My ultimate favorite is Friday the 13th series, but I gotta give love to the other big 2: The Halloween series and the ANOES series, in that order.

A Nightmare On Elm Street.
I love all of the installments. To me, it was a series that never went bad. It's the most solid horror series. I didn't like the Halloweens after 5, Friday the 13ths after 7, Child's Plays after 3, Hellraisers after 2, etc.

I have to say F13, since I never liked anything after Halloween 4, ANOES 3, Hellraiser 3, Child's Play 2, TCM 3, and so on.

It has a nostalgic quality for me, it has a great, memorable villian, and it's just tons of fun to see a foul-mouthed, 2-foot tall prick run around and kill everybody in creative ways.
Chucky is my favorite horror icon, more so than Leatherface or Jason or Freddy or Michael or Pinhead or the Tall Man or...um...whoever I'm forgetting.
So, why do you like Hellraiser so much?
Being a Friday the 13th message board and all I think it was obvious what series was going to win.
I think it would be more interesting to do a poll on what is your favorite series other then Friday the 13th. Now, that to me would have been more interesting.

I think the Nightmare on Elm Street series would win, I mean its in 2nd place and it did have a cross over with the Friday the 13th franchise.
Taking out the big 3 (Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street) now THAT would be interesting.

So, why do you like Hellraiser so much?
The epic horror-fantasy element. Not just limited to one iconic psycho, but built up as a vats mythology o ancient horrors, demonic Gods, alkternative dimensions... all very Lovecraft really. Leviathan as the God of Suffering and Flesh, Pinhead as the Black Pope Lord of the Cenobites, the themes of suffering, pain, human desire and how humanity are often the true villains.
- Scarecrow
To me, Friday/Nightmare/Halloween are counterparts so they all occupy the same position in the countdown, followed by Hellraiser, TCM and Child's Play.

I can NEVER decide between Halloween & F13. Picking is impossible. I will take yet another opportunity here to say NOES blows something awful!
I guess I missed Sleepaway Camp on the list originally. I would have picked that.

Though it's by no means the best series, the Puppet Master series will likely always be closest to my heart. Followed very closely by Friday the 13th.
But as a writer and aspiring film maker, the Hellraiser series has served as my biggest inspiration. I agree with pretty much everything Scarecrow has said on it. It really captures the depth of human depravity. In the first two films, Pinhead wasn't the film's true villain, and I loved that. My only real issue with Hell on Earth is that it made Pinhead the main villain and the focus of the movie which I think is kind of missing the point. Still, a unique take for the time.
Anyway, I voted Other: Puppet Master.

That would be. Other then the big three I might have to go with George A. Romero's Dead series. I also am a huge fan of the Child's Play, Chainsaw, and Evil Dead series.

Friday the 13th is my favorite slasher series, but my favorite horror franchise over-all would have to be Phantasm. The surrealism draws me into the film in a way that slashers, entertaining though they are, don't.

I gonna have to go with George A. Romero's Dead Series. Its my favorite Horror Franchise ever and its the series that got me into the horror genre in the first place. The series never really went downhill imo. Well, atleast not to the extend of other horror franchises like, the embarrasing: Freddy's Dead, Jason X, and Halloween: Ressurction which are just terrible. Diary might be bad but, not that bad to be putwith those garbage films.
The 'Nightmare' Series is a close second though. I love the first 4 and New Nightmare. Nightmare 5 is a disappointment. I don't love it but, I don't hate it either. Freddy's Dead and FvJ though remain the crap they are.

Halloween is definitely my favorite franchise because the films were of a higher quality. Friday the 13th comes in a close second though.

That's how I feel as well. The Halloween franchise seems more story driven than the F13 franchise. It's odd, though, because for a brief time when I first got into horror I'd rave on & on about Friday the 13th all day (in a good way) and then I started to watch more Halloween films, and my head started to turn, then there was the brief period of time I couldn't choose between the two and when I could, I decided I was a bit more of a Halloween guy.
To be brutally honest, though, while the original Friday the 13th is an iconic film, it just didn't break ground like the original Halloween did.

Looking back at the thread, I see that I picked NOES when it was started, and I'll still roll with that (and always will because I don't see any franchise dethroning that one). But I've gotta give an honorable mention to Phantasm, especially after checking out the sequels again in the past year or so. Forgot about how strong the series was, and I wish we'd get another one.

ANOES, F13, & Halloween are all worthy franchies, but in terms of quality & characters, I think Halloween is at the top of the chain. As far as my favorites go, I'd list Halloween as being first, then F13, & then ANOES.

Without a question for me, it's Evil Dead. Every movie in the series is basically as strong as any given first (or subsequent, in the rarer cases where a sequel is better) film in all these other franchises. Frankly, I don't think any of these series hold a candle to the real holy horror trilogy. Pound for pound, any of these franchises beating Evil Dead would be like Rocky beating Drago in the only official cut of Rocky IV. Ie: the unofficial one where Drago wins.
The Dream Master
11-13-2009, 04:45 AM
I think if you took the three best Elm Street movies against the Evil Dead trilogy, they hold their own pretty well. For me, that'd be 1, 3, and 4. Though I've gotta say that the worst ED movie (and I have no clue what that would be because they're so damn close :X) doesn't get as poor as the lesser NOES movies. So I guess as a whole unit, I can roll with ED being damn strong...just not my favorite, 'cause Freddy rules.
Brett H.
11-13-2009, 04:56 AM
Ehhhh, I don't think I'd put NOES 4 up there with any ED flick. :X As for NOES 3, I really need to watch that one again to grasp how much I actually like it, but I seem to remember thinking the type of people who liked it so much above and beyond the original, even, were, well...
http://images.chron.com/blogs/blog9/ogre01.jpg
I guess if you wanted, you could stretch it into putting NOES 4 into AOD category, but I think that's doing AOD a serious disservice for how good it is at what it is. Not too many flicks funnier or with a doeper badass than Ash.
The Dream Master
11-13-2009, 05:01 AM
Hard to compare NOES 4 and AOD, but in terms of tone, I guess those two match up the best between the two franchises. You have ass-kicking main characters (Freddy and Ash), and they're both stylish as hell. I think I would give AOD the nod when it comes to humor, but it should since that's what it set out to do (more so than Nightmare 4 anyway). It's a stretch, but for pure entertainment value, both are close for me.
