I was a bit disappointed in the 80s Encore setlist actually, a bit too poppy for my tastes. Ok, way too poppy actually.

I'm looking forward to the 80's Encore game. I need something new to play since i'm getting tired of playing all the other songs on Guitar Hero 1 and 2.

I can't wait for GHIII this fall. I'll either pick it up for the PS3 or the 360, I'm not sure which one yet.

CanadianFonzie
07-16-2007, 03:49 PM
I don't find the 80's edition to be too poppy, Balls to the Wall, Metal Health, 18 and Lie, etc etc etc but yes it does have quite a bit of pop...but hey, that WAS the 80's

zach82
07-17-2007, 01:43 PM
True. I know I'll still be getting it; I just think the setlist is much weaker than those of GH and GHII.

CanadianFonzie
07-17-2007, 05:35 PM
what disapoints me is that they don't have any songs that you can buy, and like I said in the other forum, they ordered the songs so stupidly, usually they start the game with easy songs, on this 80's version the only easy song for the first group is the Go-Go's song while they have other easy songs such as Heat of the Moment and Shakin' and Lonely is the Night scattered at other places on the list

Are any of the downloadable song packs any good?

girlychaos

I don't have them, but I played GHII on the 360 and it's really cool!

I play I and II on PS2 and I love it too! :D

Does anyone know why there's extra song in the 360 version though?

The Dream Master
07-19-2007, 10:28 PM
The extra songs are probably there as an incentive for anyone who's already bought the game on the PS2. It's only like five new songs though, I think, which certainly isn't enough to make me by it again.

Gringo Loco
07-19-2007, 10:30 PM
I thought the songs on Xbox Live were from GH 1?

The Dream Master
07-19-2007, 10:36 PM
Gringo, there are actually new songs on the disc itself. I know at least one of them was a song that was recorded after GH1 was released, so I don't think they're from the first game.

Gringo Loco
07-19-2007, 10:38 PM
Wow, I didn't know that. I'm getting a 360 next month but I dunno whether to keep it or sell it on ebay. (I'm getting it for $40) If I keep it, I can buy GHII and GHIII and skip the PS3 GHIII. Choices, choices.

One cool thing about this is that I can use the guitar for ROCK BAND, so I'm relieved I wont have to spend more money on that game plus it's instruments if it ends up having a better song list.

Gringo Loco

I didn't know the guitars are interchangeable. That sounds good. One more reason to buy the 360 version of GHII.

From wiki:
Harmonix has confirmed Guitar Hero guitar controllers will be compatible with the game.[8] The company has also said that Rock Band will also support the use of additional third-party controllers, and, should Activision (the current publishers of Guitar Hero) request it, they can make the Rock Band guitar controller work with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

All this was apparently taken from this news story:

CanadianFonzie

I understand that The Trooper was on the X-Box 360 version. I would love to play that song. Other than that I'll just stick with the PS2 version.

80s edition seems like just a rent or something though.

What is the deal with this Rock Band game? Anybody have any info?

CanadianFonzie
07-21-2007, 03:44 AM
well I know it's guitar hero with added drums and singing, I saw the sample of Welcome to the Jungle, looks amazing, my friend shall be getting it for my pleasure, lol

Lance Lives
07-21-2007, 04:31 AM
So there is there gonna be a drum kit controller? That seems like it would be really expensive. That's funny though, our friend who is in a band and plays drums could never get good at Guitar Hero and we always said they should make Drumhero and we'd have to watch out.

The Dream Master
07-21-2007, 07:51 AM
Harmonix claims that if one were able to master the drums on the hard setting for Rock Band, then they'd actually be able to play the instrument for real. Sounds cool.

ROCK BAND is getting ALOT of positive buzz and I'm slowly getting excited for it. Plus, for all intents and purposes, it'll be the real guitar hero 3, but we shall see.

I may just get both games, but all the talk about ROCK BAND's DLC (including the ability to download whole albums or selected tracks off them) are really enticing.

Gringo Loco
07-22-2007, 06:19 PM
Yep, I'm still torn between GHIII and Rock Band. Can you play Rock Band with just the guitar or drums?

The Dream Master
07-23-2007, 01:43 AM
Gringo, yep, you can. The CPU takes over the other instruments if you just want to play one.

I really hope that the accessories are sold separately from the game. That way you can just buy whatever you feel like playing with.

