I used to listen to rap alot when I was younger. I haven't listened to it at all in years.
I prefer the old school rap/hip hop over the newer stuff that's out. I liked NWA, Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Spice 1, 2 Pac, Compton's Most Wanted, etc. Stuff like that.

I like the female rap artists the most. I am a huge fan of Khia. She has a 3rd album coming out this May called Nasti Muzik. In case anyone has heard of the song "My Neck, My Back" (Lick It), she is the one who sang that.
Here is her MySpace with a couple new songs from her forthcoming 3rd album:

I totally agree, except it isn't much today...it's been like that for years. I often think Hip Hop gets a bad name because of what people see and hear on the radio or tv. They see 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Jay Z (I respect this man, but not as a rapper), Puff Daddy, etc. and they assume thats what hip hop is about, while real hip hop heads shun these folks.

Agreed. Ice Cube has never changed. There might be a song here or there that could be considered a party song, but he's never changed his style or what he's talking about. He keeps it 100% real, and, imo, he's underrated...well, at least by a lot of the younger generation, who are stuck listening to Soulja Boy.

KRS is the man. There isn't a thing he does that isn't gold to me.
As soon as The Carter 3 came out, Wayne became unlistenable. Anything he put out before that was amazing. The mixtape barrage he released the two years leading up to Carter 3 was by far the best thing rap has seen.
J Cole, to me, right now is at the top of his game. If you aren't bumpin' J Cole you're behind.
Drake/Jay are super overrated. I personally haven't liked Jay since Blueprint 2.

The Dynasty Album, The Blueprint, and The Black Album were his best albums and they all came out after Volume 3.
You named your favorites as Wu Tang (Greatest group ever, but they haven't had half the catolouge of Jay, collectively as a group or with solo projects), Mobb Deep (Fell off after Murda Musik), Sigel (Great rapper. But hasn't had a good album since The B.Coming). So your Jay-Z falling off after Volume 3 argument doen't hold much weight, considering most of your picks don't have a discography to match his, nor the longevity that he has.

You're comparing a group with inner tremendous inner turmoil and extremely huge egos that disrupt tours and recording to one dude. That's not even fair. "I'm the bomb like tick-tick" is a classic line, dude.
As for Jay -- I don't know, dude just seems the same to me each time he's out. People usually switch shit up, display a different flow or something. The only time Jay switches it up is to sound like another rapper, and that rapper is usually Wayne. See "We Go Hard" as a reference point.
Venus vs. Mars is pretty much his most original song, and that shit was just out so that's gotta make you think a little.

Jay always borrowed his flows. He's always talking about bring a trendsetter and he may be a trendsetter socially, but he never set no trends musically...everything he rapped about, his flows...have all already been done. He had some dope shit, but never did nothing "new".
And Lil Wayne...smh, I'd rather stick needles in my ear while listening to a tornado siren for 3 minutes that to hear that dudes voice. He makes me cringe.

Rae hasn't been the same in years. He doesn't have half the longevity that Jay has. Jay still hops on tracks with dudes half his age and outshines them most of the time.
I'm sorry, I just can't discuss Hip Hop with someone who doesn't at least respect Jay's rhymes. He's got critically acclaimed albums, a better flow than 95% of other rappers, sick wordplay, the list goes on and on...

Umm, I don't like Jay-Z's music either and never saw all the hype about him being one of the greatest. His style is boring to me. And Cuban Linx 2, sick ass album by the way, it just came out last year.
I don't like Drake, Wayne, Jay, Eminem, 50 cent and (as the GZA refers to them) the "flea unit," or most of the crap the commercial radio stations are trying to shove down our throats.
Here are some I like Rakim, although I will admit he needs an awesome producer badly because sadly an MC can't get by on lyrics and flow alone they need dope beats too, some Nas, Damian Marley (if he can be considered a rapper LOL,) Jedi Mind Tricks, Canibus, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Guru/Gang Starr, Common, Immortal Technique, some of Tech N9ne's stuff, 2pac, Biggie, Big L, anything by the Wu, Lupe Fiasco, The Procussions, some of Rhymefest's stuff, Kurupt, Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Slick Rick, LA Symphony.
There's more, but I don't feel like posting them all. I also like some of Kanye's stuff, but that dude has way too much of an ego and is inconsistent. He seems better on the mic when he's on tracks that are not his own.

