What's going through your head as the 2007/08 NHL season approaches?
Oilers signed Souray to a five year deal. Now we have 8 NHL-ready defencemen and I feel Kevin Lowe will pull the trigger on a multi-player trade soon.
Ryan Smyth plays the Oil in Edmonton in mid-October, the first time since he was traded last year. Sparks will fly!!!

well I think I'm gonna have to start liking Colarado, cause they have my favourite player playing for them now, but they did used to be a Canadian team, so tha benefits, lol
the Leafs are getting a better team, which I'm looking forward to...but as usual, I wish I lived in the west, where the rest of my favourite teams are

I hope Iron Mike can help the Flames out. I am curious what he'll do with Huselius. After letting him go for nothing Florida, then reuniting him in Calgary when he's a half assed star.

Calgary should get the swift kick in the arse they deserve from Iron Mike. The new coach will take the Flames, tear them down and build them up again. Could be bad news for Edmonton when they play each other in the divisional games.

Two years ago (when they went to the Finals), the Flames would have responded well to Keenan. But, now after last year they have gotten a bit softer as a team. One of the stupidest things Playfair did in my mind was sent Ference and Kobasew to Boston. Kobasew has potential, but he is a bit slow to pan out, so I don't care about him. But, Ference is the kind of guy who gets paid nothing and doesn't get the respect he deserves. He was their only good defenceman two years ago in the playoffs.

If I'm not mistaken, the Flames resigned Iginla and Kipper.

I was just curious if any of you guys paid much attention to college hockey since I know it's not a particularly popular college sport. It was huge where I went (Bemidji State) and several guys have went pro from here, including former Calgary Flame Joel Otto.
Oh yeah, cool little video; I had a couple of classes with Udovich, he was a pretty big guy so I give that other guy props for this fight.

Anyway, I'd like to see anyone's thoughts on the subject :D
Steve

I don't think the Flames signed kipper yet, but Iggy signed a huge contract extension. Damn Flames! :p
The Oilers may be my team, but they need some serious re-structuring in the offices, MacT has to go. Losing Lupul was a mistake, and they'll see that this year, Smith however I think will be instantly loved in Philly. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the C, or an A right away.
That team loves toughness, and he has it in spades.

Who is the current Captain in Philly, by the way?
The Oilers need the young guns to have career years this upcoming season. Or it'll be a looooong season. :pull:

agreed for the Blackhawks, but not for the Hurricanes, I really don't care for them
I hope the Atlanta Thrashers are bought by that guy and turned into a Canadian team, there are only 6 Canadian teams, as everyone knows
and I heard they're thinking of making more teams...such random places like Las Vegas are being concidered...why not bring bad the Winnipeg Jets or Quebec Noriques, or put any fucking team in Manitoba or Saskatchewan

I'm kind of hoping the Avs develop Ryan Smyth into someone they can plug into Sakic's spot when he retires. I know Joe wants to play in the next Olympics, but he's getting up there in age.

I cant wait to see my new look Flyers in action!
Briere and Gange should be a great combo. Timmonen and Smith should beef up our blue line. Biron is the best goalie we've had in awhile. And we have a ton of young forwards ready to break out.
ADDED: To answer Shoe's question, who's the captain...
We got 3 new players, all of whom were captains on their former teams- Smith (Oilers), Timmonen (Predators), and Briere (Buffalo). So we'll have no shortage on leadership. I suspect Smith will probably be the captain.

Your Flyers should rise from the bottom to the top of the East this season. Good trades, great talent.
So far... nothing on the Oilers scope.

It'll be interesting there this year with the talent they've gained. I just hope they don't go the way of the Rangers and load up too much and dilute the mixture with superstars. Philli seems to be taking this upcoming year seriously. I know Buffalo must be sad to lose their star forward to the Flyers.

I've been thinking and I figure we have two options for Captain in Edmonton: Ethan Moreau or Steve Staios. Both are workhorses and take the pain when required. Someone mentioned Stoll as the Captain but he's still just a kid.
Steve
07-22-2007, 07:28 PM
Give it to Moreau. :)
Shoesalesman
07-23-2007, 08:30 PM
I think either guy could do the job, but Moreau has been with the team longer so he'd have the experience. Does anyone know if Staios was ever the Captain of the Atlanta Thrashers? I can't remember now.

I actually like Burnaby Joe and the Avs. Part of me thinks Joe is grooming Ryan to lead the team when he retires. Smyth signed for four or five years and Joe's getting up there in age. I heard Sakic wants to play for Team Canada one more time at the next Olympics and then retire. We'll see...

