Okay so what's the PS3 price now?

Also can't wait to get Stranglehold, MGS4, the next WWE Smackdown Vs. and RE5.

The 60gb PS3 is selling for $499 and there will be a 80gb PS3 I think in August that will retail for $599.

However, the 60 GB version is going to be discontinued and won't be available much longer. More details here:

It's no longer in production but Dave Karraker had this to say about it.

We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

They'd be wise to act as if the cheaper model is going to be scarce though, as it's basically like getting a PS3 for a hundred bucks off.

I think that's what their doing, for the long run anyway. I think it's dumb that they are discontinuing the 60gb though.

I agree and somewhat a little pissed and or worried. Just because, I have the 2 yr ext. warrenty with Best Buy. I mainly got it because of how expensive this unit was and the problems that continue to plague the 360. I'm not to worried though as I haven't seen any manufacture malfunctions compared to the 360. However, if something was to happen and there is no more 60GB versions in stock at Best Buy and I'm still within warrenty, what would then happen if they don't have them anymore? Did I waste money on an extended warrenty? Or will BB give me the next model up as they're virtually the same except the HD space. I paid the original $599 price which would still be the same price as the newer one coming out.

Well I had my first chance with the system...Or as my friends refer to it as "just a blu ray player that happens to play games." I asked them to D/L MK2 for me. And it was wonderful :D
Also got to play the RFoM demo....now having never played it. The control set up SUCKS!! Why on earth would you designate the right bumber the trigger when you have a pefectly good trigger button below it?!! So that was major annoyance 1. 2. Weapons selecting while set up like Gears of War...the button for it does not work for it. 3. Grenades do these things actually explode?? I tossed 3 of them into a nest of those aliens and not one explosion? WTF?? 4. The aiming and covering buttons..stink and should be reversed. 5. Graphics...Being totally objective here but Call of Duty 2 looked better. And I was playing on a 56in 1080p Samsung DLP. This just looked very plain no gritty details etc. This is a war right?? 6. Sound was the only saving grace.
Concept was cool, but the gameplay with the stock controller set up stinks period! Please tell me it can be customized??

I believe you can only play the game in 720p the highest. If the TV doesn't have that then it downconverts to 480p. That was my biggest issue with it, so you might have had that resolution outputting and the reason for the graphics being very bland. For me it wasn't as "sweet" as everyone made it to be, reason I got rid of it for Sigma.

I keep forgetting to ask this, even on the older ones.

But, is there a way I can change the background on the "home" screen, or like the main screen that loads when you turn it on? The media bar I think it's called?

It just changes colors by the time of the day I've noticed, but can't seem to find a way to even change to just a solid color to stay all the time or even like a wallpaper for the background. I know you can change it on the PSP but I can't find how to change on the PS3????

I don't think you can change that. I also believe that Sony will drag their feet in regards to customizing the PS3 as they believe the system will last 10 years.

I think we'll see a PS4 but that's a big maybe. I think the PS3 is already hurting them and if things don't pick up this year and beginning of next year then it doesn't look good for Sony. They really need to start getting some exclusive games back.

I'm one that will get the multiplatform games on the 360 instead of the PS3, and I'm sure there are others that does the same so that hurts Sony even more. Then with GTA4 offering DLC ONLY on the 360 then that's going to hurt Sony as well as people will just get it for that system.

Nintendo and Microsoft are the only one's coming out the positive end now, Sony is still losing money with each system as they keep adding a new one. They should have originally just came out with an 80GB HD a System and left it at that. Now they're back to square 1 kinda and people who went and got the 60GB system getting upset that a newer upgraded one is coming out for the same price they paid for they're 60GB. Sony is not really customer orientated right now.

I know the games are coming but that still not really till 2008. It didn't take Microsoft that long to get new, good games in for their system. What they need to do is just stop making stuff for the PS2 and just concentrate everything on PS3 already.

Jason's Storm
07-16-2007, 03:02 AM
I think Sony took their customers for granted. With the relative success of PS1 and PS2, I think they got full of themselves and didn't listen to the naysayers. All the while, I think Nintendo and Microsoft took advantage of that lack and exploited it. Lastly, while Sony may have sold more units, Nintendo actually made money, back in the N64 and Gamecube days.

lol, well it's not like anyone sit's on the menu screen for to long. It's not to big of a deal, just kinda would like to customize it a little. However, if it's like the PSP, gotta find the correct wallpaper format in order for it to be displayed properly. Although having the one screen/media bar is kinda better then the 360 I think.

The 360 is cool and you can have themes, but there's so much stuff on each "blade" that you can't really see the picture. Or some themes have dumb pictures and you can re-arrange the pictures. I wasted money on the Marvel Ultimate Alliance themes because they didn't have a preview of them just yet and I was hoping there would have been some nice artwork, however like the main blades you see and navigate had the suckiest hero's or the one's I didn't care for or liked. There was a cool Spiderman picture in it but he's on system blade, and I access that like maybe once a month if that.

YES!!! Damn that is an AWESOME GAME! Even though I've beaten it twice on regular xbox, once on normal then again on Hard and I was halfway through with the hurricane pack but I was at Alma with like no health and no health packs and no matter what I kept dying and I didn't have a save point before that.

Right now I'm whipping through the game and it's alot longer then I thought, even with the 3 extra missions with Rachel. it's still ALOT of fun. I could only imagine new players that never played this game before and how they are enjoying it. this is a must get for PS3.

Right now I have everything maxed out, essence/money is at 99999, all my weapons except for the newly inquired one I just got is maxed out (I just need a store to max it) Plus the combo's are awesome, I'll find a new one here and there. The newest one I like is tossing them in the air and doing some slashing then he dashes at them at the end decapitating them...

It's so good it's kept me off of the 360 for over a week!

The Heavenly Sword demo was released on the PS3. All I can say is I'm dissapointed. The one thing that pissed me off right off the bat is the game downconverts to 480i/p which I'm assuming if you don't have a 720p/1080p TV. Maybe it's in that uhhh can't think of the name, "viewing" mode whatever just for the demo, but that was dissapointing. Also there is no Block of Jump buttons. The combos were "eh" but it's a demo so won't be to harsh on it. Some of the counters are "cool" as with the throws the first few times but the animations get old and fast.

As of right now, if the game stays the same ESPECIALLY for the downconverting then I will not buy. If that's not a factor and plays in 1080i then maybe I'll get it. I'm sure I can get used to the controls, but the downconversion bugs me and that's the reason I got rid of Fall of Man.

Maybe developers are starting to get the hang of it. Hell technically speaking they should all look better on the PS3 if it's the power house they say it is.

20gb got discontinued, even if you could find one it'd still be the same price as the 60gb one. ($499)

Yeah, there should still be some in stock through.

It's 80gb, and it has 20 more gigabytes of space and comes with the game Motorstorm but it cost $100 more. I'm not sure, but I also hear the 60gb PS3 plays PS2 games perfectly while the 80gb may not work with all of them.

I'm sure Sony will honor the warranty even if it's discontinued. When they say it's discontinued, it just means they are not going to sell anymore of that model. Not that they won't support it. And you can buy a sata hard drive from any computer store like Fry's or even Newegg.com or another computer store.

There's talk about Killzone 2 being only in 720p and not upscaling to 1080i! I guess the same happened with Heavenly Sword and GRAW2 where it just supports 720p (and possibly 1080p, but NOT 1080i)

I'm getting really tired and fed up with this. KZ2 is a game I'm really really looking forward to and if that is not supported in 1080i I will NOT get that game. Same with Heavenly Sword. I wasn't going to get GRAW2 anyways since I already have on the 360 but it's this shit that is making my PS3 collect dust.

I know the quickest and easiest fix is to get a new tv that supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i/p, but I really don't "need" a new tv nor want one and or feel that I should have to get one just so I can play Next Gen HD Games in High Definition. The 360 upscales to 1080i with NO PROBLEMS on ALL their games! Why is it so hard for Sony to do this with their games/system?

Hell, bluray movies on the PS3 all scale to 1080i as well as PS1 & 2 games but it can't for PS3 games?

Back on the old forum some were confident that the new patch was going to start supporting upscaling to 1080i especially for Fall of Man and that has NEVER happened.

Now Warhawk has came out and another PS3 game I've been looking foward to but I've been seeing things about it not really supporting 1080i or if you choose that format it changes the stuff on the screen to smaller sizes?

It's pretty sad that this "all powerful, cell processor" next "true next gen hd" system is being out done and out performed in every way, shape, and form by the less spectacular 360. However, when the game has been multiple release and the 360 version is far superiour compared to the PS3 version.

I'm really considering on selling my PS3 and just sticking with the 360 if this isn't resolved soon or any updated info from Sony about this on going issue that's been made well aware of since launch!

That's why I don't get it. Lair got trashed on it's gameplay but that audio and visuals are spectacular. Who gives a shit? If they gameplay stinks no "gamer" is gonna dig it. Heavenly sword is only 6 to 7 hours long. Yet every sonyfanboy rants on how Gears of War is only 12 hours?? Oh but visually and sound wise it's awesome.

If that is all I have to look forward to is visual and audio awesomeness why the hell should I buy one??

Oh and they 80 gigs are out as of last weekend.

I got it for 360, I also have it on Gameboy Advanced which I got on accident on Ebay. The guy was supposed to send Super Street Fighter 2 but sent the puzzle game instead so I just kept it. I kind of don't understand it? I was reading about drop patterns and all but I'm kind of clueless on this game. I would get totally owned against someone that knows how to play. I understand the concept of grouping large stones with one color and all but I have a feeling there is more to the game.

