I wanted to start a thread to see if anyone has heard any news about the DVD release. So far it's not looking good, MGM has already started to announce titles for release in October and so far they have yet to say anything about The Burning. From what I hear, no one is willing to talk about it either. The soundtrack is still coming out in August but I don't think that is a sign either way.

I haven't heard anything.
Generally, I love this movie; very campy, classic 80s formula. Some pretty brutal scenes on the lake.
I think it was either nothing more then an internet rumor or original planned and then cancelled for some reason. If it were coming out in September you would be able to pre-order it from sites like Amazon and DVDEmpire by now. The title is nowhere to be found on either. That leads me to believe that it isn't going to happen.
This sucks. I have never seen The Burning, but have been reading about it for years on these boards. This was finally my chance to see it, and it does not seem like it is going to happen now.

I think MGM planned on releasing it, something stopped them from moving forward with their plans. I'm sure it has something to do with who produced the film or rights issues....the usual crap. It's very dissapointing and while I'm not ready to write it off as not coming out I don't think it's looking good at all. I'd say it has a 10% chance of coming out in September. The only other thing I can think of is that MGM knowing The Burning would be a decent seller decided to hold it back and not release it on a day already loaded with long awaited titles and a special edition of ROTLD. So maybe, it will come out in October on a less crowded day. MGM is already announcing their October titles so if that's the case we should know something soon.

Michael Fleisher is the one who produced the extras on the disc. He said on DeadPit.com that is IS coming out 100% definite and he said 100% it's September.
He mentioned it will have commentary by the director, a Savini BTS and a rare redband trailer that was never released.

I hope The Burning comes out, it's probably the last GREAT slasher to hit DVD. I don't mean "great" slashers like Graduation Day and Prom Night, either. ;)
Nice avatar, Scabby, I remember the day I bought Blood Rage on VHS. Ahhh, the memories. That sucker must have made the rental stores decent bucks. Amazing cover art.

That's a bummer that The Burning might not be coming out as planned. At least my Monsters HD version will tide me over until it finally does.
I'm definitely going to pick up the soundtrack. I've always loved Rick Wakeman's score.

Sadly, he's just the producer of the extras and studios lie. It's a good thing to hear but until MGM officially announces the disc and retailers put it up I will remain cautious. The thing is we should have heard something by now, most studios give a lot of time between the announcement and release date so retailers can get their orders in. Not a single DVD site other then a few horror sites have even said anything about the title. There are also no retailers taking order for it which for a title coming out in September is strange.

Yeah Felsher is just the producer of the extras, but he seemed very adamant about the release date. I'm sure if it was being held back he wouldn't be the first to know.

A single retailer is taking order for the DVD:
http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/product.asp?sku=D55419
The lack of any details makes me think it's just a reaction or the rumors. I have no idea how trustworthy the site is or of its reputation. The only other thing I can think of that may be a good sign is that a press release for The Graduate was put out today and it streets the same day (9/11).
I wonder if Jason Alexander will be in any extras??probably not:duh:

Anyone else find it funny how doing a DVD search for The Burning on Amazon brings up some of the other 9/11 MGM/FOX DVDs? Kinda odd how From Beyond and ROTLD show up on a search that has nothing to do with them..........
Joshg
07-20-2007, 12:30 AM
Very.
Oh, it's the Ghost of Christmas DVD Reassurance, telling us not to worry, and a DVD is on its way. Aww, how sweet. They better use the original artwork! Grrr at Dressed to Kill, and others...
sCabbOy
07-20-2007, 12:33 AM
I doubt the same art work will be used. See the atrosity that dons the front of the DVD for From Beyond? Or ROTLD?
I bet the front of The Burning will have a girl screaming, a silhouette of Cropsy with the shears, Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter.
they screw around way to much with original artwork. they should just leave the originals the hell alone..but i guess the same can be said about remakes.:meh:

They should make dual covers or at least an insert of the original artwork (Monster Squad will have that) so you can have it.