Another year the Leafs aren't coming to Edmonton...Screwed again :(. I really hope that the Leafs don't move Stajan in hopes of signing Peca. Seriously, the guy practically had his career ended last year and he's 32 years old. Stajan is in his early 20's and on his way to greatness. Please fire JFJ as soon as possible.

I can't believe this Jr. Summit Series thing. Canada is up 3-0. This is gonna be rather lackluster when it gets to our home turf.
Two of the Rangers key prospects (Russians) have been hurt in this series. It seems as though, at the Junior level at least, no one can fuck with Canadian physicality.

So far in the pre-season, the Oilers are 2 and 0. We beat both Florida and Toronto. Pre-season don't mean shit, but it's good to string a few wins together in preparation for the real thing in early October.
Didn't the Oilers win in pre-season OT against Calgary?
Anyways, my Canes lost to the Pred's and I am just hoping that my 2nd favorite team (the Blackhawks) can do something this year.

I heard the Kings beat the Ducks in London 4 to 1 on Saturday. Saw an interview with Pronger, who was a bit miffed that he had to travel a long distance to play a few hockey games.

I am not an Oiler fan and I hate the Ducks, Pronger is a good player but he seems like he is a whiner and just a guy that thinks he is better than he is. Whatever happened to the days of players being humble? From what I have heard Dominic Hasek is a real fool in real life (refusing autographs in non-home town cities and shit like that)

I heard that too. I understand that sports people (and music, movie stars and whatnot) are busy and sometimes don't like to be bothered. But IMHO, if I were famous for whatever reason and was getting paid 10 million dollars to shoot a slice of rubber in a net, pretend to be somebody else (actors :P ) or jam on a guitar, I'd be pretty fucking humble and sign my name on a shirt of a piece of paper.

The owner of the Blackhawks died. I feel bad that he passed away, but alot of Blackhawks fans are saying that it might turn attendance around. What do you guys think of all the new uniforms? Some people think they are pretty sleek, but some think they are too trendy and metro'ish. I personally like the Flyers new jersey.
I like the design/logos, but not that sleekness & tight look of them.
Shoesalesman
10-11-2007, 08:03 PM
I think they're okay. The Oil lost the shoulder flashes and we have pin-striping now. They look pretty good actually.
Now... if only they can rebound from the loss to the Wild last night. :(
I am not that big of an Oiler fan, even being from Alberta (don't worry I dislike Calgary too) but I have to admit, they aren't playing half as good as I thought they would be and have some major suckage right now, the Oil better pull it together soon. On the other hand, I cannot believe that my 'Canes are 2nd in the league right now and my backup team (the Blackhawks) are actually not doing too bad. It is still really early, but it does look like an interesting season. BTW, anyone else agree Ottawa will kick ass and then choke in the playoffs AGAIN!?!

Steve
10-15-2007, 04:02 AM
The Oil do need a kick in the pants, but it is still way early. There was a 7 game losing stint with Pronger on the team, and a slump every year. Hopefully this will be the only one. The losses wouldn't be as bad if three of them weren't against divisional rivals.
In the meantime, GO HABS! :D

I am surprised fighters don't wear their jerseys a size bigger so they can scrap properly.
I am getting nearer and nearer to being done with hockey, the new NHL just doesn't appeal to me. It has all the intensity of women's hockey with a couple dirty hits thrown in for good measure. At least in women's hockey there are rules against hitting, you would assume those rules carried over or something watching a game nowadays. Basketball on skates is just no fun.
I wish women's hockey would allow hitting. I think it'd be great to have a couple of Joel Otto or Mike Ricci style girls out there on the ice being the enforcers.

Had my picture taken beside the Stanley Cup, saw so many signed jerseys and sports cards it would make you cry. I took a picture of an old Hawks pinball game they had under glass.