I usually beat the computer like on accident or luck, also some of the achievements on 360 seem hard to get like get a 5+ combo while I've only managed to get like 2-3, is there anywhere online to see how people play or maybe some tips? Does it really matter who you use and all?

I know I have the 360 but it's exactly the same as the PS3 so maybe someone can help if they know more about it.

Also has anyone got the Tekken Add-On for $9.99 if you already have the Tekken 5 game? I downloaded the first Tekken that came out and I guess this new one has online play. So I was wondering how the lag is and if there's alot of people playing? Also how is it set up? Do you have a room and winner stays or do you just find someone then fight, once done throws you back to the lobby and have to find another random person?

Toejam

It makes a big difference which fighter you use in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.

They all have different drop patterns. You need to learn each characters patterns. In the new X' mode almost all the characters patterns have been changed/improved. Making it a more even for online play.
Out of the standard characters Ken is my favorite. You just have to be careful to not do small combos, because you will end up dropping mostly red counter gems if you do.
Never pick Chun Li, her drop pattern has the colors in clusters, so she can be her own worse enemy. The only character worse than her is Dan, but he is a joke character, all his counter gems are red.
For hidden characters I like Akuma.
On the PS3 you can select the secret characters by pressing down on one of the three bottum left characters on the character select screen. It is probably the same on the 360.

The more you play, the better you will get at using your opponents drop pattern against them.

Gamefaqs.com has some more in-depth FAQs. Look it up for the GBA or PS1.
I'm sure there will be new FAQs for the PS3 and 360 versions eventually, but the old FAQs are a good place to start.

I've become extremly dissapointed in my PS3. Here I have this $600 machine that can't support 1080i and I'm missing out on alot of game that I would have liked to play and or purchased. I know I could still get these games but I would then have to settle for a downscaled experiance and not get to enjoy the great details that these games are supposed to show off but I'm not going to spend my money on a game that won't upscale to 1080i because my TV doesn't have 720p.

Luckily Warhawk wasn't one of those downscaled games and works with 1080i because I was really looking forward to it and now that it's came out I love that game. However I'm not going to be playing it forever and there are alot of games what is coming out in the future that I would like to play but don't know what it will or will not support yet.

The one game I was looking forward to was Heavenly Sword but that wasn't a 1080i supported game so it didn't get purchased. Along with a few other games that I've wanted.

I can either live with it and hope future games starts getting more 1080i support, buy a new tv that supports all resolutions so I don't have to worry about these issue's and hope someone would buy my 65" HDTV. Well I would have to sell the tv first before I bought a new one, and the last option is to just sell or trade my PS3, take the loss and just stay with the 360 (which I wouldn't do because I mainly got it for the bluray player and I do have more BR-DVD's then HD-DVD's, but still never know especially if Uncharted, Kill Zone 2, and Metal Gear all don't support 1080i)

So it just sucks to be a PS3 owner with a 1080i only tv. All the bluray movies convert to 1080i, all the 360 games is 1080i compatible, all the HD channels on Comcast are 1080i. Why can't the PS3 support or be 1080i compatible with all their games?

So frustrating, especially when I bought one and heard of all these "rumors' that a patch was going to be made so games like Fall of Man would upconvert, that the downscale issue was just with the launch games but all future games would support 1080i and so on. Yet none of those have become true. I haven't even found any official word from Sony about this issue and how it's going to treated.

This all powerfull supposedly "better" then the 360, yet can't even upconvert games to 1080i so they can at least be played in HD and the way the developers ment it to be. Not one multiplatform game has been better on the PS3 as of yet and games are still being released in 720p only.

Such a shame.

This all powerfull supposedly "better" then the 360, yet can't even upconvert games to 1080i so they can at least be played in HD and the way the developers ment it to be. Not one multiplatform game has been better on the PS3 as of yet and games are still being released in 720p only.

Such a shame.

Didn't the 1.80 firmware update fix this?? I could have sworn I read that it does.

Zombie

Nope, and we're on the 1.93 software now. I think the 1.80 just "upscaled" PS1/2 games and DVD's. As far as PS3 games are concerned there is still no fix or anything other then the developer including it within their title. I emailed the people behind Fall of Man way back when and they said they are aware but not going to patch and gave me this whole reason why and how 720p is "so much better" BS.

Heavenly Sword, GRAW 2, Spiderman 3, are the one's I know of that don't support 1080i and will downconvert. Of course Fall of Man as well. Also rumors are Kill Zone 2 will be the same. Call of Duty 3 says on the back it supports 1080i but it has been reported as a misprint and confirmed it doesn't.

There is a thread on the Sony forums about it, I just don't want to go looking for it right now lol.

But no, still no fix or any official word from Sony or developers about this major issue.

As for the above about "finding out about all of this when you get a PS3"

It's simple -
If you you have an HDTV then in order to get full use of your PS3 game wise you NEED to make sure it can convert games at the 720p resolution. If it doesn't then ALOT of games will down convert and no longer be "HD" at 480p.

So if your tv is like mine and only has 480i, 480p, and 1080i then bluray movies will play 1080i, some games will upconvert to 1080i, but if you get one of the above mentioned games and or abunch of others, then they will look like a PS2 game on a regular tv. Instead of upconverting the game from 720p to 1080i, it downconverts it. So details in the levels won't be there, won't look as good as it can. I didn't think it would be to big of a deal at first, and or thought it was going to be fixed right away and or mainly just be with the launch titles but it's still NOT fixed.

If you don't have an HDTV then your fine and it's not going to affect you. Best bet is to get/have an HDTV that supports 720p and 1080p. Majority of the games run on a native resolution of 720p and movies at 1080p. You also need the HDMI cable to take advantage of 1080p and upscaling regular DVD's. (I believe it upscales them to 1080i, while component cables can scale stuff at 1080i, they don't reg dvd's for whatever reason).

In the end it's all BULLSHIT from Sony expecting people to go out and buy new tv's so they can "fully" enjoy their PS3 with no worries, and that's not something I or alot of other people can just go out and do.

Even if I wanted or had the money for a new TV, I would get one unless I could sell my old one but I don't know anyone that has $2k+ to buy mine. I have a 65" Widescreen HDTV which is perfectly fine for EVERYTHING I have except the PS3.

Holy Wow! I was bored with playing Halo tonight (GASP! Did a 360 user say they were "bored" with Halo 3!?!?!?! ) ok well not so much bored, just was tired of playing. So I powered the PS3 to watch 28 Weeks Later again (saw it for the first time last night and what an awesome movie!) and I remember'd the PS3 news letter I got about Ratchet and Clank demo being out, so I said what the hell might as well try it out since I dont have nothing else to do on the PS3 that much.

So I downloaded the demo and while that was going on I watched the extra's and behind the scenes of 28 weeks later while eating dinner. When all was said and done I went to try out this demo...

WOW! I never played any of the other game's in this series before. I really even knew anything about it other then seeing some commercials here and there when a new one was about to come out. First I was expecting it to probably downconvert to 420p as most demo's do and figured this would be one of those games that was 720/1080p only with no 1080i support. First thing I was wrong about as it loaded up in glorious 1080i.

Second, again not knowing anything of the other games I thought it was going to be kind of "kiddyish" I guess you could say as everything I've seen from it has been kind of cartoonish. Once again my second mistake. So then the only other thing I was thinking would be that it was probably made for kids so probably a little on the too easy side. Third mistake and by now I had struck out on thinking the worst about this game. That's where the WOW came in.

The controls were real easy to get used to and understand being there was no instructions or even a controller configuration screen to see/change the buttons. The graphics, while being a little cartoony was just absoloutly AMAZING. WIth what's coming at you to all the shit going on around you and this is where the surround sound really makes more magic and wowness. So I'm playing, learning this new game/series as best I could and by now I already forgot I was playing a "demo". The game starts off with the perfect balance for any new person just coming to the series and playing for the first time IMO as I'm one of those pople. The combat/action was great and fun and picked up as you get further and further.

At this point I'm just in a wow this is a pretty good game. Again being I forgot this was a demo I'm already jumping around exploring ever little inch as I was looking for power-ups and secrets. Then start to do some "grial running" (sp?) and getting tossed into the air on "gravity lifts' I guess we could call them. Break away bridges. I'm just having fun with this.

Then I get to a cut scene and BAM! It's over. SHows a nice ratchet and clank website plug and brings you back to the start menu. I was so upset cause I got so much into this game and now it was over.

As you can see I was amazed by this "demo" and now really looking forward to going out and buying this game. For the people who don't really believe demo's can sell games to "new" people of the game/series and thinks that it'll make sells either way by the fans of the series and people just wanting a new decent game. Well that's what this game did. I had no intentions of buying this game but the demo has changed my mind and will probably get this before any other new game that I was gonna get like COD4.

If you have a PS3 and just wnating something new to try then go ahead and download this demo, you won't be dissapointed.

So with this game being really cool so far, and just finding out that Uncharted: Drakes Fortune WILL support 1080i now then I have my hopes up really high for Sony now and think they're going to come out and bite people in the ass, with some of their games coming out. Might have taken a little bit longer the the 360 but some good quality, and FUN games are coming out now...

Checked IGN and they gave it a 9.4, Man I can't wait to be able to buy it!

I played the Ratchet and Clank demo the other day as well and I was blown away by it as you were. I probably won't pick up the game though, as I'm always low on cash and it's just not my cup of tea, but I could see this game selling to a ton of people. The demo was alot of fun though. I felt as if I had rented the game and was playing it for the first time, (Which I was) and I was going to be able to play it all night and try to beat it. And like you said, it was all over.