I was talking about 2009's Cuban Linx 2. It's a perfect example of how if an oldhead puts his mind to it, he can still make something ill.
But wow...again...the "hater" aspect. I could give a fuck if he makes 100's of billions of dollars and has 4 wives. I don't care.

Agreed, & No Ceilings was probably one of the best mixtapes of 2009, if not the best. Wayne doesn't get the credit he deserves, & it seems like a lot of haters just jumped on the bandwagon because it's the "cool" thing to do to hate on him. Wayne's got talent, that's undeniable. And his work ethic is pretty amazing, if you ask me.

I'm not gonna try and call anyone out as a "hater" because that's just weak. I will say though that both Jay-Z and 50 Cent are legendary. Some people just hate commercial-popular music because of what it is: able to be sold and popular among the vast majority of fans. I wasn't actually trying to call anyone here out as a hater. I was referring to others I've talked to where it's just blind hate & no legitimate reason behind disliking said person (in this instance, Lil' Wayne).
As I said, I think 50 is a Legend, but some of his material can be lazy. If he really wanted to, he could be making hit after hit, but he seems to be more focused with the business side of things these days. However, I thought Before I Self Destruct was a really good album, & better than most are willing to give it credit for.
Not a huge hip-hop fan but as a casual listener and fan, I can safely say that I like 50 better than Jay-Z (and I am not a huge fan of either).

I've listened to a pretty good amount of Jay-Z's material, & I've still never liked him all that much. I don't despise the dude, but I think he's too overrated. He makes some good music, but there are a lot of artists out there who are far better than him.
Jay-Z is probably the most versatile artist in terms of flows. He never brings the same one twice.

I don't hate on any of those dudes, I just don't like their music. It doesn't capture my ear.
I wouldn't consider 50 a legend, the only album I liked by him was Power of the Dollar. I expected big things from him when he signed with Dre, but I've been massively disappointed by everything he's done since then.
I remember Lil Wayne when he was running with Cash Money. A few years go by and all of a sudden I'm hearing "he's the best rapper out there!" Not even close. He's notorious for biting rhymes from artists that are better than him and his voice annoys me. I'd rather hear The D.O.C spit original rhymes through his fucked up and shredded vocal chords.
As for Jay, he's got some dope tracks, it's just not enough to make me a big fan of his and like I mentioned above, he just doesn't catch my ear. "The Takeover" was a sick ass diss song though.
One thing I've always loved about hip hop was a good battle. When rappers get on the mic and diss each other on record, that's how it should go down. None of that stupid street fighting and gun play garbage, keep the beef on wax.

I'm a fan of Hip Hop up until around 1995 and some things after. I'm a huge fan of Wu, Gangstarr (RIP Guru), Gravediggaz, Black Moon, Redman, A Tribe Called Quest, Nice and Smooth, Smif & Wesson, Poor Righteous Teachers, Biggie, Pharcyde, Onyx, and old Mobb Deep. Of course there are others I enjoy but not as consistent. NAS is great when he's on as is Jay Z. I think Eminem is one of the best rappers of the last twenty years. Not a fan of many other newer rappers. I've only heard the non-mixtape stuff from Lil Wayne and am not impressed. Fifty can fuck off.

so i've been selling a bunch of old rap cassette tapes on ebay that i've had for years. i had TONS of them. i'd have liked to keep them just to collect them, but i don't even have a tape player anymore, they just collect dust, and i might as well make some money off them. i sold 2 batches with 60 tapes each, and got like $40 each.
then this week i put up just 6 tapes... Beanie Sigel's, State Property's and Raekwon's first tape. i got at least 10 e-mails asking me "is the Raekwon tape purple"? well yes the tape was purple. anyway, it just sold for $75.00 :D
so DiMidio, what's up with them Wu Tang tapes and people wanting the purple ones?
i still actually have a couple hundred tapes left, but some i am keeping just to keep. if i'm ever dead broke then i'll put them all up. i think i have ODB's first tape, the first 2 Wu's, and all of 2Pac's. i bet the 2Pac ones would bring big bucks, but i figure the longer i wait, the higher prices i'll get for them.

