Okay, I know there has to be some fans of Metallica out there. Anyone catch them on Live Earth? Probably the best they've sounded in years. Most of their recent shows on the Sick of the Studio tour sound amazing. James' vocals have greatly improved since the Madly in Anger tour. I have some strong positive feelings about how the new album will sound.

Anyone else?

Not a fan of anything after their early 90s BLACK album, but they had some fast songs (Whiplash comes to mind) earlier on in their career. Cliff was an awsome bass player.

I really hope the presence of a new producer will work what I would consider a miracle in turning this once amazing band around. Bob Rock really was what killed Metallica and now that they've finally let him go, I'm hoping Rubin will be able to get some of that early energy out of their minds.

My fandom for Metallica is weening(sp?) I'll check out their new album, but my expectations are low. I recently was reading This Monster Lives, it's written by one of the filmmakers of Some Kind Of Monster and well, my thoughts from the other board sums up how I feel about the band now:

Currently This Monster Lives, which was written by the director of Metallica documentary Sone Kind of Monster. The book goes into detail about all of the behind the scenes happenings during filming.

TML onlys irritates me the more I read it. I think it may also be the final nail in the coffin of my Metallica fandom. The author is a tool who does nothing but swing from the band's nuts and the band members themselves all come off as childish, self-obsorbed wussies (with the exception of Jason). I can't believe they were actually one of my favorite bands at one time.

I love their first five albums (Kill 'Em All through Black) and think their post-Black work is decent with the exception of St. Anger, which IMO is their only bad album to date. I hope the next one will be good though.

I LOVE the old Metallica( Kill em All - ...And Justice For All). Some people might call me crazy, but i've never been THAT into the Black album.

Master of Puppets is my favorite album. It's one of my all-time favorite albums.

Some of my favorite songs:

Fight Fire With Fire
Escape
Master of Puppets
Blackened
Whiplash
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
...And Justice For All
Fade to Black

Metallica is the greatest band of all time in my view, not just in metal or rock, but in music.

Master is their best album, no doubt. I like everything they've done from Kill 'Em all to S&M. I hated St. Anger. Metallica is just one of those bands though. Whenever they make a new album, they always deserve a fair chance. They have earned that. I like the new songs that I have herd so far. They are certainly on the right track with the return of the guitar solos.

There's some great guitar work on Master Of Puppets. I had it on the CD player earlier this morning and I must agree with MMM about it being a favorite. The whole album had a great flow to it. The songs seemed perfectly placed.

I only like their album "And justice for all"... I didn't like most of the stuff that came after that.
I'm not really into rock/metal, but I still want to checkout the black album one of these days.

Just bought the VHS home video "CLIFF 'EM ALL" from a second hand store for $2.00. Great footage of Cliff doing what Cliff does best on the bass guitar. Cool to see a young Dave Mustaine during one of the interviews.

RIP Cliff.

I agree with you Toejam. I like all of it but St. Anger. You know though, starting with The Black Album they have become an absolutely different band though. I still believe that part of that reason is because of the loss of Cliff. Justice was as good as it was because Cliff wrote a lot of it. With Black and up they were very different. I think when he died a part of the band truely died with him. They will never be like they were in the 1980s...ever. All I hope for is the new album to be hard rock with some cool guitar solos and I'll be happy.

Agreed. I marvel at how fast they play live on the video. I was trying to keep up with James, but I gave up. He should have kept his hair long, because it suits him better than his short hair now. I think my new favorite bass player, next to Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and Pakash John from mid-70s Cooper and Lou Reed, is Cliff.

Between the two shows I saw, And Justice For All tour and the Black Album tour, Justice was more raw and in your face. The Black Album tour seemed more about how the band looked than delivering great music. Just my opinion.

Actually, Cliff only wrote a few riffs for To Live Is To Die. I'm listening to Justice right now, and I keep forgetting how damn good it is.

I actually like the Black Album. Maybe it's nostalgia (I bought it when it first came out and I was just going into 7th grade), but I have no beef with that album Plus, it has some of their best work with My Friend of Misery, Wherever I May Roam, and Sad But True.

I've found that as I've gotten older, I'm enjoying Load more and more. I can actually relate to the lyrics on a personal level, more than any of their other work except St.Anger believe it or not. As a recovering addict (alcohol) and having seen what it's done to people I love, I totally relate to a lot of the feelings on St. Anger. But I will say that St. Anger should have been an EP containing the title track, Frantic, All Within My Hands, Unnamed Feeling, and Dirty Window.

....Amazing transformation. It's like the story of the ugly duckling or something.

If anything, it shows what some fans have thought all along; that some of the St. Anger songs had potential to be great tracks with a bit of work. If they had done this plugged in, with electric guitars and such, it would have been perfect IMO.

