taken the games 110% and make them scene for scene onto the screen it would seem redundent and somewhat boring because we would all know what would happen next. I like the addition of a new character, in the original Resident Evil bringing in Alice as the movies main character is like how we played Chris RedField, Claire..Jill, and such and such.. in the games sure I would have liked to see a game Hero, or Heroine be the main character but I think they did a outstanding job on the franchise and the movies. I am a huge Zombie movie Fan INfact i have all of George Romero's Films, remakes of his films, and still collecting Zombie Flicks... They are great entertainment.. and the third film is entertaining people you think should live die, and it does leave a gapping whole for a fourth film, there has always been talk of 4 resident evil films instead of 3 and I know its just a matter of time before we hear the familar headline Resident Evil 4 In the works. and it might be out in 2009 or 10

I watched this film today and I liked it. I enjoyed the whole "caravan in the desert" theme, and the cloning experiments. It was really cool how they brought back elements from the first film, like the mansion and "laser room".
I actually thought this film was a lot darker than the first two due to the atmosphere of hopelessness. It really was a solid entry, although I agree that Claire may as well have been an entirely different character because she had nothing in common with the Claire from the games.
As for the ending, it pretty much declares there is a fourth. This film grossed enough for it to be a possibility right?

Saw it today, and hell I liked it, a lot! It seemed a lot more slick than the first two, which I enjoyed immensly. I'm not a fan of the games, which could be why I enjoy these films so much. I can't pick holes or compare characters from the film with those from the game, which is good I guess.
I've read the Apocalypse novel, and so when I was watching this I felt I knew the characters really well, which made watching them die really hard. Especially Carlos, who I always thought was going to survive. I thought the director could have handled his and Alice's romance a bit better too, rather than just a quick peck we could have had a real, emotional farewell. Claire seemed like a right hard bitch, too.
Good film, well worth a second viewing..... eventually.

I've just seen this on DVD few nights ago. Not surprisingly, the best part of the entire experience was the trailer for Resident Evil: Degeneration. So let's do a quick report card, won't we?
Characters
Alice: same as ever.
Jill Valentine: missing in action without so much as a mention.
Angela Ashford: see Jill.
Carlos Olivera: completely wasted.
Claire Redfield: had potential, but was a bigger waste of screen time than Carlos.
K-Mart: cute but superfluous.
Albert Wesker: Well they manged not to ruin him entirely. Pity he just sat in a chair pointing a menacing finger through the whole film.
Red Shirts: pretty much sums up the rest of the cast.
Plot
Not as disgustingly bad as the previous two films, but so far removed from the spirit of Resident Evil that it may as well have been another film (the minute it was revealed that the T-virus was decaying the planet, I pretty much switched my brain off and went into auto pilot).
Over all, this film is a lot more enjoyable than the previous films. But like I said, it's so far removed from Resident Evil it might as well be something all it's own. The direction was okay, but Charlie Clouser's score was made of win. It was by far the best part of the film, and tramples over the music in the first two films.
Oh, and the fact that they try to pass off Dr. Isaacs as a Tyrant is flat out insulting. There's nothing even slightly Tyrant about that thing. It's more like a mix of a really hyped up zombie and a Bandersnatch.

Wesker's role in the games is far too vast to explain here. But a truncated version is this: Wesker is a bad ass motherfucker who has been manipulating everything that happens from the first game onward. He fakes his death, comes back as a super being, manipulates Jill and Chris into bringing Umbrella down, then steals Umbrella's assets and sets up his own version of Umbrella.
The hints that are given at the end of Separate Ways suggests that the setting of Resident Evil 5 will be in the midst of a full out BOW war between Wesker's Umbrella and a company called S.
The bare basics are this: Wesker has become the lynch pin on which the franchise hangs.

I watched this tonight, and I'd have to say it's pretty much the definition of mediocre. It was nowhere near as terrible as the first film, but it's not very good, either. I actually enjoyed the second film a bit, and was hoping that this would improve on that. Instead, we barely get a plot, and pretty much every character is wasted. On top of all of that, we don't even find out what happens to the group that heads for Alaska. Why introduce an entire cast of characters only to completely forget about them later. Anyway, the end of this one indicates that there might be another one of these, but I'm pleading with these guys to not even bother. Just give the franchise a rest for a while and reboot it in a few years. I'm willing to give it a mulligan if we get a film that actually resembles anything from the first game. Oh, and please keep Paul W.S. Anderson far, far away.

As far as I'm concerned, the live-action films should just be retired indefinitely. If Degeneration is half as good as its teaser trailer looks, I'd prefer to just have Capcom and Sony release a CGI film based on the video game franchise every couple of years.

If that's the case though and if that did happen, then I say let the live action series continue to where ever it's going. It's veered off enough to make it's own path and it has it's own fans. Let them enjoy that while we get to enjoy CGI Claire and Jill goodness.

If the continuation of the live action series affects the chances of a CGI franchise -- which is not unprecedented, even if in reverse -- then I'd rather see the live-action franchise vanish.

I picked this up at Sam's Club today for $20 in a double pack with Starship Troopers. Not bad when the RE DVD is $18 by itself.

This movie stunk.....The plot just seems ass backwards compared to the games storyline. Which is ten times better.

Perhaps "Resident Alice" would have been a more appropiate title? That or "Mary-Sue: The Movie"?

I wonder where Jill Valentine is?
I actually just found on the net where it said that Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine) was going to reprise her role but had prior commitments to Eragon. I wish she had been in Extinction. Kinda odd why they never mentioned her throughout the entire movie when she was in the van with the other 3 at the end of Apacolypse.

It's because they basically removed Jill and replaced her with Claire Redfield. I reckon the convoy was originally going to be under her care; that she and Carlos were the ones running the thing after Alice up and vanished. I found it annoying that her whereabouts were left untouched upon.

I know.....no mention of her character at all. Kinda odd.

Definitly Jeans. "Claire" is basically a barely re-written RE:A Jill. I don' think they even tried to hide it.
