View Full Version : Favorite Friday the 13th film

Here it is again. Surprised this wasn't done already.

It's quite hard for me to choose between the early ones, especially the first two, but I think Part 2 slightly gets it for my favorite. It has some of the best (maybe the best) characters in the series, great kills (like the wheelchair ride and the double impalement...even though the MPAA made them cut them down), a scary Jason, and my favorite musical score of the series. I think I'd order them like this from my favorite to my least favorite: 2, 4, 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 7, 9, FVJ, X.

I choose Friday the 13th (1980). It tells the best story, has the best location, has the best characters, has the best suspense, has the best collection of murder scenes, and utilizes great themes such as the psycho-connection between parent and child and the power of superstition and the urban legend has over people.

Also by the end of the film we realize the murderer is not a man in a mask or a supernatural creature, but a regular person like you and me. It makes you think that if Mrs. Voorhees can pull something like that off, then anyone can. It really evokes the feeling of not being able to trust anybody.

As I've said before, original horror films to me are usually the best and then I have a favorite sequel. My fav. sequel is part 2. Nothing compares to the original though.

My opinion alternates often, but it came down to a bare-knuckled fist fight between the original and part III. The original dominated. I always thought Mrs. Voorhees kicked the living shit out of Jason, both as an entity, and as a storyline. She is what separated Friday the 13th from Halloween, if you ask me. She added a monopolizing level of mystery to the film, and revenge is a plausible mean of killing.

Now that that's covered: III is my second favorite F13 flick for many a reason. It made horror film history by giving Jason his iconic hockey mask; (which while I love the sack and think it's often unfairly maligned, the hock beats it) I liked the character Chris and wanted her to live; Richard Brooker played Jason the best, in my opinion; plenty of memorable kills [eye shoot, eyes-at-the-screen, sliced right between the legs, etc.] And is it just me or is the movie more "green" than the other installments? It just seemed that the film had a very tonic green atmosphere. I enjoyed that.

I'm going to say that the first entry was pretty weak and differ from your opinion, Derek. To me, I like Jason Lives, but that's from my childhood. I've always just liked it for no good reason.

Now that I've gotten older, I find myself watching 2, 3, and 4 in the same sitting to get the effect of the whole arc. That's the best part about the series to me. I can sit there and the continuity is excellent and the movies by themselves are pretty stellar.

As a guilty pleasure, I watch A New Beginning. I saw it at the theater and was scared witless and thought that that Jason took the violence to a whole new level. He's what made it for me.

I love 2, 3, and 4... but Jason Lives is the most overrated installment by far, in my opinion, so our opinions clearly differ in that department, Mike. :D

A New Beginning is great. A little tame (no really great kills), but great.

Franchise
07-15-2007, 12:14 AM
Overrated? I don't think it really is. It's got a good fanbase, but it's also got a web of detractors. So, it's not one of those movies that everyone loves or everyone hates. I think it's more of a 50/50 thing. To me, it's good for the reason that most don't like it: I enjoy a smattering of humor on occassion and it's not over the top in this one.

mcilroga
07-15-2007, 12:23 AM
On the old Friday the 13th forum I saw it being held to the high heavens by some. In that aspect, I think it's overrated.

A) It introduced Zombie Jason by bringing him back in a bullshit method.

B) No nudity in a Friday the 13th flick? What the FUCK?

C) Tommy Jarvis wasn't all that bright in the film.

D) C.J. Graham just wasn't anything special as Jason.

E) It just didn't have that style of the first five films. It's hard to explain, it just didn't seem as low-budget and dark.

sCabbOy
07-15-2007, 12:34 AM
I think calling it 50/50 is overrated. It's more like 30/70.

But on the other forum wasn't the movie voted tops as favorite? That's overrated when it's about #4-7...

It was fun yes, but it wasn't a Friday The 13th. No Crystal Lake, pines? red mud? Jason looked silly... too much tongue in cheek humor. I dunno, it's not one I like to watch often. My 2 cents.