In that tour book, I came across a band picture in the dressing room with Lars naked. It was blacked out (his crotch) but there may have been a towel there under the censor strip that I couldn't see.

I LOVE Ride the Lightning. Fight Fire With Fire is such a great intro song. I've always enjoyed the production on Ride quite a bit. I always hate when bads re-record their songs, and release them as albums. Take Testament's First Strike Till Deadly album. I personally think the production sounded better on the 80's albums.

I have got to disagree with Madman on that one. I think First Strike sounds way better then the 80s Testament albums. I like when bands update the production. Metallica's first four albums are their best music, but the production does sound very dated.

I believe you had mentioned in another thread that you prefered Megadeth to Metallica. Well that's about to change now that you have bought MOP and AJFA. As much as I love Megadeth I feel Metallica almost always manages to one up them.

CanadianFonzie
03-10-2008, 06:29 PM
nope, definitelly still prefer Megadeth, and I didn't quite go for ...And Justice For All, it's not a bad album but I'm guessing it was because there was no Cliff it just wasn't the same, it didn't come close to the first 3 albums and now I'm not sure whether to go on and get the self-titled album

Jigsaw

I've heard the bass on AJFA was deliberately turned down by the band because they enjoyed hazing Jason after he joined them. That's a huge asshole move on their part. Still, it's my favorite Metallica album.

CanadianFonzie
03-13-2008, 04:18 AM

MaDMaNMaRz
03-19-2008, 12:18 AM
Yeah, they intentionally doubled all of the bass with the guitars...it was sort of a hazing, I agree Jigsaw. That never bothered me, though. I think Justice sounds great....really harsh and intense.

Fonz, now that you heard their first 4, which is your favorite?

CanadianFonzie
03-19-2008, 12:38 AM

Indeed, Justice is so pissed off...I love it. I think that of the top 3 'Tallica albums IMO (Ride, Puppets, and Justice) that RTL is probably my least favorite because it has the song Escape on it, and I've just never liked that song. I can listen to the other ones from front to back but I always skip Escape.

MaDMaNMaRz
03-19-2008, 01:04 AM
I actually like Escape. It's not my favorite on there, but I can listen to it.

The verse riff in Trapped Under Ice is actually used in the Exodus song, Impaler. It sounds really good on their Tempo of the Damned album.

I'd rank the first 4 like this:

Master of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
...And Justice For All
Kill 'Em All

My rankings of the first four albums:

AJFA
MOP
RTL

The Black Album would be in third place after AJFA and MOP. TBA was even my favorite Metallica album for a long time until AJFA and MOP eventually grew on me more. I too like the song Escape from RTL, I always found it underrated.

MaDMaNMaRz
03-19-2008, 01:10 AM
I've hardly listened to the Black album. It's definitely the best of their post thrash albums, but I still can't listen to it really. I agree that Escape is an underrated song.

I still get goosebumps listening to Fade to Black. I absolutely love the intro, and the end melody during the solo. Pure brilliance.

Jigsaw
03-19-2008, 01:18 AM
Fade To Black is easily one of their best songs. It never fails to resonate with me.

TBA has a lot of my favorite songs on it. I love The Struggle Within, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf And Man, Through The Never, Holier Than Thou, Sad But True and The God That Failed.

CanadianFonzie
03-19-2008, 01:37 AM
I'll tell you exactly what I didn't like about ...And Justice For All, no Cliff Burton, the songs were way too suttle compared to the raw endless thrash of Kill 'Em All and the hard n' heavy Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All had maybe 2 true thrash songs and the rest just led into what would become the self-titled album showing concentrating on more making catchy music than heavy guitar riffs and squeeling screams like the first 3...and I can only assume it's because htey didn't have Cliff to stop this from happening

...basically I find ...And Justice For All to be the early signs of what Metallica is now, this is all my opinion of course, it's not really a bad album, just very very disappointing

MaDMaNMaRz
03-19-2008, 01:44 AM

well I have always like One for years, and IMO the only 2 real thrash songs off the album, Blackened and Dyers Eve are the other favourites, but they will never compare to songs like Fade to Black, For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Four Horsemen (my 3 favourite songs by them)

Lance Lives
03-19-2008, 03:51 AM

Yes! I knew I wasn't the only one who loved this song! Metallica is definitely one of my favorite bands. Their first 5 albums are absolutely solid. I honestly can't decide on a favorite between Ride the Lghtning and Master of Puppets. Those albums are both indescribably awesome, and I could listen to them without ever getting bored of them. Unfortunately, Bob Rock really fucked them up bad, just like the other bands he produced. I do, however, have full faith that this new album will be a return to form. I only say this because htye finally dropped Bob and went for Rick Rubin... and I'm very curious to see how it will turn out. Anyway, here are some of my favorites