Felsher said in an interview on DeadPit radio that the disc would include commentaries by director Tony Maylam and Tom Savini (not sure if it's two separate ones or both on the same track) as well as behind the scenes home video footage provided by Savini and a photo gallery. I think he mentioned a few cast interviews, too, but I don't recall. I know he said the Weinsteins weren't asked to participate due to time constraints.
Wheatjedi
07-20-2007, 06:06 AM
Did he say whether the cast interviews were recent or from the home video footage Savini shot?
I'd imagine that there must be some new material as fas as interviews are concerned. that would be quite a cheap move just recycling a featurette , but it has been done before.:shifty:

http://www.dvddrive-in.com/images/i-m/mgm0732.jpg
Not great, but a heck of a lot nicer than From Beyond's cover art. Honestly, From Beyond's cover art looks like a leftover from MGM's Sony days (since From Beyond was originally scheduled to come out the fall of the Sony takeover, and it looks identical to the shitty Sony photoshop jobs which befell Happy Birthday to Me, Real Genius, and other flicks.)

I would complain about the cover if I had any energy to fight for this title. Six years of waiting, a few times wondering if it'll come out at all. Even recently wondering if it was going to come out. They could have wrote "Teh berning" on it as cover, text only. In Comic MS Sans font, and I'd have happily bought it. After all these years, I just wanna see the fuckin' movie already.

Wes, do you know if he got those images from sell sheets (either ads from trade magazines or directly from studio binders)? You can see white around the borders on some of the images which makes me think that's where they came from. If that's the case then I think that's as much confirmation as we need! Anyway, I like the concept but something looks really off about Cropsy in the pic they used....is that even him?? I like the Scarecrows cover art, despite never seeing the movie! Why does everyone insist on butchering classic covers? Probably to cater towards the more "mainstream" crowd, I suppose. I think that's a dumb reason to change the cover art. No, not saying that to get anyone's "goat". Simply saying that, if today's tripe that is so quickly churned out by one studio after another can get a two-disc DVD release, filled to the brim with bullshit featurettes about an equally-as-bullshit film, why does The Burning get the shaft with, what... a commentary, a theatrical trailer and a still gallery?

Suncoast uses discs for their database so it can take a while for them to get the updates (I worked there for three years). Unless it's on their reservation sheet which is usually just bigger titles there isn't much else to do. Anyway, it is indeed coming out on 9/11 so less than a month to wait!

I have to agree. They probably could have done better. :(
But I won't step on their tails. It's coming, that's for certain, so I'm just awaiting its release. Go Cropsy Go!
I love the scene in the hospital when Cropsy is first burned and he grabs that doctor's arm. The burns look super painful.

It's the original audio format though. Mono doesn't make for the best 5.1 mixes as previous releases have shown. For a movie like The Burning mono will be just fine as long as they do a good job on cleaning it up. I've heard a mono mix of the MonsterHD version (not sure if it was mono on the original broadcast) and I pray they won't be using that mix. It's horrible, tinny and distant and the levels are all off.

Given that the film's original soundtrack is mono, there's no reason for a multi-channel soundtrack.

I suppose it comes to what source material was available. MonstersHD seems to do their own thing independent of what studios end up releasing so I wouldn't be surprised if they are sourced from different materials.

My copy of this shipped from Deep Discount today. :)
Also, if this has more footage from the MonstersHD version, that would indicate that it's probably a brand new, re-mastered transfer and everything. MonstersHD (and any other channel for that matter) can only play what the studios give them, so, in this case, it looks like MGM has ponied up some cash to make this a good release, quality-wise.

The best way to describe this film: it's a cross between Deliverance, Friday the 13th and Madman. I really liked the atmosphere of this movie, it has a real backwoods slasher feel to it and the kills are awesome.

Transfer is great as I said, colors are some of the best I've seen on a low budget 80's slasher flick. I'm glad MGM gave this some love, the transfer is worth a purchase alone. I'm pretty sure the movie had a pretty big budget in context to it's sub-genre, I think over a million which was a lot seeing movies like The Forest, Don't Go In The Woods, Humongous and such were made for 100-400,000.

Suncoast should have it, however it seems not many stores got it in so I would call first. You should be able to check stock online at Best Buy's website if you want to save yourself a trip.
ADDED:
Just a heads up to the Canadians looking for this and other MGM release: Future Shop has a 2 for $20 (or $12.99ea.) for all of the releases (except From Beyond & ROTLD) and should have multiple copies in stock. They are on an end cap and other than From Beyond none are on the new release shelf, the only one I couldn't find was Witchfinder General. You can check store stock at futureshop.ca or if you prefer Best Buy you can do the same.
P.S- Jeepers Creep 1&2, Child's Play, Wrong Turn (?), Amityville Horror (original) and a few others have new slipcases like some of the recent Fox re-releases. Same editions but some of them (Jeepers and Child's Play) looked quite nice.