The purple tape is highly wanted. Man, I remember buying that shit with my allowance in 95 and running home to open it. There is only one purple tape "Only Built For Cuban Linx"...it was just a novelty at the time. But it's considered by alot of people to be the greatest Wu Tang effort, and without a doubt one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Personally, its my favorite Wu Tang related cd, and definitely in my top 10 albums of ANY genre.
When they repressed the casette versions of Raekwons album, the tape was a regular tape. So people really seek that purple tape. In any hip hop discussion, if you mention "The Purple Tape" people will immediately know what you're talking about.
You should fetch alot for the casettes online. Haha @ beanie sigel. I used to run into him around my brothers way in south philly...that dude is too gone off drugs.

Heavy D passed away, R.I.P.
The always jovial “overweight lover Heavy D” passed away earlier today. Born, Dwight Arrington Myers, the 44-year-old rap star was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles this morning after having called his manager, complaining that he “didn’t feel well,” according to Susan Anderson, who works with Heavy’s camp and talked to EBONY on behalf of Heavy’s “longtime manager and friend” Jeff Christie.
The exact cause of death is unknown at this time, but the rapper had been traveling for a solid five or six weeks, according to his manager. Anderson also says that Heavy suffered from bronchitis and walking pneumonia.
“We do not have all the details,” says Anderson. “Heavy did call Jeff this morning and told Jeff he was not feeling well and that he had walking pneumonia and bronchitis. And that is what we know. He did call for an ambulance. They were not able to revive him."
this is his best song ...........

I trust you folks have all heard about the latest hip hop "beef" currently going down.
If not, it's between Common and Drake. All I've got to say is Drake should've listened to Common's "Bitch in yoo" track before he opened his mouth, LOL.
Common struck first with the track "Sweet" off his latest album, which was a damn good album. He claims the track was about no one in particular but also said if anyone thinks the track is about them then it is and welcomed anyone to get at him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xufsZcvbT3Q
Drake took offense and decided to open his mouth. He struck back on the Rick Ross track "Stay Schemin." Skip to 1:30 for Drake's verse.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQbVsbP-aZg
Common responded immediately with a "Stay Schemin remix" where he jacked the beat, took out Drake's verse and put his own along with a sample.

For the record, I'm not a fan of Drake at all. The dude's got skills I guess but all these new rappers on the radio sound the same. I can't even listen to the radio these days.

I liked Joe Budden a lot more before he was down with Slaughterhouse. LOL, nice! I agree, that's why I put the word beef in quotes. It wouldn't surprise me if it was all fabricated just to sell records and Drake and Common end up doing songs together.
I agree about Drake having no skills. What I meant when I said I guess he has skills is because so many people rank him highly but I just don't see why. He's done nothing to support his claims that he's "the greatest ever."
As for Common being overrated, by some people I guess.

Jay-Z is always gonna be the greatest of all time but right now today in 2012,
Rick Ross (Rich Forever ain't his best but it's still solid)
Meek Mill (that Dreamchasers tape was the best mixtape of last year)
Young Jeezy (TM103 is fire)
Troy Ave (new Brooklyn MC with incredible charisma)
PUSH! Montana (another new Brooklyn MC with a lot of talent and lyrical depth)
Wu-Tang (forever)
Joe Budden (consistently dope, his No Church in the Wild freestyle was insane)
Kanye West (obviously still one of the best all around musicians in the game today)
Drake (he has bars when he wants to, and I like the rap/singing mix when it's done right)
2 Chainz (brilliant ignorance, you can tell he's having so much fun when he raps and he's washed everyone he's done tracks with, including Jadakiss)
Young Jeezy is on a little too much of that ignorant shit for me. My brother bought me TM 103 for Christmas (mainly because he's a big time hip-hop head who loves the music the way that I love horror films) and I have to say that Jeezy is very one dimensional. The best moments of that album come when Fab and Jada appear on "O.J." and even that song is mediocre at best. The guest spot by Jay-Z on "I Do" was a huge disappointment too.