Gringo Loco
07-23-2007, 01:46 AM
I think the instruments are sold seperately. I read a leaked memo about the prices of each item. I think the memo was legit but I'm not 100% sure.

Yep! Somehow the game will be able to recognize that you're singing the right words. Not sure if it takes in how well you actually sing those words, but it would work in my favor if it didn't.

Sketch Sanchez
07-23-2007, 07:07 AM
It's like Kareoke revolution, guitar hero and drum mania all rolled into one.

Each instrument has it's own sinlge player campaign, and you can go online and play "band" with other people if you only have one instrument. I'll prolly just get the bass and keep the guitar hero controller.

GH3 has welcome to the jungle, so thats a plus. LOL Also alot more master recordings, but ROck band will have that too. GH will also have boss battles which is...wierd.
Rock Band will have weekly DLC, thats a huge plus. Man if they give us a sublime album? or 311? I'd be in heaven.

I know this is the GH thread, but I thought I would post this bit of news about Rock Band.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/807/807396p1.html

July 23, 2007 - Ever since Harmonix announced Rock Band, speculation has run rampant as to how much the game and instruments would cost. Retailers such as GameStop and Amazon have begun taking pre-orders for the band simulator, and they list SKUs for a bundle as well as each instrument sold separately. If the bundle price of $199.99 is accurate it will be right in line with what most of us were expecting.

The standalone game disc is listed for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as $59.99. The drums are going for $80 and the microphone for $30. Strangely, the 360 version of the wireless guitar is listed as $80, while the PS3 guitar is $60.

GameStop says Rock Band will be released November 20. Of course, retailers often list preliminary price and release dates for games in order to begin taking pre-orders, and we'll have to wait for the official announcement from Electronic Arts to know the final information. But it's looking likely that Rock Band will set us back two Benjamins.

The Dream Master
07-24-2007, 10:30 PM
Looks like I'm going to be buying the stand-alone disc and the guitar for the PS3. My brother wants the drums, but I think he'll be paying for it.

Gringo Loco
07-24-2007, 10:32 PM
Looks like I will do the same. Although you could just tell him to pitch in when you buy the bundle and get the mic for free. I would do that.

I picked up my copy of Guitar Hero Rocks the 80's early this afternoon. I've been playing it all day. :)

Playing Anthrax's Caught in a Mosh on Expert Mode is a bitch, lol. Wrathchild by Iron Maiden is really fun to play as well.

I was SLIGHTLY disappointed by the fact that there aren't any bonus tracks you can buy in the game. Other than that, I think it's great.

Can't wait for Guitar Hero 3! :D

CanadianFonzie
07-25-2007, 03:54 AM
the game kind of disappoints me because of the lack of effort I feel was put into it, I can't explain it in a nutshell, just they switch around parts of so many songs, don't get me wrong, I love the game

IUt cant be as bad as the singer for "killing in the name of" not only is he horrible, but since therees no cursing the song sounds fucking stupid. The singer for Incubus' "stellar" is poor as well, and its a shame because alot of the covers sound VERY close to the master versions, it's near uncanny sometimes how close their covers are, but not on those songs.

Lance Lives
07-26-2007, 03:11 AM
Danzig's Mother and Lamb of God's Laid to Waste are the worst in my opinion. Probably just because they are the songs I know the most. Primus' John the Fisherman is the best because it's actually Les singing.

Gringo Loco

Here's a songlist of the tracks from GHIII. I don't think this list is complete so keep your eyes out for more tracks.

"Suck My Kiss" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
"La Grange" made famous by ZZ Top
"Number Of The Beast" by Iron Maiden
"Through The Fire And Flames" by DragonForce
"Paint It Black" (by The Rolling Stones)
"Cherub Rock" (by Smashing Pumpkins)
"Sabotage" (by Beastie Boys)
"The Metal" (by Tenacious D)
"My Name is Jonas" (by Weezer)
"Knights of Cydonia" (by Muse)
"Rock And Roll All Nite" (as made famous by Kiss)
"School's Out" (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
"Slow Ride" (as made famous by Foghat)
"Cult of Personality" (by Living Colour)
"Barracuda" (as made famous by Heart)

Notice some of them say by "Insert band name here" and some say made famous by. There will be original tracks on GHIII. I dunno if there were any on previous games.