Blackened (my favorite)
Frayed Ends of Sanity
Harvester of Sorrow
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Escape
The Four Horsemen
Whiplash
Leper Messiah
Hit The Lights
Turn the Page cover (although I generally hated the slow sound of Load/Reload, this was an excellent cover of a classic song)
Disposable Heroes
Master of Puppets
Battery
Fight Fire With Fire
Ride the Lighting
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Creeping Death
Fade to Black
One
Dyers Eve
...And Justice For All
Eye of the Beholder
The God that Failed
Enter Sandman
The Unnamed Feeling (one of the very few from St. Anger I like)
Holier than Thou
The Unforgiven
Nothing Else Matters
Motorbreath

I really hope the new album is worth a damn, but I just don't think they have any legit angst left in them, something that really makes music like this all the more real. They can try to re-capture the old days, but they were young and pissed off and now they're old and rich...it won't be the same.

I agree, LL. Watching a lot of videos of recent performances they've given, Metallica is a far cry from the way they were back in the '80s and early '90s, even in the late '90s they had a lot of energy. Nowadays, not so much, and they seem bored and disinterested with a lot of their recent performances.

Sean [The Wildcard]
04-29-2008, 08:02 AM
They have changed SO much since the Black Album.

A lot of their Die Hard fans really only listen to RTL - AJFA, and I don't blame them. That was Metallica in their heyday, doing what they did best. Once The Black Album came out, it was very noticeable that they were losing their metal edge, and going simply into simple Hard Rock.

When Load come out, it was a different Metallica all together. I would like to find a good reasoning for this, but since I'm an ass about what the real reasons are...I blame Bob Rock, and just about all of the creative juices, or lack there of, that were being tossed around in the group. The albums after that just became very sloppy, and Saint Anger was just a travesty to even have the METALLICA name associated with it. Granted, I have seen the 'Some Kind of Monster' Documentary, so I know reasons why it turned out to be pure shit.

Now, given the addition of Rick Rubin, the state of metal today, and what the boys can do better than anyone, I wonder if they can actually pull off a decent album this time around.

I think Rick is going to push them to do the things they do best, which is write chunky, epic, riff-heavy songs with deep, personal lyrical content. I also think Kirk's comments about an "Eastern" or "Middle Eastern" vibe will come through on some schizo type songs, but hopefully won't come across as System of a Down-esque.

It should be obvious to anyone paying attention that metal in the last 3 or 4 years has taken in a lot of hardcore, post-hardcore, screamo type sound a la Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine, Atreyu, In Flames, etc. These guys are selling assloads of albums, filling arenas, and winning (no pun intended) critical acclaim. Judging by Metallica's selection of opening acts and touring buddies, that the boys dig on some of this (Kirk has been wearing a Trivium shirt a lot these days). So, maybe they'll go in this direction, with complex drumming and riffs and solos.

The selection of other opening acts like Machine Head, Down, and The Sword suggest to me that we are looking at pretty heavy sound. With only ten songs, I'm expecting some long, AJFA type epics on here. And not just looped filler like on that piece of shit St. Anger, but REAL metal masterpieces, like Disposable Heroes and Shortest Straw.

I hope the bass is more prevalent, too. Just like we used to hear Cliff...

I know some die hard fans rag on the Black Album, but I love it and think it's often unfairly put down. Sure, it's a noticable departure from the first four albums, but it's still very much Metal (even if it's not quite as heavy or relentless). Some of their best songs and lyrics ever IMO are on it, and there's still an old-school feel to it, with songs like Holier Than Thou, Through The Never and The Struggle Within. It's my third favorite album after AJFA and MOP, respectively.

When Load came, that was when the change was obvious. Their style of music pretty much totally changed. Load had some good tracks on it, but there a lot of filler. Reload I actually like a lot and think is damn underrated. The first four and last four tracks on it are all great Hard Rock tunes. But St. Anger, yikes :X That's the only Metallica album I despise. Calling it an album is being generous, since it's little else but noise and shouting, and not much actual musical ability like the previous albums.

Well, the Velvet Revolver drummer has heard the album several times, and he says that it's one of their fastest albums since the 80's, so who knows... might be pretty cool. The only thing I hope for are speed, cool riffs, and the return of the "badass" James Hetfield (as opposed to the "pussy" James Hetfield, who came about around 1994). I always thought he had one of the coolest voices in metal, and it got wrecked on Load/ReLoad/St. Anger (although, St. Anger was a very slight return, sans that dumbass "angsty teenager" out-of-key screaming, to his original snarling vocals). And what would REALLY be great is if the first song started with an acoustic guitar intro, and went into an extremely fast song, then about track 4 had a song that starts as a ballad (with disturbing lyrics) and launched into a heavy, fast thrasher. I think they would be truly back then. Motley Crue's work has turned out well so far, Slayer recently came back to their previous sound, as well as Megadeth, so here's to hoping the same happens with Metallica!