BTW list your 3 most hated players?
1. Crosby (ever since that cocky goal in the juniors that Don Cherry hated, I have had dislike for this talented kid)
2. Scott Stevens - great player but remembered for dirty hits instead of being a good defenseman
3. Eric Lindros - Again, good player, but if he had gone to Quebec instead of whining and signing with Philly, he would have been a Stanley cup winner when they moved to Colorado.
Shoesalesman
11-16-2007, 02:36 AM
Excellent topic with the list...
1. Mike Modano - can't stand the look of him, he's a whiner, can't captain worth beans and he always scores clutch goals against my Oilers.
2. Darcy Tucker - anyone who guest stars on Little Mosque On The Prairie should be shot (sorry to say... that includes Ron McLean, because he should have known better). And Tucker's a dirty player. And he's ugly. And he smells. Like a poop sandwich.
3. Ed Belfour - overrated goalie who got a Gold medal in 2002 with Team Canada without doing one stitch of work to earn it. Piss on you, Eddie.
Honorable mentions... Mats Sundin, Bill Guerin, Chris Pronger, and Macabe.
And.... Oilers beat Canucks last night in the shoot-out.
On a Pale Horse

I used to have a "Make Your Anti Dream Team" thread on the old board...
1) Alexei Yashin. Held out 2 full seasons over contract disputes... got big contracts then didn't perform
2) Jaromir Jagr. Arch rival of the Flyers having played for both Rangers and Pens
3) Eric Lindros. Formely one of my favorites (as a Flyer). Held out many times, let his dad run his career instead of getting a real agent, and never lived up to his superstar potential.
Shit, Shoey....Modano and Belfour are two of my favorite all time players....
BTW, my all time favorite player list is
1. Peter Forsberg
2. Mike Modano
3. Joel Otto
4. Grant Fuher (left handed goalie)
5. Eddie Belfour (except for his no-autograph rule)
Another guy I can't stand is Hasek, I hear he can be a prick and he just seems moody, although he is a great player.
I gotta ask though, why does everyone hate Pronger in Edmonton? I can bet my bottom dollar if I was in his situation, I would have done the same thing. Although he does seem pretty sheepish.....

my favourite player in the history of Hockey is Bobby Orr, how I loved the days when I was a kid on NHL, no one really came close to my admiration for him until Yzerman hit the NHL...now that he's retired I've taken a fancy toward Ryan Smyth, why? a great hard as working player with not as much fans as he deserves

Mike Richards is an up and coming player I am keeping an eye on. He's on the Flyers of course. He's finally having a break out season in scoring, and he he's always hustling, scrapping for the puck, and shows good leadership for a young player.

So far you have, Smith is a true leader and brings a lot to the team he's on. When it comes to Lupul, he was just not given a chance with the Oilers to be the kind of player he is. Once they gave up on him a lot of the talk in town was he'll score 25-30 goals. If not here than wherever they send him.

Rick DiPietro, the goalie for the Islanders signed a 15 year contract and with a no trade clause I do believe. Sheets that long are insane, there's no telling what can happen to a player in that time, and the owner's on the hook for that as all the contracts are guaranteed.
Comcast (whom I believe owns the Flyers) and Charles Wang (Isles owner) can really take those kind of hits to spread that much cash around.

I don't know why the Leafs had to put Raycroft in net the past 2 games, I mean he's a great goalie, but not for the leafs, they are more of a defensive team and Toskala is the perfect goalie cause he's far more capable of making better saves, the Leafs practically rely on him, where as Raycroft being so rusty from not playing for over a month hasn't been doing too good, I just think the Leafs could have won the last 2 games...well the TB game for sure, if they had Toskala in net

I just knew that with so little time left in the third, and a man down, the Oilers would blow a regulation win. :p I'm really sick of seeing that, and it happened with 7 seconds left in the third. Granted this time they were playing an East team, but you can't give away points in every game. Yeah, they are awesome in shootouts, but the playoffs don't have 'em, and when you give away 1 point to division rivals you gain nothing.
The "boys on the bus" mentality of that organization has to go. This aren't the 80's Oilers anymore, and the offices need a shake up. As mentioned, the team is not terrible, they are however being run that way.

What's this I hear that Guy Lafleur has warrants out for his arrest? WTF!!! Something about lying in court about his son, who's being charged with a whole whack of stuff. I'll have to search that story out on the net and read up.

can you please give a legitemat reason as to why you hate the Leafs? cause you've kinda been avoiding the question...I just wanna know what the Leafs ever did to be so hated...is it cause we have won the Stanley Cup the second most times?
ADDED:
quite the win for the Leafs tonight against Ottawa, 4-2, the new guy Rob Earl got atleast 2 points, glad to see he's entered the Leafs on a good note, just like Moore did last month and Tlusty did earlier in the season, but the best news of all is that Coliacovo finally go a point from scoring the 3rd goal, he really deserved it, because he's truly a fantastic player just he always gets injured, I don't even think he's played 10 games this season