Zombie
10-28-2007, 01:32 AM
Yeah, I understand. But from the sounds of it, if you had the money you'd probably pick it up just based on the demo experiance. I read the whole IGN article and it mentions it's a little to easy but then I wonder what their skill level is. They do nothing but play games so I'm sure it's higher then mine. While I did die a couple times all because of falling and not being killed by an enemy it's just the first level so who know's how it'll play out later on.

I just remembered I have a $25 gift certificate from work that I can use like at Best Buy or something and gonna use that for Ratchet and Clank. I was going to use it for VF5 for 360 but I already have it on PS3 and I'm just getting it on 360 to play my friend so I probably wouldn't play to many "random" people like I do with Madden and NBA 2K8, so I can wait on that since he hardly plays. I'd rather get something new and different.

I also ahve $60 for a game but I don't know if I should get Orange Box or VF5, or COD4. So many good games going to be coming out and so little money!

oh I ment the Uncharted Demo. Cause Heavenly Sword, Conan, GRAW 2, hell just about all the demo's I've downloaded all play in 480p. Only one that didn't was Ninja Gaiden Sigma, so a huge reason why I only have 1 game on PS3 now. Well 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma which plays in 1080i and Warhawk but I did the download purchase version. DIdn't buy the actual disc. And that to is 1080i. And for Uncharted it does play in 1080i for the demo and from reports they did make it 1080i capable at the last minute.

That might have been ANOTHER game I would have passed up if it didn't support 1080i. For now at least, untill I can get another tv that's 720p and 1080p compatible then I'll buy more PS3 game. Oh, Ratchet and Clank Demo had 1080i support as well as does the full game which is something I plan on buying.

I played Heavenly Sword on a tv at gamestop that had it in it's true HD format so was either 720 or 1080p and it looked absolutely amazing. So I don't doubt the PS3's power, it just upsets me that they don't make games 1080i capable, it really screws over alot of people especially early HDTV adopters. So once I get a compatible tv I'll get Fall of Man again, Heavenly Sword, and any other game I wanted to get that I couldn't play in it's proper format. I could have bought them now but I wouldn't be able to hold off from playing it and don't want to ruin the experiance in a 480p non HD resolution.

So after seeing Heavenly Sword in 480p and then 720/1080p, there was a HUGE difference. I ment to download Conan on 360 to compare as well but keep forgetting but I'm sure there's going to be a huge difference as well.

Still there's no excuse for them to not make games 1080i compatible.

I got Ratchet & Clank last night (with Uncharted) and one the 2nd or 3rd level now and it's just jaw dropping. That will be the main game I use to "demo" the PS3's power along with Uncharted.

Things are looking up for the PS3, developers are finding more how to make games for it. Some are taking their time making games for it. It's going to be freaken amazing year next year for the PS3. Once more and more people get a full HDTV and all the exclusives comes out, a spike is going to generate soon.

It's a very exciting time to own a PS3 now.. It's kind of like "If you buy it, "they" (games) will come" lol and or "Best things in life for those who wait"

I have the 80 GB version and I've been re-playing Final Fantasy IX nonstop.... Anyway I got to the third disc and there is a part at the castle where an FMV is triggered and the game just freezes up and doesn't work. If I was starting fresh not having my PS3, I would ask myself a few questions to see what I desire out of my console system.

1. Do you want a Blu-ray player? (Do you have a HDTV?)

2. Do you see yourself spending a considerate amount of time playing online?

3. Do most of your friends have a PS3 or a Xbox 360?

4. Can you afford Xbox Live?

5. Do you have any brand loyalty?

6. Do you think Microsoft will come out with a new system in the somewhat near future? (Sony has stated they want the PS3 to last 10 years)

7. Which controller do you prefer? Xbox or Playstation.

Those are just a few questions I would go over to see what I would want.

1. Do you want a Blu-ray player? (Do you have a HDTV?)

I have an HDTV in my room. It's small (only 19 inches) but it has an HDMI port. And yes I'd like a Blu-Ray player but having a Blu-Ray player isn't 100% necessary in my case.

2. Do you see yourself spending a considerate amount of time playing online?

Not sure. Maybe not that much time but I'll definitely be online sometimes.

3. Do most of your friends have a PS3 or a Xbox 360?

Two of my friends have an XBOX 360. One is planning to get a PS3 as well.

4. Can you afford Xbox Live?

Probably but Sony's Online Network is free (except for third party networks), right? I like free.

5. Do you have any brand loyalty?

Somewhat, mainly towards Sony and Nintendo (I have a Gamecube and two PS2s). I'm not totally loyal to any company, though.

6. Do you think Microsoft will come out with a new system in the somewhat near future? (Sony has stated they want the PS3 to last 10 years)

Don't know.

7. Which controller do you prefer? Xbox or Playstation.

Playstation. This is only because I've only used a 360 controller once.

It seems like you would be best suited with a PS3.

Now to consider whether to get the 40gb or the 80gb. GTA4 has a 3 or 4gb mandatory install and MGS4 will also have a mandatory space install. I imagine more games in the future will have mandatory space installs. Also, there are games you can buy online in the Playstation store without buying a physical box. Those take up space. I also hear that Sony is trying to get something going similar to Xbox Live's movie download rentals. So have to keep that in mind. And the 80gb has, I think, 80% backwards compatibility with PS2/PS1 games where the 40gb has 0% backwards compatibility.

Another thing to consider is the 40gb comes with two USB ports and the 80GB comes with four USB ports. And the 80gb comes with one Memory Stick slot, one Compact Flash slot, and one SD memory card slot. These don't make much difference to me, but they might to you.

I think these are the only differences between the two different models.

I'll probably get the 40GB PS3 because I already have a PS2 so B/C isn't important to me. And I probably won't buy any games or movies online either. And the number of USB ports and whether or not the system has different Memory Card slots (SD/Compact Flash/Memory Stick) doesn't matter either.

There not selling the 80gb anymore. However I think the best bet would be to get an 60 or 80 if you can find one. You say BC isn't an issue, but once you play PS2 games on the PS3 and seeing the upconversion, you won't go back to the regular PS2. Also the Metal Gear Solid bundle is just a few weeks away and that might be one of your best bets as well but it looks to be only 40GB's. You say you won't download games now, but there are games that may not come out on retail. I to would rather have the disc anyways, but I got Warhawk as a download because it was cheaper and never had to leave the house lol. and it works just fine.

40gb's is small, also you have to factor in alot of developers are starting to make their games do installs on em. I can understand both arguments, but I was used to installing PC games, so it's not that big of a deal for me. I would rather have faster load times anyways, so a few mins of installing a game before I can play it isn't going to kill me. Which is why I wonder why so many people have a cow over it? People are just so impatient these days.

Now the good thing though is, if you do get a 40gb one, and you end up needing more space, you can just buy a regular hard drive instead of a PS3 only HD like how Microsoft makes people with their HD's. I think there's a little more to it than just popping it in and out, but instructions are online so shouldn't be a to big of a deal.

Personally, try to find a bigger HD one, also one that has BC compatability. You say you won't use it, but one day you might and you'll be thankfull you did get the best/highest version. Also, more space never hurt anyone. :)

One of the reasons why the PS1 & PS2 sold so many consoles... they're not built to last. I had to buy a second PS1 (and THREE X-boxes). I finally bought a PS2 last year, and I love it.

So... I've been warming up to buying a PS3. Mainly because I'm finally going to throw down and buy a big plasma next year and would like to have blu-ray capability. Might as well have the option to play a couple games as well.

I'm betting the PS3 will eventually sell tens of millions of consoles and eventually surpass the 360. I respect Sony in the fact that they stick with their consoles. The PS2 has been out for almost eight years and you can still buy games for it. Pretty amazing. You KNOW the PS3 is going to be around 5 years from now.

After playing the RE remake on Gamecube, I've never touched the original PS version and probably never will... I want to get the Gamecube RE remake as soon as I get my next paycheck. I also know that there are Gamecube versions of RE2 and RE3, but are they that different than the PSX versions? I really want to know since I own the PSX versions of RE2 & RE3.
ADDED:
For the backward compatibility function... does that apply to PS1 games as well? All PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games. But only some are backwards compatible with PS2 games.

I haven't noticed any difference in RE2, except for a slight graphical upgrade. These ports are essentially the same as the Dreamcast versions, but I think that's about it. I paid $40 for each of these games; they are a little rare.

The RE remake blows the original out of the water. The mansion has been expanded, the graphics are amazing, they added a backyard with graves, basement, extra rooms, hallways, & staircases, and there's also a path to a cabin. They've added a couple bosses and if you don't decapitate the zombies (or burn them) they come back to life and move like 28 days later. The lighting is phenomenal; they've added mini emergency weapons in case a zombie grabs you (daggers and a shock weapon). The RE2 & RE3 games are basically ports... :(

I'd like to see another RE remake on the PS3 or 360...

Do the PS1 & PS2 games save to the hard drive? Yes. In fact, I have a PS1 game saved to my PS3 hard drive right now (WWF Smackdown 2). It's under PS1/PS2 Memory Card Utility in the PS3 OS.

Thanks for the info. One of the biggest drawbacks of the PS1 was the damn memory card... One of mine gave out on me and lost a LOT of good saves. :(

One of the reasons why the PS1 & PS2 sold so many consoles... they're not built to last. I can't vouch for the PS1 as I have never owned one. I did own a PS2 that malfunctioned. I wouldn't say that my old PS2 wasn't built to last. The only problem with it was that the laser lens got dirty. I may be wrong but I believe this can happen with any device that has a laser lens such as a DVD or CD player. I did eventually fix my old PS2 anyway. I had to open it up and clean the lens. Opening up your PS2 does void the warranty but I didn't care as my warranty on my old PS2 expired years ago. The good thing about the slim PS2 is that you don't have to open it up (and void the warranty) to clean the laser lens. All you have is press open to open up the flip top (just like Gamecube and a few other systems) and the lens is right there for easy cleaning.