And yeah Grave, FUCK Avenged Sevenfold.

I actually thought James Hetfield's voice sounded really good around the Load/Reload era. The albums may not have been the greatest, but his voice still sounded excellent IMO. I think it was during the St. Anger era his voice got wrecked and the band went down the tubes in terms of musical ability. Hopefully this album will see the return of the pre-Load Metallica.

Yeah, I guess I could agree with that. Ever listen to the Some Kind of Monster EP? He's using his St. Anger voice on tracks like The Four Horsemen, Ride the Lightning and Damage Inc. The Four Horsemen sounds decent, but the rest is pretty lame. Although, I do like the edit of Some Kind of Monster, the drum sound was slightly improved, and a lot of the beginning was chopped off (thankfully).

I'd just like to point out that neither this nor the first new song they played back in 2006 will be on the new album. The band has since confirmed it several times.

I don't know, personally I liked that one. Very similar to the original stuff, I could easily picture that on Kill em All minus the "woah yeah" stuff. I hear a lot of Metallica fans saying that the song sounded to punkish for Metallica, but it seems many forget the fact that Metallica's very early music was inspired by punk bands of the time, like the Misfits and so on. So personally I see it as a good thing they put together a song in that kind of style, even if we'll only see it in this live form. It's a lot closer to their roots then St. Anger was supposedly going to be.

I agree. I like everything Metallica ever did, but St. Anger. It sounded like an album full of demos. All the tracks sounded unfinnished. There were no solos and the lyrics were one sentence per song repeated over and over again. Now, if that were Disturbed, that would have been the best album Disturbed ever did, but I excpect more from Metallica. They are good muscicians and are capable of producing much better and more composed music. :p

St. Anger has almost no actual music on it, it's just noise, noise and more noise with occasional weak screaming from James. The only song I even remotely like on St. Anger is Sweet Amber, mainly because it at least has a catchy riff.

Disturbed is awesome, and they sound nothing like St. Anger. Ten Thousand Fists at times is borderline Melodic and Thrash Metal.

Metallica used to be one of my favorite bands, but Some Kind Of Monster really changed that. Seeing three millionaires sitting around pissing and moaning about how hard they have it just about killed it. Then I read the companion book, This Monster Lives and that was the final nail in the coffin.

They've been on a downward slope for years and it's finally beginning to show. I think it's a combination of them becoming too big, losing that fire and surrounding themselves with yes mean.

In fact, this article pretty much sums up my feelings on present-day Metallica:

Jason actually left because he thought bringing in a "Life Coach" to help the band sort out personal problems was B.S. He talks about it breifly on SKOM, calling it and I quote "Fucking lame."

As for Load/Reload. They're very good hard rock albums. Did you know that Reload was basically a bunch of left over songs from the Load session? That's why that album (Reload) has so many filler songs on it.

I like some songs off of Load, like King Nothing, The House That Jack Built, Bleeding Me, Ain't My Bitch, Until It Sleeps, Hero Of The Day and Ronnie, but find a lot of it to be either filler or just plain boring. I liked ReLoad a lot better because it felt like the band had a lot more energy going into it and the songs were tighter. The first four and last four songs on ReLoad kick ass and rank among Metallica's best, IMO. Heck, I think Prince Charming is up there as one of their best songs, I can listen to that forever.

Geddy Peart
05-16-2008, 03:47 PM
I actually don't think they were completely in the wrong with their stance against Napster. However, I do think Lars running his big yapper and the way they chose to go about fight Napster certainly didn't help.

The original problem with Napster began when they were writing I Disappear for Mission Impossible 2. They had 5 different, and unfinished versions of the song. They were undecided which version to finish when they found out someone had hacked into the system and had stolen all 5 versions. All versions had shown up on Napster and one was even being played on a radio station.

That was their original issue with Napster: unfinished songs being leaked before they were finished. However, Lars just ran his mouth and having millions of your fans kicked off Napster was a poor way to go about taking a stand.

On the other hand, the band has always promoted sharing live performances over the internet.

Jigsaw
05-16-2008, 10:58 PM
That was just it, Lars' unprofessional handling of the Napster situation. The band had every right to be pissed about I Disappear being leaked, but to go all-out and have Napster shut down and Lars to be acting like a baby over it was all uncalled for.

St. Anger Review. Not for the easily offended.