I was planning on buying Rock Band, but now I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I like alot of those songs.

CanadianFonzie
07-27-2007, 04:31 AM
YES La Grange, Number of the Beast, just amazing

on the 80's version, there are 2 songs that I actually need to use star power, they are Because It's Midnight (which is kinda stupid because the solo is actually quite obviously a keyboard solo) and Electric Eye...I need to use stao power on Play With Me, but now I don't have to:D

The Extreme song was a bitch.....that took me a few tries. It was the solo that gave me the problem.

Oh yeah...Because it's Midnight was a pain in the ass. That was a crazy keyboard solo. Electric Eye is tough too.

I'd still say my favorite song to play is Anthrax's Caught in a Mosh. I can actually play the verse riff with all down strokes( that's how i'd play it on guitar). :)

I played GH Encore Rock the 80's all afternoon....yay!! I thought most of the songs were easier and I liked the whole 80's vibe....but I didn't like that there were no extra outfits for the characters and the band didn't actually wear 80's clothes...just the character we play with...that was kind of boring.

I did love it anyway though. :)

Gringo - Yeah, people have uploaded a TON of those Custom vids on Youtube. :) Someone posted Master of Puppets too. I've seen some Dragonforce ones as well.

I think the process of making your own custom songs is pretty lengthy. I know you have to have a modded PS2. I think you have to download something from the internet too.....and you actually have to "create" the notes, I guess. I personally don't think that it's worth doing.

I STILL can't get over that singer they have on Dio's Holy Diver. I seriously cringe everytime I hear the insanely noticeable pitch problems at the end.

I got the Best Buy catalog today, and for this one, they have a TON of different guitar controllers to choose from. They have a Les Paul shaped ones now, and a strat shaped one.

I felt the controls were just the same as Guitar Hero 2 on PS2.

As far as the songs go, here's a list at wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_in_Guitar_Hero_III:_Legends_of_Rock

lol I found out yesterday that they made the guitar version of The Devil Went Down to Georgie, and to me, whats so funny about that is that this past week I heard the song and thought to myself "they should make a guitar version of this for Guitar Hero 3" and look what htey went and did, lol!, and I also really like how they took the concept of the song and used it in the game (a fiddle duel between Johnny and the devil)

Yeah, they have different Les Paul shaped guitars with different skins. If i'm not mistaken, those are only available for the PS3 and the 360. I know the PS2 has a Strat shaped one now. Other than that, it's the same SG shape. :( I wish they had the Explorer controller for the PS2. I love that guitar! :)

I hear there are "Boss Battles" in this. How exactly are they? Is it basically just like in Face Off Mode, but against the computer?

I went to the Best Buy today, and they didn't have it set up on the TV. :( I was hoping to try it out a bit.

Gringo Loco
10-30-2007, 06:05 AM
The boss battles, with the exception of the final boss battle, start off with just some note playing, not really much of songs and then progress into a song battle. Instead of star power you get battle power (or w/e it's called, I don't remember) and when you hit a note with a battle icon, you can screw up the boss by using battle power. He can do the same to you and there is one nasty battle power where it turns the buttons backwards. In other words, green is on the far right of the screen followed by red to the left of green and so on.

What pissed me off in GH II is that medium was so easy it was pitiful and hard was so hard that it took way too much practice to master the songs. I wish they'd have made a happy medium between, err... medium and hard.

My uncle got GHIII as a gift to my dad and I played it for a while (with Drop) tonight.

I hate to say it but I'm kinda disappointed! The songs are okay, but I think they tried too hard to make it better, when all that needed to be better was the singing, and that was already accomplished since it's not "covers" anymore. I'm gonna play it again tomorrow, and maybe I'll change my mind...but dunno. I'd pick GHII over this one just like that. I hope it was just a bad first impression though, cause I've been looking forward to it for so long. :(

I broke down and bought this game yesterday, unfortunately I had to pluck down full price and get a guitar with it since I stupidly sold GH2 with the guitar because I really needed the money. (grr)

I like the game but is anyone else like me and like part 2 better? I think its the song list, I really enjoyed part 2s music alot more than this one (despite welcome to the jungle being there) and the boss battles are a pain in my ass. I laso think the note placement was much better in the previous game. Casein poiunt would be the Rage against the machine songs that are in both games, while one is a cover the note place ment for the solo was as good as it can be for something so unorthodox, on this one (even though I like the song better and its a master recording) I feel the solo is completely terrible and doesnt even try to match the song.