I had one of the original PS1s (from early '96); the first few batches had a problem with the rubber melting underneath the lens. The lens would drop and cause the player to skip, so you had to flip your player upside-down to get it to work properly! After a couple year of doing this, it finally crapped out on me. I did manage to link this old console (Two PS) to play two-player Doom and Wipeout XL. It was a shame they dropped the link in later models. Haven't had any trouble with my replacement PS1 or the PS2 I bought last year (knock on wood).

I used to really be down on Sony for that.... until I bought an X-Box. These malfunctioned even more, as I'm already on my third X-Box (original). I spoke to a local video game store owner who said there were a series of lenses & mirrors you had to clean and the drives had a tendancy to crap out. He wasn't able to fix my old X-Box. Anyways, if your PS1 & PS2 crap out on you, at least you can play your old games on the new PS3 (backwards compatibility). There are still several X-Box games I own that will NOT play on the 360... most notably Steel Battalion. I payed $150 for that because of the enormous controller... Once my final X-Box goes out, I'll never be able to play that game again. :misery:

Getting this for Christmas:

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo201/JeansieWho/ps3.jpg

After doing some extensive research, it seems the best way to go. Not only is it a limited edition (only 9000 produced, it's an Amazon exclusive), but it's also got a matte finish so I won't get finger prints all over it, and as much as we're saving buying it through Amazon*, I can upgrade from a 40GB hard drive to a 360GB hard drive fairly inexpensively.

*I've worked it all out. Ordering this limited edition 40GB PS3 (which includes the Special Edition of Metal Gear Solid 4) is going to cost $413, and that's including over night shipping. Going to GameStop to buy a 80GB PS3 and the Special Edition of MGS4 will cost $508 after tax. Considering I can get a good 360GB hard drive that's compatible with the PS3 for $70, I'm way better off buying the limited edition PS3 from Amazon.

Congartulations, Jeans.

Thanks, Gringo. :) I so can't wait!

You know, I feel really good to be getting this particular bundle at such a good price ($399), because when it was initially released, Konami slapped an MSRP of $599 (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2008/05/19/metal-gear-solid-4-limited-edition-gun-metal-gray-color-ps3-bundle-from-konami.htm) on it. I got it for $200 off the MSRP.

Featuring a Gun Metal Gray PlayStation 3 system with a 40GB hard drive, the bundle also includes a matching DualShock 3 wireless controller and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition game. The bundle will be exclusively available at Konami’s website, www.konami.com, for a SRP of $599.99. Pre-orders for the bundle begin on May 19th, 2008, and limited supplies are available.

I totally made out like a big dog on this deal. :sniffle:

What's funny is I really wanted to pick this bundle up when it was released (albeit with the 80gb hard drive) but couldn't even begin to think about affording it. Looks like it's worked out for the best in the end.

All of them have played fine, except for Dragon Ball Z and The Force Unleashed. Neither demo appears to have sound. Dragon Ball Z did the first time I played it, but every time after that, nadda. The Force Unleashed hasn't had sound since I installed it. What gives?

The problem with the crappy minigames is you can't play them whenever you want. You actually have to fucking stand in line for an open spot. By the time you actually get to it, you've built it up to epic scale that it falls flat.\

Home feels like it was designed by the marketing department instead of a game developer.

What's more, I don't understand why all the console seem to require that you have a digital doppleganger of yourself. Mii's, Avatars, Home...People. They're all fucking stupid, if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, i'll have each of one, but it's just so ugh to me.

So since getting my PS3 at the end of November, I've amassed quite a collection of games:

Alone in the Dark: Inferno
Battlefield: Bad Company
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Folklore
Grand Theft Auto IV
Mega Man 9
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Resistance: Fall of Man
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I was going to pick up The Orange Box, but it wasn't in stock so I ended up getting Battlefield: Bad Company instead.

I haven't actually gotten Alone in the Dark: Inferno yet, but I added it to the list because my brother assures me I'll be getting it in the next couple of weeks, and I've got a shelf space dusted off for it.

Honestly, LittleBigPlanet is the most fun I've had with a game since RE4.
It has passed MGS4 and as my favorite PS3 Game.
I'm in a constant state of mild laughter.
I've only tried a few custom levels online (Little Dead Space rocked)
because I want to try and finish the Story portion of the game before I start
creating my own levels and trying other's levels.

Hopefully LBP can keep my interest for awhile. RE5 feels like it is taking forever to come out.

But, then again I'm still waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.

I've got to figure a way to get my ps3 online. My router is on one end of the house and my ps3 on the other. With lots of walls in between. And our signal booster doesn't work.

Wireless router I take it?

That's affirmative. Running wires from one end of the house to the other isn't feasible either. Some days I catch a signal. Most days I do not.

Router is a Linksys with 2 antenna that we paid well over 100 bucks for. My house is a one story house but its long with a lot of thick walls. My grandfather built the house and apparently the lumber place was having a special on stuff so our house is double studded, double plied...etc.. all over. So yeah trying to catch a signal is a pain. Incidentally, the Wii is right there by the PS3 and it catches the signal most of the time. It still will go through periods where it won't connect, but I've had it connected long enough for me to download a few virtual console games.

I have the same issue with my PS3, Hood. It seems like an utter crapshoot whether it will connect to the net or not on any given day. What's disconcerting is my Xbox 360 and my Wii are approximately the same distance fromt he router and pick up the signal just fine.

I own a Linksys Wireless-G router. 2.4 GHz and 54Mbps. Model number WRT54G.

Hood, I would try out a Wireless-N router. They seem to work better for longer distances and possibly thicker walls. You could buy one locally and try it out and if it doesn't work, just return it with your receipt and get your money back.

Here's a review for this one Linksys WRT160N Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT160N-RangePlus-Wireless-N-Broadband/dp/B000Z3U1P6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top)

Our business building has 8 offices on 2 floors (metal-studs construction in all partition walls). Since we experienced some difficulties in receiving wireless phone (including cell phone) signal in some area inside the building, we were very concerned about using a wireless network. But amazingly, this small Ultra Range Plus can work nicely to transfer strong signals wirelessly across all offices..

http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/01/05/quotsacred-cow-slayingsquot-rumored-sony-playstation-jeopardy

UK newspaper The Times reports today that radical corporate upheaval is coming to Sony.

Long-overdue cost-cutting moves will, according to company sources, result in "sacred cow-slaying measures" that will "will abolish or fundamentally alter many of Sony's long-established business practices."

The reorganization will likely be made public following CES in Las Vegas. The massive trade show ends on January 11th.

Could the PlayStation hardware business get the chop?

That's hard to say, but the PS3 has been bleeding money since it launched in November, 2006 and the PSP is struggling as well. One ominous sign: there is talk of a shift that would turn Sony from a manufacturing to a content-driven business model.

PS3 manufacturing costs have generated huge losses for Sony over the past two years. Content would include games, of course, but Sony also has a stake in movies and music. If the company judges its console business as too costly to continue, it could decide to pursue a system-agnostic approach like the one adopted by Sega after it abandoned the Dreamcast in 2001. Ironically, back then it was Sony's PlayStation 2 which steamrolled the well-regared Sega console.

Alternately, the PlayStation business might be salvaged in whole or in part and manufacturing cuts could be made on the consumer electronics side of Sony's house.

In any case, we should know more next week. In the meantime, PlayStation 3 fanboys may suffer a few sleepless nights as they worry about the future of their system.

Dark days might be ahead for the console. This cold turn into another tale of hubris for the game industry.

I seriously honestly don't think Sony will just abandon the PS3 or making consoles in general. To many people are just talking shit because of the economy as a whole and because the PS3 is still the most expensive console on the market but what people do not realize is that by getting a PS3 people are actually saving a TON of money if they were to buy the "machines" seperately that the PS3 can do. Hell the Bluray factor alone is more than worth the price of the console.

Now granted that's what is kind of hurting the console because they tried to appeal to more consumers than just gamers. They thought the name Playstation would be good enough for people to want to get it, but what they didn't know though was that we were going to be a hurting economy right now and people are spending their money alot more wisely then before and alot more "impulse buyers" are not making those impulse purchases anymore or as much as they used to.

What Sony needs to do is assure people that this IS the console to get and that it WILL be supported for years to come. I think alot of people are kind of worried that they go and spend $400 and then in another year or two PS4 will be coming out, kind of like how Microsoft is kind of abandoning Vista and trying to push Windows 7 out and focus on that more. Which that pisses me off because I like Vista and OS's are not cheap, and I do like to have the latest and greatest OS but at the same time I don't want to go and spend another fortune for another OS that's the same with just a few new tweaks that could have easially been added to Vista but they want to basically "re-release" vista but with a different name. I think Microsoft shouldn't give up so easy and still keep trying to support and get Vista out more.

But I don't think Sony is just going to abandon the PS3 to try and start a PS4 thinking they've already lost. Although I think they let developers release to many new games on the PS2, that's another thing I believe that hurt them and the reason why the PS2 is still doing kick ass. I bet if they didn't have as many titles come out last year as they did then more PS2 owners/players would have gotten a PS3 a little sooner then what they're planning. It also comes down to GAMES!!! There is just not that many GOOD/AWESOME games coming out for it, same with the PSP. Then the ones that are multiplatform play and look better on the 360 than the PS3 and that's another thing hurting them. Oh and let's not forget probably one of the BIGGEST reasons the PS3 is not doing so well is because it DOWNCONVERTS games if they are 720p only!!!