Here's where I stand on Metallica at the moment. I personally could care less about the Napster thing, but that could be because I really don't care about the personal decisions most of the members of my favorite bands make. I personally don't download music, at least not anymore. It takes away the thrill of finding the album, and it destroys the overall hunt. I honestly can't stand much of Load or ReLoad. It was a decrease in heaviness, and it simply did not work. Just like Slayer making a nu-metal album with Diablous in Musica. Difference is, it didn't take years upon years for Slayer to realize their error. St. Anger only made things worse, even though "Frantic", "Sweet Amber" and "The Unnamed Feeling' are some of my absolute favorite Metallica tunes. Honestly, I feel that until you have listened to St. Anger full volume on headphones without stopping it midway like I did, you have no idea how bad it really is. It may sound fucking atrocious blasting out of speakers, but you have no idea how bad that garbage can lid is until it's blasting right into your head. Although, somebody on YouTube posted slideshows of a "remastered" St Anger, with the drums softer and the addition of solos, not played by Metallica. These versions are indeed a great deal better, but the production is simply not the issue. It's the fucking music. The song "St. Anger" started off with an absolutely bone crushing riff, and it started out as if Metallica had their heaviest song in years, then it suddenly becomes some sort of soft-sang ballad shit. That right there was enough to make me realize that severe suckdom was about to set in. "Some Kind of Monster" was a fairly decent song, although the keyboard solo at the beginning is quite annoying. The edit on the Some Kind of Monster EP is infinitely better. But as soon as "Dirty Window" began, that was just it. With the exceptions of the aforementioned "Feeling" and "Amber", what followed was Metallica's worst songs of all fucking time (with the exception of "Fuel." Sorry, I can't stand that song.) "Invisible Kid" is just fuckin' awful. This term is probably going to describe the other songs on the album. "My World" was particularly annoying as well ("NOT only do I NOT know THE answer, IIII DOON'T EVEN KNOW WHAAT THEE QUESTION IS!!!!!!!!) That fucking screaming. James should have known better. "Shoot Me Again" ranks among their cheesiest fucking songs ever. "Sweet Amber" is the ONLY flawless track on the album, although a solo would have been nice. A lot of Black Stone Cherry's songs sound like Sweet Amber. "Unnamed Feeling" is a very powerful song, a really haunting ballad like "One" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", although it does have an extremely annoying vocal in the middle ("Get the FUCK out of here, II just wanna GET the FUCK out away from me. I cannot sleep with a HEAD so tight, I WANNA scream, I WANNA cry, I rage, I HUUUUURT, I hate, I wanna HATE IT ALL AWAAAAAYEEE!!!!). That vocal bridge is a cancer in the song, and if it were extracted and had a solo in it's place, the song would be perfect. "Purify"(spelled "Pure if I" in the lyrics, how fucking clever) and "All Within My Hands" (kill, kill kill kill KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL! KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLL!!!!) are THE worst Metallica songs ever. They never end, your brain just has enough of them and they SEEM to end, they fade away and everything. This illusion is simply the result of part of your soul dying from the trauma you just went to, rest assured. That said, St. Anger could have the greatest production ever, and it would still fucking blow ass. The songs are just un-fucking-believable for a band that wrote such classic albums, and clearly have the talent left in them. The lyrics are cheesy enough to resemble Poison attempting to thrash (but let's not jinx such a shotgun blast to the intelligence), the screams simply do not fit James' voice. James is known for being a pissed off guy with a roaring voice, not some lameass teenage angst singer. The garage sound is also quite unwelcome. This is a studio album, and it sounds (and even the greatest and cleanest production skills could not have fixed this) like an extremely cheap demo. It also does not for one minute sound the least bit honest. When Avril Lavigne's craptacular version of "Fuel" (a truly heinous version of a song I already fucking hate) is preferable to an album by Metallica, something has fucked up. I really fail to see what they are thinking. The songs sound like they were just kind of fucking around, and James sang the first rhyming words that came to his mind. I could rant on and on about the several things wrong with this demo that was passed off as an album, but my general point is that St. Anger simply fucking blows. And I have full faith that this LOAD of bullshit and the 2 LOADS (pun intended) that preceded it were the result of letting Bob Rock fuck around with Metallica, and now that he's gone (ad let's all thank the Gods that Motley Crue decided to shitcan him as well) let's hope that we see the return of the thrash masters that are Metallica. Til then, fuck St. Anger, St. Anger fucking sucks. And it has a stupid fucking cover too.

that aside, the Mission Metallica stuff does look fairly promising. The vocals seem to be back, and the guitar riffs sound cool. I'm a bit worried that there was no footage of Lars playing double bass, but I've got faith that it will be good. Either way, it's their last chance. Let's hope that they've corrected their atrocities of the past.