I went with the (not so) Final Chapter. After having my bi-annual all night Friday the 13th movie marathon last night, it still stands out as the one Friday that keeps me on my toes. The characters have adequate time for some development, Ted White pwns all as Jason (so what if he did it for the money? he still kicked ass!), the atmosphere was at it's very darkest, and it had the best death scenes in the saga. Tom Savini dipped into that magic bag of tricks of his and did not disappoint. And aside from the violence, the crazy wacky Crispin Glover, the epic opening sequence, and every other kick ass element of this film, the best things here were the fact that Jason was totally pissed off and bull rushed Trish out a window, and the fact that the entire film leads you to believe that Rob will be the killer of Jason, yet young Tommy Jarvis ends up being the one to dissect his brains with his own machete. What classic shit. 10/10.

I have always had a hard time picking between the original and The Final Chapter. But, I'll choose the original.

Here's my ranking of the series: 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, X.

1-5 is my definitive Friday the 13th series. Zombie Jason was unnecessary, but fun to watch for nostalgia of good ol' Jason.

I liked the series in this order:

My ranking is similar to yours Mel.

Final Chapter is at the very top. I believe it is the only film of the original four that can stand toe to toe with the original Halloween and NOES and give them a run for their money in terms of style and atmosphere. IMHO, of course. Nothing else I can say about this film that I haven't already, Jason was in top form and all the stars were aligned for the film to be the best.

Jason Lives is the only one of the latter films that can stand against H20 and the mega-beast combo known as Dream Warriors/Master (I didn't include New Nightmare because that film is in a class by itself.)

My ranking and comments:

The Final Chapter (See above)

Parts 1 & 2 (Essentially one long beautiful film)

Part 3 (A classic)

Jason Lives (Overrated? How about not rated enough. Great pre-Scream film)

The New Blood (Same formula, new badass Jason. Best Jason design since FC)

Jason goes to Hell (A great change of pace. Not as bad as fans say, but not as good as it could have been. The best technically made of the films.)

A New Beginning (A step way down from Final Chapter but I still have a place in my heart for it.)

Jason Takes Manhattan (Very sloppy film where Jason is concerned and the story is balls, but still does have great production values)

Jason X (I don't hate this film and I don't love it either. Sucky make up job, stale Kane Jason. The second most annoying set of characters in the series. The killing and some of Robo-Jason are the only good points here)

Freddy vs. Jason (Ranks better as an Elm Street film, but not much there either. The most annoying set of characters in the series and a terrible Jason gives this film the coveted "Dead Last" spot on the list. Robert Englund is the saving grace!)

Jason Lives is my favorite because its the first one ever watched, the only one I ever owned, so I watched it constantly. Plus I really get a kick out of how much Tommy does these really stupid fucking things but at least attempts to work his way out of them. Brought Jason back to life by accident? Go right to the cops! Cops dont believe you? Make a break for it! Jason ignoring you? Call him a fucking pussy! It's a riot.

Parts 1-4 are one, big movie to me. I don't watch any of those four without watching the other three along with it, and they always get watched in order.

Since picking all four wasn't an option, I picked the first movie since it started it all.

Although I must say, it warms my heart to see that the first four films have a total of 30 votes while the other films collectively only make up 14 votes, less than half of the first four films' votes. This is as of October 21, 2007, but it was neat to see that.

I love them all, but my votes goes to TFC for being the only one to give me any scares at all, even if it was just 3 "jumps" during the film's run. Jason looked great - masked and unmasked - and there was...no flaws to me.

I haven't seen all of JGTH and wasn't giving Pts 2 or 3 my full attention. This Friday I'm probably going to watch 2, 3 and 4 - with, if I get time, 6 and 7 - all over again though.

I voted for "Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter", as it's the only one that ever gave me the willies or chillies, and it had the best finale ever. The original, FvJ and JL were good runners-up. I ain't seen parts 2-3 in a looong-ass time though, so perhaps it's unfair to judge though. I know someone probably thinks I'm inhuman for liking FvJ, but it's in my book like 'Godzilla vs. Megalon' - the movie was pure cinematic shit in most ways, but it was still just so enjoyable that I can't call it a bad film.