That has to be the STUPIDEST thing Sony has done with the PS3 and have not tried to fix the issue even with newer PS3 models. Thats another reason why I only have ONE game on the PS3 which is MGS4 which I still havent even played. I played it once for like 45 mins back in July or August I think and havent touched it since. There's nothing wrong with it, just I have more fun playing my 360 and have more games on the 360 that I'm trying to play/complete or get achievements for before wanting to play through MGS4. But there is ALOT of games that I would have bought if they didn't downconvert to 480p. I guarentee you I would probably have at least a dozen if not more PS3 games if that downconverting was never an issue. Also if they had the trophy system out alot sooner then that would have made me get alot more games as well.

There's some 360 games I would have gotten for PS3 if it didn't have the downconverting issue, most of the single player games I probably would have gotten on PS3 instead of 360. I also know alot of people who won't get it till they either fix the downconverting issue (which will probably be never) or till they get a better HDTV but we're not made of money and really we shouldn't have to go out and buy a new tv just because Sony didn't want to make their games upconvert to 1080i like the 360 does. Hell, if Sony was to release a newer PS3 model that would upconvert ALL their older games and ALL FUTURE games ala the 360 then I would be willing to buy that other version/model and the PS3 I have now I would just move to my regular tv and use it like a PS2 since I have the 60gb one that is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games and I would let the kids use that. I seriously would do that because there is alot of exclusive games I wanted and or want to play just not going to play them in 480p resolution so either they get a new model out that will upconvert to 1080i, patch the systems out now like they said they were going to do like 2-3 years ago, or I finally get a new tv that has 720p built in but that probably won't be till at least next year the soonest since my income tax and my huge work bonus I get this year is pretty much gone to catch up on bills.

But I wouldn't worry people, the PS3 will be here to stay for awhile and Sony will not just abandon it like Sega did with the Dreamcast. This is the first time Sony is behind in the console war and losing money. They're still making a ton off of the PS2, they just need to stop supporting that and go full blast on supporting the PS3. They should also get backwards compatability back on the PS3's as well, thats another group of people I know that won't get it now since the newer models dont support that and they just didn't have enough for when they did to get them back then. Another stupid move Sony did.

But people, analyst's whatever, critics, and all need to stop crying that the PS3 is "to much" and "More expansive than the Wii and 360" and look at what the people are actually getting for their money. Sony is smart that they haven't cut the price as low as the 360 because they are already losing money for what the PS3 can do and people need to look beyond it just being able to play games. Once people can do that then they'll see the real value of the PS3 and it will eventually start to sell more. If they do lower the cost then yea, there will probably be a huge surge in sales. Hell I think people already know they're getting a hell of a deal with the price the PS3 is at (if they have an HDTV) and just waiting and praying they lower the price, but if they dont then they'll eventually give in. Especially after this month when more and more people start getting their income taxes.

While the high price in comparison to the other two consoles is definately a sore point, I think Sony's completely lackluster library, shit (though free) online service, and initial "holier than thou" attitude has led to their current downslide in profits. Sony attempted to make a luxury console and a graphical powerhouse, but because of the system specs and high cost for making games, 3rd party publishers have quickly bolted from the console.

Sony's biggest flaw, above all else, is their total ignorance of their consumer base. They attempted to force feed their loyalist this 600 dollar, gameless barren wasteland of a piece of machinery and it has bitten them hard in the ass. It has two or three console exclusive titles worth having (MGS4, Warhawk, Uncharted, Resistance), the others (Haze, Lair, Heavenly Sword) have ranged from ho-hum to piss poor. I myself only own two PS3 games, and I only play Uncharted, Drake's Fortune regularly. And home is utter garbage.

The PS3 in general is a failure as a console and I honestly don't see it gaining any momentum this generation. Their failure to understand both the mainstream gamer market (Which the Xbox 360 dominates) and the casual gamer market (The Wii is printing money off of these people) was their unfortunate downfall.

Like I said before, this is a lesson in hubris and the dangers of pride.

Another thing Sony has done that is not a wise decision is not make any of the new PS3'S backwards compatable. That chases away potential buyers also.

While I agree it was a shit move to strip down the backwards capability, it didn't really significantly hurt their core market. I know fewer people who complain about it than who don't give a crap.

As for the PS3 library -- apart from a couple of exclusives, it's practically identical to the Xbox library. Every game my friend Richard owns for his Xbox, with the exception of Halo 3, I can get on the PS3. I can also watch Blu-rays/DVDs without buying add-ons, I can chat with folks online, play multiplayer titles without added cost, watch my extensive library of AVIs, WMVs and MP4s, and copy my music collection onto the system directly from a flash drive (which the Xbox can't do for some reason).

For $399, I think I'm getting my money's worth. Yeah, it sucks that I can't play my PS2 games on it, and I wish that I could play my own music collection while playing GTA IV (which you can do on the Xbox 360), but otherwise I'm content.

Sony attempted to make a luxury console and a graphical powerhouse, but because of the system specs and high cost for making games, 3rd party publishers have quickly bolted from the console.

I don't think that's necessarily happening. There appears to be a crap load of 3rd party games in line for 2009, with more yet to be announced. It's true that developers have a more difficult time creating games for the console -- the code is apparently a real bitch to work with -- but they're starting to wrap their heads round it.

The PSP, on the other hand... I'm afraid it's pretty much a dead fish. Sony seems to be losing interest in it, anyway.

I actually am glad Microsoft makes people pay for online multiplayer. If it was free then we would have even more idiots playing online ruining games and probably make it way more laggy. So I'm all for charging people to play online.

I've played Warhawk here and there and I've had decent matches in there, but that's the only game I've played and really have for online/multiplayer wise. Well I also have MK2 which I'll play every now and then as well as MGS4's online but I've never played or tried it. I did try the Metal Gear Online Beta like once maybe two times? and I just couldn't get into it and it gelt really goofy. Idea is cool, but still goofy none the less and controls sucked IMO...

The 360 can stream videos from someone's computer and I"m not talking about doing it with WIndows Media Center. There's another way to do it which I think alot better than trying to do it with media center. I don't know anything about ripping/storing music to the system but I know I can stream it the same was as the video's.

And yea I agree most of the multiplatform games are on both systems the main thing though is if it doesn't support 1080i then it downconverts to 480p automatically if the tv it's being played on does not have 720p. The tv's that are like that are mainly the one's that came out like 3-5 years ago, so early adopters like me only have 480i/p, and 1080i and that's it. So if someone that has a tv like mine and has both a PS3 and 360 then it's no contest on which version of the game someone is going to get when it doesnt support 1080i, thats one HUGE reason I mainly just get my games for 360.

The other thing about the games being on both systems is that majority of the time the 360 version is better than the PS3 version. Could be graphics, framrates, loading times, controls, etc... and that's what hurts the PS3 again, but that's only if that "person" has both 360 & PS3. If they don't then there's no choice and if you want to play said game then you'll get it for the PS3 and be happy with it. I know there's people that have the downconverting issue but ONLY have the PS3 so for the time being they just make due with playing it in 480p. I tried that with the first Resistance game but I just couldn't get inot it knowing that it would have looked 10x's better if it didn't downconvert so ended up getting rid of it till it either gets fixed/patched or I get a new tv so that way I can enjoy it how it was ment to be played.

I'm not trying to say one is better then the other, I like both for things it can do the other one cannot. I just 99% of the time will get a multiplatform game for 360 because its usually better graphics and framerate wise, have more friends with 360's so can play with more people I know vs just the few I have on PS3 and only 1 actual person I know in real life but he has a 360 to and he usually gets the 360 version as well. Also the multiplayer IMO just feels better than on the PS3 and I think that's just because there is waaayyyy to many people on Sonys servers and just makes for a not so good experiance (sometimes, could also depend on how the game is made and if they have dedicated servers or not) and then you have the issue if it's 1080i compatible or not. If it's not then none of the above matters, it's automatically a buy for 360...

Like for example, lets say there was 2 completely different versions of MK vs DC and the PS3 had like different and better characters or had like say 3-4 more extra fighters for each side. So like say they had Johnny Cage, Melina, Kung Lao, Reptile and then for DC they had like Robin, Mr Freeze?, Poison Ivy, and we'll just say freaken batgirl or supergirl. And the 360 version was just the regular version that's out now, and they were both the same price. BUT, the PS3 version was 720p only and didn't convert/support 1080i. I would automatically get the 360 version even though it ment losing extra fighters only because I'd rather play it in HD and not in a crappy 480p resolution... It's not even like the graphics sucking, but the while screen is messed up and not widescreen and things are way bigger then what they should be.. It's just horrible lol

Of course if it got patched or I got a new tv then I'd trade in the 360 version and would then get the PS3 version or just buy it again but on PS3.

I can also watch Blu-rays/DVDs without buying add-ons

I almost pissed myself when I watched a DVD on my 360 on my HDTV. The image quality was as bad as an old DVD player I had kicking around from 5 years ago. It's totally nonfunctional as a DVD player if you're HD. I heard it looks better with the HDMI cable, but don't quote me. Component... no.

Just Jeans

The 360 can stream videos from someone's computer and I"m not talking about doing it with WIndows Media Center.

The PS3 can do this too, although I tend to use the media server function for the purposes of copying rather than streaming. Saves me the hassle of having to move video and audio files with a flash drive.

The other thing about the games being on both systems is that majority of the time the 360 version is better than the PS3 version.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the only game I've played on both systems. It looks identical to me. The only real difference, so far as I can tell, is the initial load time (it's about twice as long on the PS3). The PS3 version doesn't seem to lag as much during mass carnage runs as the 360 version, but I've not played the 360 version near as long.