I remember when they were recording St. Anger and were posting clips online. I thought those sounded good too. Boy, how wrong I was.

Time will tell with this one. And honestly, I'm probably going to pick it up as soon as it comes out, but my expectations are still low.

Thankfully, I was not a huge fan of Metallica when St. Anger came out. I didn't even hear until 2 years after it was released (back in 2003 I only listened to AC/DC, and the only album I had was Blow Up Your Video. It has since become my favorite album by them), and I had been told how horrible it was. I tried to listen to it with a bit of an open mind, but it still fucking sucked. I'm not gonna say it's as bad as Peter Criss' last solo album, or that rap album Randy Savage made (don't worry, I don't listen to rap, and I didn't buy that. I just heard some of the songs through I-Mockery, it was hilarious), but it is easily the worst album by one of my top 10 favorite bands. But, my expectations are still kind of high for this next one. The words "Rick Rubin" and "Metallica" just sound too promising for failure.

Pretty much, and very wisely. I highly doubt they even like that album, and they know that we Metallica fans don't. Or who knows, maybe the ghost of Cliff Burton came to their rehearsal rooms one night, spooked the shit out of them, and said "This is bullshit guys! You're embarrassing the fuck out of me! Stop this shit, or terrible things will happen!" Ya just never know.

The only song on St. Anger I remotely like is Sweet Amber, everything else is fucking terrible. All Within My Hands is probably their worst song by a long shot, IMO.

God of Thunder
05-18-2008, 10:55 PM
While I'll definitely agree about "All Within My Hands", I do love "Frantic" and "Unnamed Feeling." And I guess the opening of "St. Anger". And I suppose "Some Kind of Monster isn't too bad either once the song actually starts. But yeah, the rest is almost overwhelming. If there's going to be a 75 minute Metallica album, it should not be anything like St. Anger.

Jigsaw

The title track on St. Anger would be decent with a shortened length, actual musical melody, less nu-metalish lyrics and the garbage can drums completely re-recorded from scratch with actual drums.

God of Thunder
05-18-2008, 10:59 PM
the song "St. Anger" would have been great had they kept with the opening, and not pussied it up by turning it into a ballad. The opening riff, regardless of the drums, is great. But then they just bring things to a complete halt and turn into a nu0metal ballad. Lame.

And it has a general "Fuck you!" message to it, and those songs usually do kick ass. The riff is pretty sweet, and the vocals are great too. With regard to the new album I have high hopes especially after hearing the Mission Metallica stuff so far.

With regard to St. Anger, I personally feel that it does not deserve all the bashing it gets.

Knowing how the band was at the time, St. Anger in it's finished form was all they could really do. And the band has even admitted it themselves. After all the therapy and rehab and so on, suddenly it was from one extreme to the other, from always arguing to and about each other and the music, to all this "getting in touch with your feelings" stuff and trying to support every idea weather they thought it was bad or good. And when you mix that with the fact that these guys were struggling already to do something even remotely close to their roots, it's not going to come up good. When you're in an extreme like that it's probably hard to focus on coming up with good solid material, like many fans were expecting.

I'll go as far as to say that every fan who had such high expectations around the album deserved to be disappointed. They set themselves up for it. Metallica could not, at the time, make the stellar album everyone wanted and I think that's clear after watching SKOM. So I think the bashing of St. Anger is not really warrented, especially not how some people choose to go about it. Hell, all the bashing has set off a chain reaction among a lot of fans, which has played a huge part in why the album seems to do so poorly. A good percentage of the fanbase, of ANY fanbase, is comprised of sheep. People who will follow whatever the general opinion is or whatever seems most popular. Because a lot of fans bashed St. Anger so openly when it came out, a lot of fans followed blindly without even having a real opinion on which to base their argument. Bashing St. Anger has become "trendy" in the music community and again I say it's not warranted.

I say, watch SKOM, pay attention to it, then go listen to St. Anger all the way through. You might have a change of opinion on it. At least I did. If you know the reasons why it turned out how it did, I don't feel you should have a reason to bash.

Even with the personal problems the band had during the making of St. Anger, they should've just given it time to make another album when they were ready instead of making it in the state they were in. It's like a marathon runner who's broken both of his legs but he still insists on running, but he obviously can't.

It's like a marathon runner who's broken both of his legs but he still insists on running, but he obviously can't.

Well yeah, but the question is, do you openly bas the guy for wanting to run, even in that state? Do you bring him down because he just wants to get it over with?

That's the point I'm trying to make with regard to St. Anger. The band were in a horrible state but they started it and had to finish it and get it out, so they did. Is it really necessary for the fanbase to bash them when the circumstances behind why the record ended up that way are out in the open? That's all I'm saying.