PART 3-
This is the first Friday the 13th I ever saw. I was 8 years old, so it was...1993, maybe '94 if I had gotten to the next year. I don't remember the exact month. Interesting fact, Night Prowler was born the year that I started watching Friday the 13th, so that makes him like...my son.

Anyways, yea. My Mom was flipping through channels and I swear to you the first thing I saw was the shot of the creepy barn, and I just said "stop". She let me watch the whole thing and then made me promise it wouldn't fuck me up for life. I never told her that it changed my perspective forever. ;-)

My favorite of the series, just absolute awesomeness from beginning to end. Nothing will ever beat when Brooker just shoots Vera in the eye, drops the fucking spear gun and is just like, "Are there seriously anymore of these assholes?"

4/4 stars.

PART 6-
The second movie I watched in the series and I know it seems like I'm starting a trend here just because of significance to when I saw them but I assure you that's not it. Even now I will watch these two films and not feel any are above these. Although my next selection almost over takes Part 6.

This film is the perfect mix of horror and comedy. I really think they took it to a sweet level of showing that "Yes, we understand that Jason being re-animated as a Zombie is down right hilarious so we're going to make you laugh while we brutally slaughter people."

Tommy Jarvis is pretty annoying in this movie, but he chases probably the hottest heroine in all of the series so we'll let him slide. I almost wish they would have brought Tommy Jarvis back after wrapping a chain around his neck and sinking him to the lake was a lame, but appropriate ending I suppose. I'd rather watch them duel it out.

4/4

PART 1-
Being as how I didn't watch Friday the 13th in chronological order, I went into this one expecting Jason to be the killer. So when it came back that it was Mrs. Voorhees I felt like I was watching Part 5, which I had saw before even seeing the original. I was just relieved it wasn't some rando like Roy Burns, and actually had a relation to Jason.

But it is definitely a holy grail for horror. Very good character development, I'd say the most believable for any of the series. I felt Kevin Bacon could have developed a little more, for when that Machete went through his chest, I really didn't give a fuck. In fact, all the lowers characters pretty much got no sympathy from me. Except for Steve; someone should have fucked him.

4/4 stars

I'd suggest not adding the remake to the poll, cause it'd be unfair to it, considering all the people who already voted. If by chance it's now any of their favorite, they wouldn't be able to change their vote. So maybe the title should just be altered to specify the poll is for your favorite in the original series.

My order has also changed a bit, but now I think I'm pretty sure on this:
Part 2
The Final Chapter
Part 1
Part 3
A New Beginning
Jason Lives
Jason Takes Manhattan
The New Blood
Jason Goes to Hell

With the remake coming out since this poll was made, I don't think it should be added this late, but the title and poll title should be altered to ask what your favorite film in the *original* series is.

Also, only 90 votes almost two years later? Come on, I know there's more fans out there.

No disrespect, just a constructive criticism: You call Friday the 13th Part 5 "A NUDE Beginning" while the remake (which is a porno film featuring Jason) is in your top five?

Anyway, I guess we all have our own opinions, so I'll go ahead and list my list of favorites, and it will be YOUR turn to give ME crap. :)

I am kind of wierd. I would say for the rest of my life that THE BEST one is the original, but what I consider "the best" is not always "my personal favorite."

I think the remake was probably the fifth or even sixth best behind the first four or five originals.

What makes Friday the 13th unique is that the first four films really work together as one big fat movie. In a way they connect like the original Star Wars trilogy. It's like there was not a real sequel until Part 5, if that makes any kind of sense.

Halloween is defined by the original alone. Elm Street stands really high above any of it's sequels. The original Child's Play is the ONLY one that is really scary. Against popular opinion, the first Evil Dead is the superior horror film in that trilogy. The original Chainsaw is the ONLY canon Chainsaw film in my brain, despite enjoying the sequels. With Friday, it is the first four films collectively as one unit that work together as one big fat story line.

The remake was probably the best one since the first four, BUT it was a bunch of missed opportunities:

A. No classic score by Harry Manfredini and not nearly enough chchchhahaha
B. Not enough POV/Stalking sequences aside from maybe one shot
C. No, iconic unmasking scene at the end of the film where we really see the face
D. Mrs. Voorhees should have played a much larger role in the film
E. The alter to Mrs. V,'s head should have been a table and not a hole in the wall.