What games are there where the graphics are hugely better on the 360? Most of the multi platform reviews I've read suggest "slightly better" graphics between systems, but never really mention anything major. There's certainly doesn't appear to be a PS2/Xbox gap in terms of graphic quality.

I heard it looks better with the HDMI cable, but don't quote me. Component... no.

I've watched a couple of DVDs on my friend's 360. He has it hooked up via HDMI. If the component image actually looks worse... then yikes. :X

Question about the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. My bf and I have had a PS3 since they came out...actually we have 2 of them...one in living room and one in bedroom. Whenever we put a Blu-ray movie in, and how some features on Blu-rays are 480p or 480i.....when it transitions back and forth to either standard def or to hi def, there is a slight lag in the picture popping up. If I'm watching the movie which is 1080p.....it ends....I wanna watch the trailer which, say is in 480p, when I play that said trailer, the picture doesn't pop up until about 2 or 3 seconds later....even if I can here the sound already. That irks me. Is that normal?

And when I first turn my PS3 on, and turn my HD tv on, there is a minute or 2 of flickering.....snowy, then picture. Snowy, then picture. Then it clears up. I mean, we love the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, don't get me wrong. I think it's still the best one out there to date. But this just aggrivates the shit outta me. Has this happened to anyone else?

Zombie
01-11-2009, 01:18 PM
Yeah mine does that to. Its like going through the tv's resolution to see which is the best I think? I think mine will go snowy about 2 times very briefly though. As for when it switches I can't recall or remember? I know it will kind of do what it does when turning it on, like trying to find the correct format resolution? but I also have it hooked via HDMI so it will upscale it to 1080i anyways. That might be the reason actually. If yours is hooked up via HDMI then what it might be doing is switching down to 480i/p but then snaps and thinks for a sec and then goes back to 1080i?

I'll have to watch a special feature or regular movie to see if it does that. Do you have something that you just watched recently or what Blurays have done this and if so what or where were you at like menu screen wise and what did you select and I can see if I can reproduce the issue if I have the same movie you tried it in. If you can list a few movies just incase I don't have the one you listed.

Just Jeans
01-12-2009, 12:38 AM
Mine's never done that, Shamrock. When I boot up a game or a Blu-ray film, the TV will turn blue and have NO SIGNAL on the screen for about 2 seconds (it does this while the PS3 switches to the media's supported resolution) and then it goes back to normal, but it never does it during the film/game. Only when the film/game is initially booting up. I've never had an issue with it popping back and forth between snowy and image for minutes at a time. That sounds like something wrong with a wire or a port.

Patrick
01-12-2009, 07:26 AM
Yea it will do it 3 or 4 times...then...everything is fine. It normally does it shortly after the PS3 is turned on...or after switching back and forth between 1080p and 480p resolution. If it goes directly from the HD movie to a HD feature, then nothing. Or a 480p movie to a 480p feature, it's fine. It's just like when it has to upgrade or downgrade the resolution input/output, it gets kinda screwy for about 30 seconds.

Zombie...it's just about any movie.

PS3 will be $299 in April, analyst predicts

Could the days of the $400 Playstation 3 be numbered?

So says financial analyst Michael Pachter, who predicted this week that Sony will trim the price of its cheapest Playstation 3 pack to a "more affordable" $299 in April, and that an Xbox 360 price cut will follow by June.

And the Wii? Don't hold your breath. "We expect Nintendo to maintain Wii pricing at $249 until the company sees signs that demand is slowing, which means a price cut may not happen until late in the year, if at all," Pachter said.

Like any analyst, Pachter, who is employed by securities firm Wedbush-Morgan, isn't always right, but he boasts a healthy hit rate at anticipating similar moves in the past, notably predicting PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts in 2007. Don't expect official confirmation from either Microsoft or Sony, though: telling your customers about price cuts four months in advance tends not to be a very common strategy.

Ailing Sony, which is tipped to be about to post its first annual loss for 14 years, could well expect a significant sales boost if Pachter's prediction pans out. The Playstation 3 is heading into 2009 with a bumper lineup of upcoming exclusive games, including Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and superhero-themed DC Universe Online, and a lower price point could well lend the console much-needed momentum.

A few people have described Fallout 3 to me as a fps type rpg. Other than that, the only medieval rpg I can think of is Elder Scrolls IV, although I'm sure there are more.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is made by the same people who made Fallout 3 -- both are basically MMORPGs without the MMO elements. They're huge, expansive, richly immersive action-RPG titles. Both are highly recommended.

I've only played the demo, but Eternal Sonata looks pretty good. The main character is classical composer Frédéric Chopin, who on his death dreams the world in which the game is set. What I've played is pretty cool. It got a lot of good reviews when it released on the Xbox 360, and even better reviews on the PS3 (it includes a bunch of additional content). I really need to pick it up.

i bought my ps3 for 50 bucks off of a crackhead...beat that! its the only reason i have it cause I would never spend over maybe 200 for a video game system cause i only play sports games and resident evil games here and there.

And still...even though I have a ps3, I play my thousands of NES, SNES, and Genesis ROMS way more than my ps3.

Firmware 2.76 went live tonight:

North American Download (http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2009_0514_d6856f234f3066b94dc88ab430a63bfb/PS3UPDAT.PUP)
Europe Download (http://deu01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/eu/2009_0514_d6856f234f3066b94dc88ab430a63bfb/PS3UPDAT.PUP)

I guess most people just download it via the PS3, but I prefer to download it on the PC, put it on a memory stick and install it to the PS3 that way. I dunno why. In any case, this firmware apparently only modifies a few things, stuff that's supposed to make the PS3 hardware run a little better -- I hear loading someone's profile information is nearly instantaneous now.

Also, there's speculation (http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/05/11/new-ps3-firmware-to-launch-at-e3/) going round that Sony is going to release a feature-heavy firmware update during E3 this year.

According to PS3-Sense.nl and their “reliable source”, Sony is getting set to release a firmware update during E3. The translation from Dutch says that the firmware update will be “fat” meaning very feature heavy. Last year Sony had something like the ready to go during E3 with the PSN Video Service, so something like this is not at all far fetched.

Will cross game voice chat finally be released? What other features could be in this firmware update? We are just going to have to wait until E3 to find out.

PlayStation LifeStyle will be live-blogging the SCEA Press Conference so you will know the second this is announced, if it is announced at all.

If it's true, there are two things I'm hoping for: the ability to play your own music in-game -- because frankly I'd rather listen to my own track list while playing Grand Theft Auto IV, which you can do on the 360 -- and software emulation support for PS2 games. I suppose cross-game voice chat would be nice too, and I really wish they'd catch up with the times and add the MKV container to their video playing capabilities.

Even if it sucks, its free. Give it a try.

Funny thing is, a guy on my friends list kept sending me messages last night about
being willing to share the game with me. The only thing is you need to share your
account log in info, and I wouldn't give that out to save my momma. So, I politely
declined, then woke up this morning to find out the game is temporarily free anyway.

Some asshole has hacked into my PS3 account and downloaded about £30 (about $50 US) worth of stuff and the money went straight from my bank account

Do you think the police may be involved as it is stealing money (isn't it?)

Well now they tell me they won't give me the money back even though they do know my account was hacked and who did it (they won't tell me who it was)

I suppose I'm lucky I only had £30 odd in the account (they cleaned it out) as I can have up to £600 in sometimes (but very rare) even more

I have deleted that card from the account and will use a spare bank account I have which never (well rarely) has any money in and I'll just transfer how much I need whenever I want to DL anything

That SUCKS!!

Since you can download purchases up to 5 times on your account after paying for them,
I was wondering what he spent the money on. Is it anything you would use?
Wonder how he got access to you're account?

I had my card info on my account for over 2 years because I'm too lazy to type in the info every time I want to buy something. (I just took it off. :shifty:) If someone had got into my account they could have downloaded most of the store.

Anyway, after 2.5 years I finally upgraded my HD from 60 GB to 320 GB after having to clear out the game date a few times to make more room.
Despite being a little leery about it, I went ahead and made the switch and everything went fine. It really is very easy to make the switch. I took about 2.5 hours, an hour to back up, 5 minutes to switch HDs, about another hour to restore, and finally about 20 minutes to sync my trophies.( Maybe I have a lot of trophies to sync all at once, or maybe it was my connection to the server but that seemed like forever to wait for it to sync.)
Overall very easy and totally worth it.

Has anyone heard about maybe a downloadable demo for Final Fantasy XIII to your PS3? I haven't, I'm just asking if anyone knows if there is or will be. My boyfriend would freak if there was. I wanted to get him the demo that came with the Japanese FF7 Blu-ray but they are kinda expensive on eBay.

I've been in Texas since early June and haven't touched a video game yet. I've thought about picking up a PS3, possibly in August. I'd love to see a software emulation update for the system to enable PS2 compatibility... as I've yet to complete Silent Hill 3 or Shadow of the Collosus (excellent games). The only thing stopping me right now is that I'm not really excited about anything currently out there for the PS3 (and I already have a 360 & Wii that collect dust). If blu-ray movies dropped in price, this would be a no-brainer. I just can't see spending $30 on new movies. :(

If they release one, it'll be a couple of weeks prior to the game's release, so it's still a ways off.

I wanted to get him the demo that came with the Japanese FF7 Blu-ray but they are kinda expensive on eBay.

Unless he has a firm grasp on Japanese, it'd be a waste of money. The battle system is extremely command heavy, and it'd be almost impossible to play without an understanding of Japanese.

I just can't see spending $30 on new movies.