yeah that Jay verse was weak, but as far as one dimension goes I see your point but Jeezy always says he's speaking for the streets and that's the truth. He spits real talk and breaks down the game for people who are in the game. He makes some of the best street music out there and he does it with such simplicity that anyone in the game can understand it and relate.
Plus.....on TM103 he had songs that were straight tough talk, songs for females, that F.A.M.E. joint, the Jill Scott song, he branched out a little.
oh and I can't believe I forgot the best rapper in the game right now when making my list......Freddie Gibbs
Gibbs is a rapper's rapper, he can do it all, his flow is ridiculous and he can float over any production (as evidenced by the incredible job he did on Madlib production) and he is just pure talent when it comes to rapping.
Best rapper in the game right now today ---> Freddie Gibbs

Kingdom Come may not have been great but Jay has never dropped a bad album, unlike Nas who got a minimum of 2 absolutely terrible albums (Nastradamus and Street's Disciple)
And as far as Nas >> Jay.........uh..........you're kidding right? Jay is building empires, launching businesses all over the world, just finished one of the biggest tours ever with Kanye, and continues to drop hit records while Nas is......paying alimony, owing 6 million in taxes, and still doesn't have a release date for an album for which he dropped a single last July that barely made waves.
As far as opinion goes you can like Nas more but there is absolutely no one who even comes close to rivaling Jay-Z as the greatest of all time

Blueprint 2 and 3 were both good and American Gangster was great. And all those albums, again, may not have been classics, but they weren't "bad" by any stretch of the imagination, every single one had joints on it. Yes they had more shitty songs than some of his other albums, but none of the albums were flat out bad. The closest was Kingdom Come and even that had some jewels on it.
And what's Ether vs. Takeover got to do with it? That shit was 10 years ago, let it go. Plus, Takeover was better anyways, Jay was personal with it, any kindergartener could have said "gay-z and cock-a-fella records" "dick suckin lips" all that cornball shit.
Again it's all a matter of opinion, and if you are talking about the GOAT you gotta take into account a rapper's whole career, everything they did throughout that career in and out of rap, and by that standard Jay is far superior to Nas.
and yes....Watch the Throne was incredibly underwhelming, but it had gems on it too, only like 2 or 3, but still, Otis is HYPE and that Paris joint is a solid hit
ADDED:
I love when people mixup business entrepreneurship with lyrical skills:duh:

But Big L is dead....
and he only dropped 1 album.
You can't judge someone off 1 album and say they are better than anyone else that's done any more than 1 album.
I get it, if Big L were alive blah blah blah.....but he's not, and that's what you have to go on, the actual facts, not could have beens or should have beens
Believe me I'll be the first to acknowledge Big L's lyrically greatness (and wish he could have stayed around longer to sign with Roc-A-Fella like he was gonna do) but he is long gone and you gotta just move on.
I might even say.....on most days, that Big Pun >>> Big L. Big L was a punchline rapper and basically nothing more where as Pun could do everything and was super lyrical with an insane flow