Jigsaw
05-23-2008, 04:40 AM
Even with those circumstances into consideration, it doesn't change the album or make it better. I'm sorry about the problems the band was going through at the time, but it doesn't change the fact that St. Anger was a terrible album and a big stepdown from a normally great band.

Rich
05-23-2008, 04:47 AM
I agree with Jigsaw. St. Anger was a piece of crap despite the state of the band at the time. I felt bad as hell for them that they were going through what they were going through, but that does not change St. Anger being horrible. That is what it was to me...just horrible. If it were Staind making that album, it would have been their best...but Metallica is capable of writing much better material then St. Anger. I think their new album will be better then that just based on new song 1 and new song 2 and those are so old, they might not even be on the new album anymore. Those are from 2006 themselves and the new album comes out this November.

I find it funny how Lars cracks on it now, despite the fact that they still play St. Anger material live.

Until it Sleeps is probably my favorite song off of Load. That song kicked ass, it's one of the last songs where James sounded like James, to me. I always wished they had recorded that song for a Nightmare on Elm St. movie or something. It might sound stupid, but I think Until it Sleeps sounds more like a Freddy song than Enter Sandman, the lyrics sound like they describe him, for some reason. Load had too much filler on it, IMO, which is why I don't enjoy it that much. The middle of ReLoad with the songs I mentioned is filler, but the first four and last four songs are great and make up for the middle (interestingly, those eight songs also comprise the same number of songs as both RTL and MOP). St. Anger as I've said many times before is the only album of their's I outright hate. I think if you excise the middle five songs of ReLoad, you have a Hell of a Hard Rock/Alt Metal Metallica album that might not be Thrash Metal but is still kick-ass Metallica music.

If you go to Metallica's official website they have this new thing called Mission Metallica where you can hear some parts of new songs. All I can say is that the travesty that was St. Anger is in the past and Rick Ruben has seemed to beat the metal back into them! This is the most powerful music I have herd from Metallica in many years. With Ruben and the band, the new album should be a good one. I for one can't wait!

I also realize the significance of using the West Side Story song "America" as a guitar riff in the first 20 seconds of "Don't Tread On Me"...I figured it out all by myself, I feel so proud, lol

I thought Kirk was great on the self titled album. I also like dhim on the 2 Load albums. He and James were clearly the best things about them.

the only thing that stops the self titled album from being my third favoruite Metallica album (comparing it to Master of Puppets) is the lack of Cliff and the over-used wah, had Cliff been alive past Master of Puppets, I would not only prefer Metallica over Megadeth, but I would prefer them over alot more other bands as well

I think Jason was pretty good, I don't think he was able to showcase his talent on Justice because of the production, and the band turning down his bass. I will admit that is an annoyance. But I thought he played well on Metallica, and it's too bad he had to enter the band when he did. But yeah, Cliff is better. Much better.

there was no bass on Justice, lol, and Jason is just your basic bass player, while Cliff was a one in 3 million bass player

I've read that the bass on AJFA was deliberately turned down by the band as a means of hazing Jason, which sucks. Still, it's a great album and my favorite by the band. I think it was on TBA that Jason's bass talents started to shine, though. He's no Cliff Burton, but he's definitely got talent.

there was no bass on Justice, lol,

yes there was. in fact, if you listen very closely you can hear it, the band just turned it down to be assholes.

From what I've read, the band really tormented Jason. They made him pay all the tabs for their beers, they deliberately turned down the bass on AJFA, rumors were spread about him, etc. they weren't very kind to him to say the least.

yah I know about that, I do feel sorry about that cause etallica, from what I've read, can really be assholes, and Jason took it, which is cool...but I will always wish Cliff never died

I wish Cliff never died, either. It's so sad reading and hearing about the details about the bus crash that killed :(

I wasn't even a fan of them back then and I was still sad, I just wish I took that more to the heart, because I kind of just waved it off, where as now I regret that moment

They also used to shit on him at autograph sessions. He'd always sign his name and put "Bassface", and one of them would cross out the B when it go to them. Yeah, definitely assholes to Jason.

That really is a big asshole move on their part, how did Jason put up with that for so long? I would've told them to fuck off and move onto another band if they were like that with me.

Agreed Grave. About the vehicular destruction... Twisted Metallica? I'd be all for that shit! I personally think Guitar Hero has grown a bit too popular... I think it's cool if you play it and like it(I like the GH games and I play bass), but those who play it and act like they're musicians for it really need to fuck off. I think a lot of people don't realize it's just a game... but it still sound skind of cool

I've never played any of the Guitar Hero games, I'm not nearly as avid a gamer as I once was.