Maybe I'm just crazy lol

I finally got a chance to play Guitar Hero 3 for PS3. My brother recently bought it, and I played it at his apartment. IMO, 3 has the best track list. I loved playing Metallica's One, Slayer's Raining Blood, Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast, and Dragonforce's Through the Fire and Flames.

I think this one is the hardest too. I was having trouble with some songs on Hard Mode. On the other ones, I can play on Hard with ease. Plus, there was still some lag on there. :( I kept trying to fix it, but I couldn't seem to completely get rid of it. Luckily I won't have that problem when I get it for PS2.

You can do hammer-ons and pull-offs in the original GH, but they're MUCH harder to do. :( I actually recently played it, and found it to be difficult in some spots. Say you have to do a hammer on from the green to the red...you have to leave your finger on the green button and then press the red while still holding the green.

GH 3 is probably the hardest. Medium Mode in 3 is like playing Hard Mode in 1,2, and the 80's Edition.

Lance Lives
12-01-2007, 04:35 AM
I really didn't have any trouble with 3 until I got to the last section, playing on Hard that is. Raining Blood gave me some trouble for a while and then I had a bout or two with One but I beat all of 'em except the battle with Lou.

well I've said this before, but the first time I ever played Guitar Hero, about a year and a half ago, I played More Than a Feeling and Iron Man on expert and beat them...mind you I also tried You've Got Another Thing Comin' and Bark At the Moon and couldn't pass those at the time, but my point is I was kind of gifted from the start of the game...I always assumed it was because of my 30+ years of playing actual guitar

I just picked up GHIII and I noticed how much better the hammer ons/pull offs were immediately. The control response just seems smoother in general. Pretty decent song selection too, and the battles were a big plus, this was definetly a good installment for the series. The last set list is hard too... probably the most challenging of anything they've done yet.

I learned how to play "Number of the Beast" for real faster than it's taken me to finish it in the game. Kinda funny how Slash and Morello talk about that in the interviews too.

girlychaos
12-03-2007, 03:52 AM
GH 3 is probably the hardest. Medium Mode in 3 is like playing Hard Mode in 1,2, and the 80's Edition.

zach82
12-03-2007, 04:32 AM
I agree, GH I was by far the easiest, the only really challenging songs on it were Bark at the Moon and Cowboys From Hell, even on expert. GH II's Hard mode was much more difficult than expert in I, and now III's Hard mode is about as difficult as Expert in II.

MaDMaNMaRz
12-03-2007, 05:00 AM
The original GH is easy, but doing hammer ons and pull offs are much harder, so I usually have to strum the notes. Other than that, the songs are pretty easy IMO.

I like the Les Paul controller, but I find it difficult to use when sitting down. It's like trying to play an actual V shaped guitar sitting down, lol. I find the SG controller to be more comfortable to use. I think I saw that there was a Strat shaped one too. But I haven't seen it in stores yet.

I sometimes do hammer-ons to show off to myself, like on The Devil Went Down to Georgia during that middle part before the second solo starts...but on average I pick 'em...it's funny how hard Bark At the Moon used to be, yet now playing it it is so easy cause I'm so much more skilled...plus if they had that on GHIII, with all the advancements, it would be equivelant to maybe Hangar 18 on GHII...which is funny, lol

Thunderhorse jams, bro. I actually prefer the GH version over the one on the Dethklok CD, to be honest. It sounds a LITTLE different on the CD. Guitar Hero III is harder than Rock Band even on Easy. However, I'm getting better. I reckon I'll play through the whole of easy, then go through medium, et cetera. Given that this is only my third time having ever played the game, I think I'm doing alright. :)

Oh, on Rock Band, Adam has downloaded a bunch of songs. One of them is a Metallica song that listed with a group of songs called "Impossible". What Metallica songs do they have for download Jeans? I was wondering how long it would be before this became the Rock Band thread too. I want that game so bad, just to play the drums, that looks the funnest. I don't think I'm gonna be doing too much singing. I'm just wary to get it when I actually get the money because I hear it's having a lot of problems with the guitar controller and there's question of how well the drums will hold up. I personally think it sucks that there is some of the same songs on Rock Band as there are on III.