I think the thing I missed the most in it was a classic unmasking scene. That is one of the things I love about Parts 2-4 the most, and this film was supposed to be a remake of the first four, yet they missed THE most basic yet essential ingrediants that make Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th.

Voorheeszilla
12-26-2009, 02:06 AM
I don't think Mrs. Voorhees needed to have a larger role in the reboot, they wanted to keep it short and simple from the beginning, and they didn't intend to have Mrs. Voorhees be the killer because they didn't want to do a direct remake, so I think it works as is.

Steven Lloyd

I voted Part 3. That and Part 2 are extremely close in my mind, but Part 3 wins for having the best kills and the coolest Jason (as well as the freshest looking, this is the only time his clothes are clean and his mask is in one piece). I also love Chris Higgins! And the other thing I thought Part 3 did better than Parts 1 or 2 is that it takes place in someone's home, rather than a camp or training center. It would be much more chilling to know that your best friends are dead in your room, or your parents' room, or the in the bathroom you have used for years.

As for the other films...

2. Friday the 13th Part 2 - Best final girl, Ginny's Jedi-mind-skills fooling Jason, and the pillowcase mask!

3. The Final Chapter - Tommy Jarvis' first film, and by far the best climax! First the seemingly never ending chase, then Jason gets completely owned by a 12-year-old.

4. Jason Lives - A zombie Jason that is NOT slow as all Hell, a grown-up Tommy, and kids actually being at the camp for a change!

5. Friday the 13th 1980 - You gotta love Mrs. Voorhees!

6. A New Beginning - While the "mystery" plot sucks, I loved all the characters.

7. Freddy vs Jason - Sucky characters, but it has Freddy!!!

8. The New Blood - I like psychic people movies. But I hate the teens in this one.

9. Friday the 13th 2009 - Would be higher if it weren't for the absence of the Manfredini score. That and I hate the idea of remakes in general. But running Jason is back!

10. Jason Goes To Hell - Nice premise, not-so-great execution.

11. Jason X - What were they thinking?!

12. Jason Takes Manhattan - Oh dear, the budget is showing...

I've noticed on this board, and the old F13 board, that people are more willing to admit when they like an entry that everyone else hates. On any other film board, most people just go with the herd and pretend they didn't enjoy the unpopular film. You should see the amount of hate mail I've gotten on zombie boards for liking Romero's last three films (especially Land Of The Dead, I got a death threat! It was in jest, but still . . .). I've never experienced that on this board, or any other F13 board.

Kudos.

Fair enough.

I have to re-state my vote for "Final Chapter"- it is fantastic in so many ways. It really kept a lot of continuity from Part 3, and that helped the "next day" feel of it a great deal. Final chapter is so dark and full of dread through the entire thing, it really sets a mood that helps the kills, and makes Jason so ominous and dangerous, Ted White's portrayal (for me) is easily the best of the series. Every kill is fantastic, as Savini and his crew are at the top of their game.

Sure, there's some controversy (The gravestone with 1979 on it, Gordon's demise/escape), but Manfredini's score of the last reel is amazing, and we get to see ample nudity.

Final Chapter- for me, the definitive Friday flick.

People over react to the stupidest stuff these days. I'm often surprised by the amount of men who get all offended and angry over nude scenes, screaming bloody murder when any actress takes their clothes off. Hell, over at the Halloween site, they've been whining and crying for a year because Danielle Harris showed her boobs in Rob Zombie's Halloween. She one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen and seeing them was distinct pleasure.

If people don't relax soon there's going to be a serious run on ulcer medication ten years from now.

As for having trouble picking a favorite, sometimes I like the first movie better then the second, sometimes I like the second one better. I have weird mixed feeling about both Jason Goes To Hell and Jason X that have them looking different depending on my mood.

I got just through watching the remake. I've now watched the whole series in the past few days. Some I like better, some I like the same, some I like less.