If you wanna take business and what not out of it, and hit making skills, then Canibus is the greatest rapper ever. Thing is, production and the ability to make hits does matter and does need to be taken into account when discussing the greats. Otherwise the greatest rapper ever is some no name rapper on some random corner who has never recorded a single song as far as we know.
Also, impact is relevant. With Nas, he will never reach the audiences that Jay has. His business ventures and success have given him the opportunity to be a true source of inspiration to the youth. Nas rants and raves outside of Fox News and no one pays attention but Jay-Z has created a scholarship foundation which helps kids get money for college. Jay makes a song for his new born baby and it can help influence a generation of young dads to be a part of their kids lives because that is such a problem these days. His success and his ability to remain relevant even when he's dropping not-so-great records is a testament to his talent. If it was just about lyrics then again, Canibus would be the best ever, but "if skills sold truth be told, I'd probably be, lyrically Talib Kweli". Also, "I can't help the poor if I'm one of them, so I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win win".
As far as biting, "I say a Big verse I'm only biggin' up my brother". Look, hip hop was founded on the idea of biting, stealing other people's songs and making them your own. People been stealing lines forever, it's nothing new and it's never been a real problem. The problem arises when you steal an image, a style. All the people that have been clowned in rap's history for biting have stolen entire styles from other people, not just a few bars here and there. Look at "Lodi Dodi" by Snoop Dogg, that's an entire song stolen and redone, but it's on one of the best albums ever.
In Decoded Jay speaks about how using those Biggie lines is a way of keeping Biggie alive in spirit always. He's not doing it out of disrespect or laziness but as a way to pay homage. Plus, what rapper hasn't gotten on stage and said "throw ya hands in the air and wave 'em like you just don't care" ??

When I said notorious biting ass dude...I didn't mean notorious b.i.g literally haha...i meant him stealing songs and concepts from his own signed artists from Rocafella, and other places, and that shit being known and common knowledge...notorious like that. Just straight jacking their shit. It goes back even further...he stole "Feeling It", a single from his first album, from Camp Lo. Dude has a great business mind and shit, no doubt, but he was never really original. Coattail riding ass dude.
And Canibus is mad horrible!!! He was nice from like 97-2001...and Im not even talking about his horrible beat selections...Im just talking about him being mad corny for at least a decade, with horrible forced rhymes, bad flow, etc.
This is something we're going to have to agree to disagree upon. You're never gonna get me to say Jay is better than Nas...it's just never going to happen. I've been listening to Nas since Illmatic first came out. Im not even here saying Nas is the GOAT (Jay isn't either though), he's just better than Jay. I thought so in the 90's, and still think so today.
You continue to bring up shit that happens outside of music. Im telling you, it doesnt matter a bit to me. Neither of these dudes is the GOAT, and Nas could worship the devil and eat infants, it wouldn't matter to me one bit. Im talking about sitting down and hearing some ill shit, not eating grey poupon and laughing with Warren Buffet, straight up verses and rhymes......no way Jay is seeing Nas. Pretty Toney is incredible. There isn't one Ghostface album I don't like, I even love the R&B album he dropped a couple years ago.
Ironman was part of the original 7, five year plan and I think that's why it's always been more special to me. Plus....on Supreme Clientele he was just all types of dusted and spitting stuff that made no sense at all, he's even acknowledged that. So even though we all love the lyrical complexity of joints like "Nutmeg" and "One", truth is those are nothing more than dust trips and alcohol infused nonsense.
One of the best tracks out right now....by far Maino's best verse and PUSH! is one of the best up and comers in the game and with lines like "due to my fast paced lifestyle, my side chicks is my wife now" he's dropping gems that are so true and so rarely spoken it's absolutely incredible

Ghost has never dropped a bad album, every single release has been solid. His weakest effort I thought was More Fish and that was just crowded with Theodore Unit and unnecessary remixes.

A Philly rapper got shot in the head in the middle of filming a video with 100 people outside, then ran over with a car. Dead.
People are saying it was Cassidy...I hope not :(

A 33-year-old up and coming rapper was shot to death while shooting a video in his own Philadelphia neighborhood. The shooting occurred in the Olney section of Philadelphia, where the as yet unidentified man was shot in the head and then ran over. The video was being recorded near the security cameras of a restaurant, which apparently captured the violent and deadly incident. According to ABC 6 News, there was a crowd so large at the corner of 5th Street and Tabor Road during the rap video taping, undercover Philadelphia police officers were watching over it. That's when they saw a 33-year-old man being gunned down in the street. Police say more than 100 people were gathered for the recording when around 7:00 p.m. shots rang out striking the victim.
In the melee, a car accidentally ran over the victim who had been shot in the head, he was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The officers who were on the scene grabbed potential suspects, three of whom had guns on them.