Okay my good man, take a knee...
For me, HNIC always programs the 5:00pm game as the Leafs against ____. Sure we get the Canucks/Oilers/Flames games at 8:00pm, but we're forced to watch a Toronto game first. Very rare to see the Habs or Sens out here unless they're playing the Big T.
And for the record, it's been 18 years since we won the Cup and over 40 since you have. lol.
Speaking of crappy nights in the HNIC, Toronto won against the Sens and the second game was the Flames and the Stars. Ugh! I turned off the TV and went to bed. Watching that game would be like watching a death match between your evil mother-in-law and the worst girlfriend you ever had.
Sadly, someone's gonna win.

but that makes Saturdays all the more forward to look to lol, besides you shouldn't mind Shoey, the Leafs usually lose on Saturdays, yesterday was a fluke

:p I guess there's that to look forward to. But what if they win. :(
Wow, last time I checked the Rangers scored five unanswered goals from a Montreal 3-0 lead. It amazes me how quickly momentum is lost and gained.

Great, Horcoff is out for the season with a shoulder injury. He's our top scorer. However... the Oil, tattered and wounded, pounded the snot out of the Flames 5-0 last night. Silver lining in the cloud of misery.

If anything, I'm hoping this just gives a chance for more of the young guys to get experience. I would like to see Schremp get a call up though, giving him one shift and then sitting him is stupid when he should get a chance to perform. Especially at this time with someone like Horcoff out.
At least there was the purchase of the Oilers by Darryl Katz. :D

I agree. I had a chance to see him play in training camp and the guy's got skill. He needs to work on his defensive play a bit though. Bring him into the fold!!!!

Forsberg watch is on. I wonder where he will land up. Front runners are Flyers, Avalanche, Red Wings, Ottawa and Vancouver. I hear Flyers are #1 choice, but could be biased local press.
I wouldn't mind having him. I wouldnt shake up the top lines or anything. Throw him on the third line, and if he gets back to his old form move him up.

Tucker scored 2 goals on Thursday and I had to miss the game:(, Wellwood and Newbury scored also, I love the games where the least expected players score

Hockey Day In Canada is here finally. Something like nine hours of hockey (all six Canadian teams playing = three games) today. Hope Calgary gets the bark ripped off them by the Oil in the second game.

I'm surprised the Leafs are beating Detroit 1-0 so far...I'm sure that will change...but the Leafs do seem to play best against the better teams...don't know how that's possible though
but I've always loved watching the Leafs face the Red Wings...last season didn't have them face each other which made last season uninteresting to me

I'm surprised the Leafs are playing a US team today!! Isn't Hockey Day In Canada supposed to be three Canadian teams playing the three other Canadian teams. Unless Ron McLean is on shrooms, I'm sure that's what he said today was. Then again... maybe I'm on shrooms.

We're even with Calgary this week. We beat them 5-0 earlier, last night they beat us 4-1.

Souray out for the season now. Rough season for the Oilers.
We're having injury problems in Philly too- Gange out again. Luckily we're real deep at wing so it hasnt hurt us too bad.

We're pretty much out of the playoff race anyway... so let's focus on playing spoiler to teams we dislike, like the Flames, Stars, Ducks. In addition, my feelings for the Leafs keep me hating in the East too. lol.

Holy crap, there was a tangle at the end of the Oilers/Canucks game last night. We lost 4-2 and the boys didn't like it one bit!!! Staios gave a nasty slash I think at the end. It's not like him to do something like that out of frustration.

Even though they lost 5-1 to St Louis, I was happy on Tuesday that got to watch the Chicago Blackhawks play on versus. It was their 2nd and last scheduled appearance on versus for the season. At least when ESPN had hockey I could see the Blackhawks play a bit more often than that.
Anyways I mostly get to watch my local team, the Washington Capitals play. It's actually exciting they are back in the playoff race. It'd be really great to see Ovechkin get a chance in the playoffs.

Things are looking good for my Flyers now, back in 1st place. They've got a potent offense and solid defense. The question marks are injuries and consistent goaltending. If Flyers can stay healthy I think they can make a strong run at the Cup.
Detroit and Anaheim have to be the favorites in the West.
I jinxed the Flyers with that post. Since then, they have lost 10 straight. They almost broke their losing streak this weekend, had 1-0 lead and gave up a goal with 3.7 seconds to go, then lost in OT.
Gange out for season, and now our best player Mike Richards is out for 3 weeks.

As of today, Peter Forsberg has signed a one year deal with Colorado, and Mats Sundin has decided not to leave Totrono. Should be interesting to see how trade deadline day goes tomorrow, Mats was one of the big ifs.