Here are my new rankings:

1. Part VI (The tightest, most entertaining entry of the series.)

2. Jason Goes to Hell (I finally came around to this one.)

3. Friday the 13th (2009) (I'm actually a little embarrassed about how much I enjoyed this one, on this viewing. Considering some of the things people say about it. This is the most I've ever enjoyed the remake.

Up until the final chase, I was actually enjoying it a little more than 2,3,4,5, and 7. The final chases of those movies are pretty superior. There's better things in those movies for me, but the remake is just a little more overall entertaining. It kind of reminds of me Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. There's not a lot that sticks out about that movie to me, but it works way better than it should, just as pure entertainment. I can't really explain it.)

4. The New Blood

5. A New Beginning

6. Part 2

7. Part III

8. The Final Chapter

9. Jason Takes Manhattan

10. Freddy vs. Jason (The first 30 or so minutes are pretty good. Then I got bored and bored. Then it picked up with the fight at the end.)

11. Friday the 13th (I love the atmosphere, but it's just too dull.)

12. Jason X (One of the few movies I've seen with so much action, but is so boring.)

I had a couple ranked wrong. I had TFC ahead of Part III. I meant to have III ahead of it, so I changed it.

In my order my favorite fridays would be:

The Final Chapter- to me this is the ultimate f13th movie, brutal and vicious, and the ending just rocks!.

Jason Lives- I love the characters, especially sheriff garris, the guy is hilarious and badass..jason is just a pure killing machine, the ending is great, and i liked all the inside jokes.

Jason Goes To Hell- this movie gets soo much flack, and i do understand why, but I personally love the movie, its definitely the slickest looking of them all, and the brutality, the violence is just off the wall great. Sure, jason's not physically in the movie that long, and some of the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense but im here to be entertained and this movie entertains me everytime i watch it, the duke rules. My favorite scene, is the melting scene and the diner massacre.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Friday the 13th part 2

The New Blood

A New Beginning

Part 3- for some reason, I used to like this one alot, but over time, i feel that I get really bored watching it, and without the 3D, some of the effects look stupid, the 3D with the deluxe edition sucks, and hurts your eyes..

Freddy Vs Jason - Feels more of a elm street movie then a jason movie, they made jason a pansy IMO.

Friday the 13th (2009)- Im starting to like it a little more now that Ive watched it a few more times, however, the thing this movie is missing is the camp feel of the first one, which i personally think is a big element to the original, its just a bunch of WB cast jocks up at some big lake house. I did like Derek Mears performance though, and the opening half is great.

Jason takes Manhattan

Jason X - Horrible, but i still watch it from time to time, some great kills.

Jason X is the unbearable film in the series for me.

With this question, my answer fluctuates between parts two, three, four, & twelve, mostly because those films featured the more humanistic Jason. Zombie Jason had a nice stint, & it was nice to have him around, but human Jason has always been far, far more interesting.

I'd say

Friday the 13th (1980)
Part 2
Part 3
Final Chapter
New Blood
Jason Lives
Jason Take Manhattan
Freddy VS Jason
A New Beginning
Jason X
Jason Goes to Hell - didn't like the story, too many plot holes.
Friday the 13th (2009) - missing the summer camp elements, annoying modern day teenagers.

I think Part 3 & 4 are now tied as being my favorites. I recently watched them with my girlfriend (giving her a crash course in the series) and I realized just how enjoyable a double feature they make.

My top 2 are The Final Chapter and Jason Goes To Hell. All other entries fluctuate depending on the year!

Here's my ranking.