I really don't think its Cassidy though, I believe Cassidy is my age (29) and not 33
Wikipedia has him listed as July 7, 1979 (age 32). I know it's only Wikipedia, but it's usually pretty reliable when it comes to DOB's and shit.

I'm not too big on rap now. I used to listen to it sometimes when I was younger. I was going through some of my rap albums to sell, and I came across one from Brotha Lynch Hung. My one friend bought it at a dollar store when we were in Northbrook. It actually has some good songs on there. I can't remember the guys name, but his voice is just.....awkward. He kind of brings the album down. This song has a pretty cool beat.

I remember that album! That one's pretty old school....around 1993 or 1994 I think? From what I remember of his material, this one is his best and most hardcore album. I might actually have to get this one.

It came out in 1995 and yes I have to agree it's his best. I'm not a big rap fan, more into old school punk and metal, but I do like Brotha Lynch Hung. He has a few other albums worth checking out. Nothing beats Season of da Siccness though, IMO.

Nice! Old school metal (especially death metal ) is my bread and butter. Yeah, his earlier stuff was the hardest rap around. I think the one before that was 21 Deep. But Season is definitely his best, I agree. I think he's into horror movies, because some his lyrics almost have a gore vibe to them, haha.

Di, are you into Spice 1 at all? From 1992-1995, I thought his albums were pretty good. I still have 187 He Wrote and 1990 Sick.

Do any of you guys remember pre-Ice Cream Man Master P? I liked him in the days when he was hard. The Ghettos Tryin' to Kill Me was always my favorite by him. It's such a huge difference when you listen to those early 90's albums and now, where he's all Nickelodeon, haha.

As much as I would love to agree with you I don't see it happening. Meek is a street rapper, straight up, and street rappers don't sell like that. The last one that did was 50 Cent and that was cause he had Dre making singles for him. That's why Meek drops mixtapes and Wale drops albums, cause one makes street anthems that are gonna sell in the streets but not in the suburbs and the other makes radio records (singles) that help push album sales.
Again, I wish I could agree, but street rappers never make it big like that, I really hope it's different with Meek but I don't see it happening.

Tommy Hill Dead: Philly Rapper Killed in Apparent Robbery
http://www.theboombox.com/2011/12/05/tommy-hill-dead-dies/
YouTube
Philadelphia rapper Tommy Hill, aka Tommy Butta, died Sunday morning (Dec. 4) after being shot two days earlier in an apparent robbery. He was 36.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the veteran MC was approached by three masked men early Friday morning after leaving a bar in the city's Uptown section. Police said Hill was shot in the chest and lower body, and that the attack led to an exchange of bullets between the assailants and the bar's manager, who'd followed Hill outside to collect an unpaid tab.
"He was in a bar having a good time and afterwards they shot him and robbed him," an unnamed source told AllHipHop.com. "The dudes he was with shot back, security came out and it was hectic situation."
While the source cites robbery as the motive, others speculate the killing had something to do with Hill's criminal background -- he did time for selling crack -- and cooperation with authorities in a case involving local drug dealers.
"Because of the nature of the testimony he gave ... he was going to have a target on his back for a very long time," the rapper's lawyer, Bernie Resnick, told the Inquirer. "Of course, Tommy had trouble doing anything in the background."
Born John Wilson, the rapper released several albums as a member of the group RAM Squad, including 'Random Access Money,' which came out in 2001 on Universal. Following his prison stay, he changed his name to Tommy Butta, but his troubles didn't stop there. Earlier this year, AllHipHop.com reports, he was arrested in Atlanta for attacking a woman at a Wal-Mart.