It's a little hard to get ahold of a Cropsy mask. I only know of two different ones that that have been available. Both versions looked good. One was by Jeremy Bohr and the other is rare and was sold a long while back. You'd probably be able to find someone willing to sell the Bohr one since he made several (and even had two different paint styles). No, it's... not very good.
The first fifteen minutes is basically a demo reel for the SFX team. Maybe like 5-6 deaths in a row dont by killers not in the movie and characters not in the plot. The killings are well done, but sorta makes no sense.
After that the girls of the movie are introduced and then go to the desert... gets boring and the rest of the movie is some guys trying to help them and the girls being raped (Last House style girl is forced at gunpoint to perform oral on another girl) and killed and of course the heroine kills the perverts. It's more og a schlocky exploitation than a slasher. It's also old. The box says 85, but the cars are 1970s and the transfer looks really old and worn.

It appears to be the exact same. Canadian and US DVDs are usually the same, just with different rating logos. Some exceptions are Terror Train, which is 1000x better on the Canadian TVAFilms release than the horrendous American one. And it isn't even that amazing to begin with. :D
I haven't seen the American back though. Mine has "THE ULTIMATE HORROR-THRILLER" -Los Angeles Herald-Examiner on back.
It also has three pics :(...I know, small amount, (not including background image). There's a head shot of the hooker, the campfire, and shower girl when she's clipper fighting with Cropsy (one-sided if I do say so myself).

Cool. I hear people on here living by the most interesting slasher shooting sites, and it intrigues me. Lucky them.
If I have time, I try and find out where that is sCab. Although, since you're 10,000 times closer to it than I am, I doubt that I'll be much help.
But that brings me to something I found out the other day.
I was born beside SYDNEY MINES, 1991. 10 years after My Bloody Valentine. Imagine my surprise when I found that out. I should go back there some day, and see if I can find some of the scenes around Sydney. Afterall, it's not too far away. Cape Breton is about 3-4 hours from me.

Well, I heard the movie was shot at some camp near Allegany State Park then I hear it was near Castile, NY (opposing directions). The ruins we found was near Castile, near Lethworth State Park. I tried calling Tom Savini but he never picks up the phone (his phone number is listed, but usually only his machine answers).
The shooting location for NOTLD isn't too far either, neither is the shooting location for those turds Ghost Lake and Dark Harvest 2.
Some of Poultrygeist was shot here, and a new movie called Banshee was shot here.

Oh man. The Dark Harvest movies are AWFUL! :X
Off the top of my head, the only horror film I can think of that was shot in Chicago (i'm in Joliet, but it's not terribly far) is The Wizard of Gore.

They really are.... so low budget. Like in part 1 where the guy was ripped in half. They used the guys clothes stuffed with straw.

 That's terrible. You can tell the SFX are so fake in those and the Scarecrow movies.....Scarecrow, Scarecrow Slayer, and Scarecrow Gone Wild.
In Scarecrow Gone Wild, there's a scene where the guy has his guts laying on his stomach, but you can clearly tell it's rubber, haha.

Not to derail this convo, but in Scarecrow gone wild where the 2 guys are pissing, you see them "unzip and pull out" but the camera doesn't pan up and you can see theres nothing in their hands at all! It shows the hands almsot completely. That always made me laugh.

Anyways, thought The Burning fans would love to know. I am in contact with the lady who did the extras casting in the movie (she is the CEO of Girl Scounts in the area and the president of a local Real Estate agency) and we are discussing the parts where the movie was filmed at.
Some of it was shot along Tonawanda Creek, in North Tonawanda, NY. Some in Silver Lake in Perry, NY. She's not sure where the camp was shot, because it's been a long time but she said she will find out for me. She thinks it may be either Camp Asbury on Silver Lake in Perry, or a YWCA camp in North Tonawanda.
As for the ruins where the last sequence was shot, we know it's abandon copper mines in Tonawanda (not North Tonawanda) and not quite sure where yet.
Silver Lake has changed over the years, but we thinkw e found the place where the water shenanigans part took place. Where Glazer got shot in the ass.
Now?

Then?