I don't think we've ever paid $30 on a Blu-ray. I got Ghostbusters and Friday the 13th: The Killer Cut for my birthday, and neither film cost more than $20.

Guess I'll have to shop around for blu-ray flicks. What's a good place? I'm usually stuck next to a military base (always deployed), and they NEVER sell blu-ray movies at a good price. I'm currently at Sheppard AFB, and they're selling Batman for 30 friggin bucks. Batman was the first movie I picked up on DVD, so I'll have to make it my first blu-ray as well.

I almost picked up a PS3 today out of sheer boredom. I saw a Doctor Who show on Jeans' PS3 and the HD was pretty sweet. I went to the local Gamestop; I thought Fallout 3 was pretty cool, but I hear it's going to be re-released with all of the expansions in a couple months, and I can always get it for the 360. If I do pickup a PS3, I'll probably pick up Fallout 3, and Alan Wake looks amazing...

Thanks, bro. I've been doing a lot of shopping on Amazon over the past several months, as they have a lot of obscure horror movies (Cannibal Holocaust... yay) and I've only had a problem once over 20 transactions.

I plan on getting an HDTV once I get home next year for the World Cup, so that's more incentive to buy a PS3 for blu-ray. I've heard that it's one of the better blu-ray players out there, so I'm killing two birds with one stone. My only gripe at this point... blu-ray movies aren't shaped like DVDs. GDC: Sony Reveals PS3 Slim, Slashes PS3 Price to $300 (http://www.pcworld.com/article/170393/gdc_sony_reveals_ps3_slim_slashes_ps3_price_to_300 .html)

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo201/JeansieWho/Sony_PS3480.jpg

And there you have it, the fabled Sony PS3 price cut as well as confirmation of a trimmer, slimmer iteration of the PS3 after over a year's worth of gossip and false leads and photo-forgeries. The PS3 slim looks, as you'd expect, kind of like a diet-PS3, except for the part where it's still full-featured only priced $100 less. Make that 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, roughly as tall, but thinner, with a matte finish all around.

It certainly looks nifty, that much thinner, speaking as a guy who had to lug two Xbox 360s and PS3s and a Wii overseas in carry-on luggage. Never mind the fact that the original PS3 is just about the ugliest-angled console to come along in decades. But I digress.

The current 80GB PS3 had been selling for $400, though a few retailers slashed prices in recent days and fueled speculation a price drop was imminent. It's not clear whether the PS3 slim actually replaces the existing model or not, but if you don't care about aesthetics, the price of the PS3 just dropped across the board, meaning that as of tomorrow, you can buy an existing PS3 anywhere in the US for $300 (or depending on your international locale, 300 euros or 29980 yen).

PS3 Slim availability? By September 1, everywhere.

The announcement of the slim leaves me with hope we'll hear something about PS2 backward compatibility soon.

The new PS3 slim model does not have PS2 backwards support, according to the CNET review on CNN (technology section). Hopefully they'll make a patch/download in the future.

I think with the prevelance of digital distribution these days, backwards compatability on disc will be dropped all together. After all, why tailor the PS3 to accept PS2 discs when they can just charge you for the game as a download.

This is why I still own a PS2. Didin't stop working when I bought a PS3, and I don't expect it to anytime soon.

It's not that surprising really.

If you have the ability to just put a PS2 game on a PS3, they can't make anything off of it.

If your PS2 craps out, they can sell you another PS2.

If you want to play a PS2 game on your PS3, then you have to download the game and pay for it (pay for it again if you already have it). Either way they're making more money. Why go through the trouble to make it backward compatible when it closes off two possible sources of revenue?

The Taff

Xbox 360 has gone the same route, so they aren't much better. But atleast they retain what backwards compatible games they have console to console. This mentality might stem from Sony and Microsoft seeing the Wii's virtual console's success and trying to jump on board that.

Oh well, my PS2 and Xbox never stopped working, so I'm still good.

I simply don't have enough room for all these consoles anymore: PS2, PS3, GameCube, NES, SNES... if I want to play my PS2, I have to unhook my PS3 and hook up my PS2. It's a real headache.

I think with the prevelance of digital distribution these days, backwards compatability on disc will be dropped all together.

Probably moot because of the "We'll never ever do it" nonsense (which I think is a bald faced lie, coz eventually they'll want to sell PS2 games over PSN), but what the hell:

That just doesn't fit in with Sony's current marketing trend. If they eventually release the new software-based PS2 emulation, it will more than likely play physical copies, just like the PSX emulation (the same backward compatibility software that runs PSX games downloaded over PSN also runs physical PSX discs, and it runs them identically).

Considering third party companies are still publishing physical PS2 games -- there's a rumor going that Persona 5 will be a PS2 exclusive -- I can't see them stripping physical games out of the equation entirely.

If you want to play a PS2 game on your PS3, then you have to download the game and pay for it.

They don't sell PS2 games over the PlayStation Network, only PSX titles. And physical games are every bit as playable as the downloads.

Sony's John Koller said flat out that backwards compatability isn't coming...

And I say he's talking rubbish.

After Sony has powered through the majority of quality PSX titles and the sale of back-catalog games via PSN begins to stagnate, they'll reexamine the PS2 backward compatibility issue.

The Taff
08-21-2009, 08:26 AM
Keep telling yourself that. They've shown no signs of returning to it thus far, and it would appear that they are now vocal about it as well. Most of the PS3's sales are based on people wanting to play PS3 and Blu-ray, not the back catelog of PS2 games.

And then there's the fact they are still selling PS2s. If they intended to have the PS3 be backwards compatible, wouldn't they cease production of the PS2 to bring more focus on their current generation console?

It's not rubbish, they are playing both previous and current generations. Especially since the PS3 has been hemoraging money since its launch, they need the revenue from the PS2 to stay in the game.

Just Jeans
08-21-2009, 11:19 AM
Keep telling yourself that.

I will, thanks.

They've shown no signs of returning to it thus far...

Because it's not commercially viable. Yet. Give it four or five years, and I guarantee they'll want to start flogging PS2 Classics to a well installed PS3 user base. I'd stake my health on it.

And then there's the fact they are still selling PS2s.

Only until 2012. After that, Sony will want to be able to sell their PS2 catalog digitally. By then, the Emotion Engine emulation system they've patented ought to be ready to distribute.

It's not rubbish...

They wouldn't be dumping money into the R&D of software that accurately emulates the Emotion Engine on PS3 hardware if they "never ever" intend to do anything with it. Maybe they would have three years ago, but not in this economical climate. Sony spends quite a lot of time losing money on this console as it is. Why on Earth would they burn even more on something they're never going to implement?

The Taff
08-21-2009, 08:09 PM
Why on Earth would they burn even more on something they're never going to implement?

Assuming, of course, that Sony didn't already have their head completely up their ass this console generation.

Need I remind you that the original PS3 shipped with some limited backwards compatability. If they had already begun implimenting it, why strip it from the console in the first place? Because of poor hardware sales for the PS3. In order to keep some sor tof revenue, they continue to sell PS2s because of the sheer volume of titles ont he console, and the PS3 has such a near empty library at launch. Backwards compatability is a se tof training wheels to keep a new console upright when it launches. But the price of the PS3 at launch made it unappealing to buy without a superior library. Their decision was to continue to support the PS2 instead of price dropping the PS3.

The appeal of backwards compatability tends to have its prevelance at console launch, when the console's library is sparse. As a console's library grows, support for it will decrease until it atrophies off. Take the 360 for example. When the console launched, it had a growing list of backwards compatability games. As more quality games were realeased, the updated BC list got smaller and rarer. Now with a vast library, backwards compatability is nothing more than an after thought.

The PS3 abandoned its crutch too soon, and suffered for it early in its life cycle. But now that it's library has some quality titles in it, there is absolutely no reason for Sony to continue to support it. None. Nada. ESPECIALLY when they continue to sell and support the PS2. The Wii, on the otherhand, still needs its crutch of backwards compatability. While the Wii has a vast library, quality titles are rare.

When Sony says, "BC is done," I fully believe them. The console has enough quality games now to stand on its own, and it doesn't need BC to sell anymore.

Need I remind you that the original PS3 shipped with some limited backwards compatability.

It wasn't limited, it had the actual Emoton Engine chip built into it. If you bought a PS3 in the first nine months of availability (in the US) then it was essentially a PS2 and PS3 in one machine. It wasn't until they released the 40GB and 80GB models that they replaced the Chip with shitty software emulation.

Still supports my theory (Note, I said theory.)

Backwards compatability is a crutch to allow a new console to walk until it has a library that can support it on its own.

The Xbox 360 did it. Now they have a vast library that justifies the purchase of the console, and now they no longer support it because it's not needed.

The Wii is still doing it, as their library, while vast, has few quality games. It still needs its BC to walk with the core gamer audience. It seems that Nintendo didn't really learn their lesson from the Gamecube, as 3rd party support is still severly lacking compared to other consoles.

The PS3, while they tried BC at first, the $600 price tag still was causing it to sink. Even with BC, it just wasn't enough to justify a $600 dollar purchase. SO they continued to support the PS2 instead to keep some sort of revenue coming in. Now the PS3's library is capable of supporting the console, and with the price drop it's now more accessable to people with lower incomes. This combined with the fact they are supporting the PS2 until 2012 causes me to highly doubt BC will return to the PS3.

The 360 did a lousy job of it. Only half of my games are backwards compatible.
The poor X-box didn't have much of a chance, it was only out about 4 years before the 360 came, and Microsoft abandoned it immediately.

Why the wii is backwards compatible is beyond me. They NEVER did it until this generation. They're essentially outselling the 360 & PS3 combined, so they really don't have a need for it. It's still nice to have that option, though. I'll occasionally play my GC games on it; saves space & time. It is kind of a pain, since you still have to use a GC controller & memory card.