The Final Chapter (viscious, unrelenting, peppered with just the right amounts of comedic moments, suspense, sex, blood, etc, ending with the best 'dispatching' of Jason the series has seen, in my opinion.)
2 (a slightly faster paced retread of the original, but I liked alot of the characters-especially Ginny-and most of the deaths were great.)
3 (featuring a couple of pretty developed characters (Shelley being a favorite of mine) and some well-timed false scares and 3D gags (I did NOT like Rick's eyeball pop though), and the intro of Jason's mask.)
Friday The 13th (1980) (Betsy Palmer as Mrs Voorhees used to terrify me as a kid. The deaths and setpieces were innovative and at times near-perfect (axe to the face and arrow through the neck, anyone?)
Friday The 13th (2009) (The worst thing about this film were some of its characters. Thankfully the three main protagonists, deaths, final act, and the general atmosphere made up for them)
Jason Lives (really entertaining but it was lacking in the gore-factor and had a little too much humor for my liking)
The New Blood (While it could have been orchestrated better, Tina's telekinetic abilities brought something new to the series)
Freddy Vs Jason (The final confrontation wasn't what I hoped it would be and the character of Lori got on my nerves but Jason's kills made up for that, especially in the cornfield)
A New Beginning (the fact that the killer wasn't Jason is one of the only things stopping this from being between JL and TNB)
Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (I mainly like this one for the brutality of some of the kills)
Jason X (a few rather creative deaths but poor CGI in some places and the overall atmosphere didn't match the other entries at all)
Jason Takes Manhattan (the intro was somewhat weak, the ship had some okay moments/deaths, the last 40 minutes was predictable and the way Jason 'died' wasn't great. At all.)

1. IV: The Final Chapter- This is the difinitive Friday the 13th.
2. Friday the 13th- best atmoshphere, and Tom Savini(I'm a big, big fan).
3. Friday the 13th IIID- One day before I die, I will see this film on the big screen, in true stereoscopic 3D.
4. II- Very well made film, excellent characters, great style. Reminds me of another one of my favorite horror films, The Town That Dreaded Sundown.
5. V: A New Beginning- This film is just hilarious to me in how over the top it was. Funny in a Total Recall kind of way.
6. VII: The New Blood- I actually like the story, and the end battle(not so much the ending though), and Jason looked his best.
7. 2009- Sure it could have been better, but I actually liked it. Especially the first 30 minutes. I liked the realistic tone of the film. Characters/story could have been much, much better. Too bad. I do wan't to see a sequel, or 2(or 3, or 4) spun off of this film, with some actuall running story connection.
8. VI: Jason Lives- This film was my introduction to Jason at the age of 6. Still holds a special place in my heart. I love the classic, gothic "Monster" feel of the film, but as far as the rest of the series, it just doesn't measure up. Not enough tits, not enough gore, too much humor.
9. IX: Jason Goes To Hell- Retarded story(why the hell does he eat the heart for crying out loud can someone explain that to me after 18 years, I still don't understand), but otherwise, a pretty entertaining horror film, with a Jason cameo at the beggining, and end.
10. Freddy vs Jason- This was actually a really good time in the theater that I went to. There were a bunch of vocal diehards, and the crowd was evenly split. It was like watching a live boxing match, or MMA fight. It was fun. This is one of those movies that doesn't translate well to home video. It was meant to be seen in a rowdy theater full of Freddy, and Jason fans cheering for their monster to pull through.
11. Jason Takes Manhattan- Kane Hodder saves this terrible film from being completely unwatchable.
12. Jason X- Garbage, but Ironically the worst film in the series has my personal favorite kill. The frozen face smash. Hodder was good in this one too.

I've gone back and forth on my favourite Friday film for years. Even now, I sometimes enjoy watching one more than the other for a while and then another entry becomes my new favourite. But at this moment in time I've settled on Part III as my favourite. I've seen it in 3D and it's such a fun ride. Creative kills and fun characters. Richard Brooker is my favourite Jason, the guy genuinely creeped me out in that film. I think it's that scene with him unmasked clawing at the window that put him over the edge.

I do think Friday 2 had the best heroine. Ginny was resourceful, strong and intelligent, plus it's pretty obvious she wasn't a virgin so she kind of went against slasher film tradition at the time.

The first film always has a place in my heart though. First horror movie I ever saw when I was about five years old. My parents let me watch it after I begged them to see it and I'll never forget sitting there watching it with my Dad. I remember being thrilled and amazed at seeing that arrow come up through Kevin Bacon's neck while my father just looked horrified!

With Part 3 my favorite screen shot of the film is when Jason stands over the top of the barn with the machete in hand and turn his entire body slowly while looking around. Awesome image!