I'd rather play Guitar Hero Metallica over Aerosmith, even though I'm still getting the Aerosmith

So I finally picked up AJFA today... I've been kinda lazy about getting it. Glad I did, I'm really liking it so far. I already love Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, so I'd figured AJFA would be good. I'll probably get The Black Album soon, too. My brother had it and he said he loved it.

And I nearly wet myself when I heard Guitar Hero: Metallica was being made.:p

AJFA is my favorite Metallica album and The Black Album is also great. You can't go wrong with Metallica's first five albums.

How about some good sounding news on the new album? Got this from Blabbermouth.

UK's Rock Sound and Metal Hammer magazines have posted separate reports on the listening session for the new METALLICA album, which took place earlier today (Wednesday, June 4) in London.

Rock Sound writes: "On first impressions and just one listen, Rock Sound can confirm that the songs we've heard sound very much like classic METALLICA in vibe, harking back to the days of 'Master Of Puppets', '…And Justice For All' (but with bass) and the [self-titled 'black'] album — without sounding dated or tired.

"Of the six tracks Rock Sound heard this afternoon, only one had a working title — 'Flamingo'. With a slow intro, the song was reminiscent of 'Battery' in vibe, with two guitar solos and an undercurrent of melody and groove.

"The first single is an epic power rocker in the vein of 'The Unforgiven', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Sanitarium', with a mid-tempo, head-banging section and some THIN LIZZY-esque twin guitar riffage.

"Another song features the lyrics, 'Into abyss, you don't exist, you can't resist the Judas kiss'; another features an almost RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE-esque drum 'n' bass undercurrent and lyrics about 'suicide' and 'cyanide'; while the final song we heard, dubbed 'The Song', clocks in at under five minutes and is a galloping thrash attack with quirks, and a sniff of TESTAMENT about it!

"We suspect other song titles could include 'Die Hard', 'Show Your Scars', and 'My Apocalypse' — but we cannot be held responsible if none of these titles or lyrics are accurate!

"Thankfully — there are plenty of Kirk Hammett traditional guitar solos and a decent drum sound. Hetfield's voice sounds in fine form too. All of the songs have many different parts to them, giving the impression that the quartet is revisiting the epic vibe of the band's 'classic' period."

Metal Hammer reports: "What do the songs sound like? Track one, which is only known by the cryptic working title 'Flamingo', opens up on thunderous rolling drums as lead guitar meets them head on, a flaring up in stop-start motion before it pulls itself together in rushes forward in classic thrash style, all crunching 'Fight Fire With Fire' riffs and drilling beats. It takes at least two minutes for James Hetfield's vocals to come in, and while they sound furious, this isn't the grittiest he's ever sounded, more open in tone, but while there's still a memorable vocal line for the 'chorus,' and there is so much going on in the song, and so many ideas thrown in and discarded for the next one that it's hard on first listen to pick out one riff that you're going to remember it by. But with galloping riffs and the return of guitar breaks rising up from out of the grooves you can hear the true METALLICA spirit, even though its as if reflected in mirrored mosaic.

"Track two is at heart an anthemic ballad that recalls 'Fight Fire With Fire' and 'Nothing Else Matters', with a chiming guitar intro, airy vocals and some slightly convoluted, progressive-style bridges that mutate into urgent riffing, more galloping riffs and guitar solos. Again, the song has a number of different sections, but it still sounds massive.

"Track three kicks off on a stop-start riff flecked with Eastern touches, as other bustling guitar lines play off each other and Hetfield's vocals retain the power of old, like some monolithic prophet overlooking events as mid-paced, chugging riffs come in, sounding like an army on the march, methodically shooting anyone in their path.

"Track four is reminiscent of 'Master Of Puppets' with more than a touch of heads-down SLAYER pacing thrown in. After an artillery-lobbing drum-led intro, it quickly sets off on marching, thrash mode, Hetfield's spat vocals taking melodic digressions, as he roars 'Bow down, surrender unto me.' The song's groove carries you along as it opens up into guitar atomospherics that bring LED ZEP to mind. It isn't quite the kind of irresistible monster they've created before, but METALLICA still prove they can still sound lean and epic at the same time, and when the track drops out into the grove mid-way though, you can imagine the chants coming from the crowds live.

"Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem.

"Track six is the 'song', considerably shorter than the others, but full of clinically sharp riffing, more SLAYER-esque parts and galloping grooves, all hustle and bustle with a tinge of Eastern melody thrown in once more.

"Initial impressions is that this is an album that's going to get our blood chugging, but whether it's all we hoped for is going to take more plays to answer. Ultimately we're hugely relieved and pretty damn thrilled, and we can't fucking wait to hear the rest."