The news was reporting a drop in the video game market overall, and I read a story today that said the industry has fallen 29% in July from a year ago.

The latest price drops, coupled with some new killer apps will help the market. They're making the PS3 more attractive, but there really isn't anything compelling out there for any system. When I go home, I'll likely play Bioshock and Twilight Princess. I'll check Mario Galaxy out.

Now that the PS3 price has dropped, I'm ready to get one. I'm waiting to get the expanded version of Fallout 3 when it's rereleased in October. If nothing else, it'll kill time when I'm in California, and I can always give it to my nephew if I get tired of it.

In other news, a new firmware is coming, -- we're finally making our way to version 3.00 -- and it's going to have a significant affect on the XMB.

PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.00) Update (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/08/18/playstation-3-firmware-v3-00-update/)

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

“What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.

Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.

Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.

PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.

Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.

Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

I bought Uncharted and Ninja Gaiden. Uncharted reminds me a lot of tomb raider, except it has much prettier graphics, and isn't nearly as fun. :(

Uncharted was the first game I played on the PS3. From the direction to the art design to the acting and music, I adore every thing about it. Can't wait for Uncharted 2, it looks brilliant.

Oddly enough, I've never liked Tomb Raider. I used to own it on the PC and PSX, but hated playing it. Haven't much liked any of the sequels, either. Odd, that. :(

I'm in the same boat. I've never been a big fan of Tomb Raider. I know why, too. It's the Lara Croft charecter.

She just seems....Well....Evil! Most of her villains are just people trying to get the same treasures as her, and the majority of them are significantly less wealthy than she is. And then there's her love of killing animals like a poacher's version of Wonder Woman.

When you think of it, the perfect husband for her is Jason Voorhees! They've got so much in common, they both have an emberressing number of sequels that all follow the same damn formula, they both love to kill God's creatures in bulk, spend a shit ton of time underground, and neither of them will just fucking die!

I keep wonderig when I'm going to have to kill a dog...
At least Croft never killed a pack of baby seals. Hillary's head would explode. :D

New Firmware Update Causing Major Problems (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/PS3/Sony/PS3s_Reportedly_Not_Playing_Blu-ray_Discs_after_Firmware_Update/3517)

Forums and blogs across the internet are abuzz with reports that the newest PS3 update has broken the system, rendering the Blu-ray drive unusable.

The long awaited 3.0 firmware update for the Playstation 3 integrated a wide variety of improvements, such as upgraded friends lists, trophy sharing, and a bit more personalization. Unfortunately, it also appears to have caused some problems with the Blu-ray drive.

Customers are reporting that both games and Blu-ray discs will play fine for around ten minutes and then just freeze up. The increasingly common story is echoed by countless posters on the Playstation blog such as JohnnyAstro who says that he “upgraded to 3.01 3 days ago, and in the middle of playing a game a day later, the game locked up, and that was it. The drive cannot recognize any disc now. Tried putting in games, Blu-ray movies and DVD’s. Nothing.”

Reportedly, Sony customer service is stating that this is likely a coincidental hardware issue, and customers are being asked to pay $150 for repairs on their systems. While this issue does appear to be widespread, it definitely isn’t happening to every system. If you’re using your PS3 as a Blu-ray player though, it may be wise to avoid the update until this all gets straightened out.

I'm glad I don't update mine religiously.

Yep, I never updated mine to 3.1, which is great because I'm going to sell it soon to buy a new ps3 and I don't need it buggin out on me, lol.

I upgraded to 3.01 last week, but haven't had any issues. Silent Hill Homecoming locked up on me two nights ago after about 20 minutes of play, but that game is known for the occasional lock up. I reset the system and everything was fine, played for a couple of hours without a hitch. I've been playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion all day today without any problem (I have it on pause while I'm in here typing this), and I played Disgaea 3 for about three hours before that.

Course, having said that, I'll probably walk out to the living room and find my system locked up. :X

I didn't have any problems with the 3.0 firmware when it was released either, but I went ahead and upgraded to 3.01 because I own Uncharted, and apparently the 3.01 firmware was only released to fix an instability that 3.0 created with that game.

How is SH:Homecoming?

I'm debating on whether or not to pickup Oblivion. The only thing I didn't like about it when I had it on 360 was the strange leveling up system. I actually created a graph so I could get the most out of my level ups. When I blindly leveled up and received minute bonuses, I ended up getting my ass kicked by everything. It was a time consuming process.

Other than that, Oblivion is an amazing game; highly addicting and time-consuming.

Anxiously awaitng the new version of Fallout 3 (the only PS3 game I'm looking forward to play)... almost there.

They've started drip feeding the Fallout 3 expansions onto PSN, but I reckon I'll wait until I can afford the Game of the Year Edition. Save data from the regular edition can be used on the new one (same as with Oblivion) so I don't have to stop playing it just yet.

I've got the Game of the Year Edition of Oblivion, and I've only barely begun the Shivering Isles expansion. I'm just about done with the Knights of the Nine expansion, though. I've collected all of the relics, and am on my way back to the priory to plan the assault against Umaril the Unfeathered.

You're right about this game taking a mad amount of time. I'm almost 100 hours in, I'm level 33, and I've only done the first five story quests (the next one I need to do is The Path of Dawn). To put that in perspective for people who haven't played: the game only features 17 main storyline quests, and while I've only done the first five of those, I've already completed over 50 quests in total. This game has way more to do that doesn't involve the main storyline. It's absurd, really. And I agree, the leveling up system is odd, way less straight forward than that in Morrowind, but I've not had any trouble thus far. I haven't really had to chart out my progress.

Silent Hill Homecoming is a pretty good game. Better than Silent Hill 4, I reckon, but it requires some precision on the part of the player. If you're no good with the game's dodging system, it'll eat you alive. And I'm playing on normal. A single nurse can wipe you out pretty fast if you can't get the hang of dodging an enemy's attacks. The storyline has been pretty good, sort of twisted in a big way, and I'm enjoying it.

Anyway, I'm only taking a breather from Oblivion. Decided to let my PS3 rest. Once more into the fray.

My Sony has yet again suffered this Yellow light of death mailed back and they said if it happens again i get a new PS3.I wonder if these updates are causing the problem ?

I'm beginning to wonder if the issue is an incompatibility with older model PS3s. Mine is pretty new (manufactured in November '08) and I haven't had any problems with the 3.01 issue yet.

Well my new slim version was made June 2009, And my yellow light of death bulky model is the backwards compatible PS2 version.Maybe thats why its breaking down ? Sony probably wants to make double there money by us having to buy 2 different systems.

The backwards compatible models are just unreliable. I've got a friend who went through two of them a couple of months ago when he decided to buy a PS3. Both of them ended up being duffers, and finally he bit the bullet and bought a newer one. Hasn't has a problem sense.

They are known for taking their time with Grand Tourismo games. Not that much goes into PSP games, but a Playstation 3 version a hell of a lot will go into it. I remember how long it took for GT4 to come out back in the day.

Those games are never rushed and there is a reason for that.

I'm not big on the Gran Turismo series. I think it's pretty dull, but I've got a friend who really enjoys them and he's been waiting for Gran Turismo 5 for many years.

We downloaded the demo for the newest Need For Speed game the other day and were both startled and annoyed to see that they've turned the game into a Gran Turismo clone. Not cool.

I'm the same way. When it comes to racing games (or most games for that matter) I prefer more arcade style to realistic style, but the GT games are very good for people who enjoy realistic races.

I have this game called Baja: Edge of Control which is truck racing in desert settings. It is a really fun game to play.

I'll buy a PS3 when they make a new line of backwards compatible consoles.

Til then.. PS3 can fuck off.

I love my PS3. I own the Slim version myself. I own:

Tekken 6
The Incredible Hulk
Baja: The Edge of Sanity
Virtua Tennis '09
WWE: Legends of Wrestlemania

The next game I'm buying isn't going to be until March when Super Street Fighter IV comes out. I have it on pre-order at Gamestop. I'm glad the guy there told me about the Super version, because I came real close to buying Street Fighter IV used. Then when he told me about the Super one, I said, "fuck that, I'll just pre-order the better version and wait it out." I have five other games to have fun with anyway.

*sigh*

It's hard for me to discuss the merits of the PS3 when it literally takes me 20 minutes of installs and updates just to play one fucking game. There are certainly good things to be said for the PS3, but for me the bad outweighs these benefits very often for me.

I really don't have problems playing my games on a PS3, but the vast majority of the bullshit I associate with the console is dealing with the system itself. It's not nearly as user friendly as the other two consoles, and instead feels like a monsterous PC I plug into my television. That's an appeal for some, but for someone like me who actively quit PC gaming so I wouldn't have to deal with this unstreamlined baldedash, it's very off putting.

And then there's fucking Playstation Home, that vile scourge that shows wha happens when you let your marketing department make features. If you should find yourself in this application, here's what you do. Press the Playstation button in the center of your controller, whent he menu appears select quit. Hope I was of assistance.

Nate, I thought games came with an automatic update that installs itself before the game can ever be played? That's been my experience, and it only takes a few minutes.

I can vouch for Nate, I watched him install/update AC2 on our PS3, it took twenty minutes for him to get the game instaled/updated/whatever the system was doing at the time. As opposed to when we played it on the 360 which was 1) Pop in the game 2) Play the game

Interesting. The last game I played that required an update was Street Fighter 4. It automatically updated and didn't take much longer than a few minutes. Maybe it wasn't a major one. I usually update it myself with a flash drive, which does seem to take a bit longer, but never 20 minutes.