It looks like a river in the movie, but Silver Lake is long and narrow, and the part in the movie looked quite wide at the point where the cabin was.

Yea I have a Suncoast at the local mall here...about 25 minutes away. i go there all the time, but they are so expensive (unless you can catch a sale). They normally charge retail price and they won't comp price (compare shop) with anyone else because all they carry mainly is movies.

Awesome news Scabboy. I would love to know anything else she can tell you also as I am a nut when it comes to this film.
Certainly go get this SilverShamrock as this is one of the best slasher films ever IMO. I think I have 8 to 10 copies right now of it and looking to get even more. I just got my Promo record from Japan of it with the Theme from the Burning on it and have a Radio ad also on the way.

You won't be disappointed sir. Its a must have for any horror fan. Its hard to get hold of over here in the UK as its currently deleted. I managed to out bid everyone on e-bay awhile back and now my copy sits proudly in my DVD collection.
Incidentally, watch out for the scene where Glazer gets shot on the arse with a pellet gun..its a hoot!
Happy viewing.

This one is a bit hard for me to watch. I mean it's a decent film, but I keep thinking of Seinfeld when I watch it...George with hair. whenever he's around water, I keep thinking of the episode where he went in the pool and his dick shrunk and his girlfriend saw his tiny member lol

Cropsy I will keep you and everyone posted. At this point there's a huge conflict as to where everything was shot. Basically it was shot over 6-7 places over a 100 mile radius. Principal photography was shot over 2 camps nearby eachother (Olean and Franklinville, NY) and then the concrete ruins part was shot 100 miles away from those places in Model City, NY and Savini's gore inserts were shot in another place Tonawanda, NY.
I doubt I will ever find every spot, but at least the camp and the ruins.

I know it sounds strange but I would actually love to go to the sites and take even just a bit of dirt from each place and hold it in a jar.
God I need to get help for this obsession with this movie. lol

Well, if we find it I will get dirt. I am also gonna snag a cinder block from the ruins as well. But, my and my friend are planning on boating down the entire Tonawanda Creek to try and find the spots where the guys were sitting on the rocks waiting for the raft to come back. That was shot someone along there and Savini's gore inserts were done near there.
I dunno, it's just a mess because the movie's principal scenes weren't shot in one place, but many. Basically every shot- the shower, the mess hall, the baseball game, swimming, and the bunks were all shot in different places.
cropsy
11-04-2007, 11:51 PM
I'd love to get one of the cinder blocks also but I can only imagine the shipping and handling on that one. I may have to tell my g/f that would be the best place to go for a vacation just so I can be there.

I got my DVD in the mail today and have watched the trailer on it. I am going to watch the movie later tonight. Just the trailer alone is awesome. Oddly enough, but cool none-the-less, was behind the factory dvd cover art that came with it, was a very good printed out copy of the same cover art. I guess the seller on eBay likes making dvd covers.
I would love to if I would take the time to sit and piddle with photoshop. I have alot of them downloaded, but have never tried to print them out. Go figure.

Wow. That is a really good movie. It has "slight" similarities to 'Friday the 13th'...which is cool....but it is a very original story and great atmosphere throughout.
The scene where a bunch of the kids are paddling back to camp on the raft they built and they come upon one of their canoes floating alone.....I never even thought about it being Cropsy in the canoe and when he jumped up and started slashing, it scared the shit outta me. I assumed he had put the first girl that he killed into the canoe.
Great horror film. I loved it. :D

Speaking of the similarities with F13, Savini and the Weinsteins say that this was written before Friday The 13th and Savini said he got the script for The Burning while he was working on Friday The 13th- before it was released.
Anyways, if you have Google Earth type in Bonds Lake New York, there's a quarry above it, that's one spot this movie was filmed.
I just watched this movie. It was okay. It was not as great as others say it is. The best thing about it was Savini's work on it.

I've always had a hard time locating Holly Hunter too. At least Jason Alexander was easy to locate...in his very hilarious role as Dave. I'm glad Dave survived. I really enjoyed his character.
I thought Fisher Stevens was Edward Furlong's brother or something until I realized that he's the dude from Short Circuit.

Also, the scene in the mess hall, when Glazer says, "Hey i'm talkin to her," then that other chap mimics him :"Hey i'm talkin to her....can i talk to her too?"
That scene and the scene in the bunk house where our "hero", Alfred sees " a horrible face" at the window.