Having only played Rock Band once, I got the feeling that it was a lot easier than the Guitar Hero series. I almost got a 100% rating on the first song I played on Rock Band (on medium).

In general, Rock Band is a lot easier than Guitar Hero III. I just tried doing some songs on medium on Guitar Hero III, and there's no way. They'll eat me alive. Too many blue buttons showing up too fast, and I have yet to acclimate my pinky to playing.

Rock Band, on the other hand, I tend to have a fighting chance. Although the songs listed under Impossible are brutal. I tried playing that Metallica song on Medium, and I got flat out pwned before the lyrics even started.

What Metallica songs do they have for download Jeans?

I couldn't tell you without looking. Next time I boot it up, I'll write them down.

I want that game so bad, just to play the drums, that looks the funnest.

They're a lot harder than they look. I used to drum as a hobby, and even I was having trouble with them. They sit at an awkward height, and the pads are arranged in a fashion that throws me off kilter. I can hardly keep up with the drum track on Easy. It'll take me a lot of practice for those, I think.

I'm just wary to get it when I actually get the money because I hear it's having a lot of problems with the guitar controller...

Apparently, it's a defect EA is addressing. If your controller ends up bunk, they'll replace/repair it for free. But they're also supposed to be dealing with the design flaw so that not a lot of other people will get them (it has to do with a loose screw on the strum bar, and it's a problem Adam's guitar is already having, which is why I switched over to Guitar Hero III).

I personally think it sucks that there is some of the same songs on Rock Band as there are on III.

I was talking to Adam after I made that post, and he said that there are only six songs from Guitar Hero III on Rock Band, and he thinks a couple of them were downloadable for Rock Band rather than on the disc.

You can also play and sing at the same time which I do, its fun and challenging. My faves to do that with a (Dont fear)the reaper and My SHarona.

I thought about trying that, but the only microphone we've got is one you have to hold. If I had a mic stand or a headset mic, I'd give it a go.

Yeah, that takes a bit of practice. I'm pretty good at the medium setting on GH, but I don't know that I'll ever get to go any higher simply because I don't play it on a regular basis. Well, that and I suck when that orange button comes into play. :misery:

I'm glad that Guitar Hero 3 is as hard as it is, because it gives you something to strive for. If you've been playing since the first one, you don't want each one you buy to be as easy as the last or you'll end up with no replay value. If I had to guess, if they make a Rock Band 2 I'd say it'll be considerably harder than what you guys are saying the first one is.

I don't find Guitar Hero 3 to be hard compared to when I play the previous Guitar Hero games now...because of the advancements that I'm so used to, I really can't play the first 2 Guitar Hero games very good any more

The notes for guitar on Rock Band actually stand out a lot better than in Guitar Hero III. The background they're on is also sort of translucent, so I don't end up getting dizzy after sitting and playing five or six songs in a row.

I don't even know what that means, Fonize. you're going to have to explain it to me.

If you mean how do you know when notes will fill up your "power up" bar, the notes are white rather than the color of the button that needs to be compressed. Hit all the white notes consecutively, and they power you up.

The game also provides you with a serious of distortions, so when you lift the guitar up and it starts draining your power, you can change how the guitar sounds.

I know what he means Jeans.

The hammer-on and notes are smaller than the regular notes, thats how you can tell. Basically:

[=====] Reg note
[===] hammer on or pull off

I think they're easier. To be perfectly honest, I couldnt tell when I could do it from the notes in GH-I didnt even think it was possible. I always figured that when it wouldnt come out that I was just doing it wrong or I had just fucked up. I never knew there were differences in the notes for GH, but with Rock Band it was obvious from the get go some notes were smaller

Sketch Sanchez

I'll try, but go to the freakin hard tutorial in ROck Band, they explain it really well.

imagine this is the rock band screen and you'll sometimes see something like this:

[==]
[====]
[====]
[====]

THat little one is an indication to do a hammer on, which basically means you can play the note without actually strumming the guitar. So lets say theres three green notes and then one little yellow note. THat means you strum three times on green, then you just press yellow with your finger and it'll play the note without strumming.
ADDED:
Oh and I love that we get new songs every week. I just bought Buddy Holly by Weezer, I'm marking out.
ADDED:
Oh and def try the tutorials, learning hammer-ons and picking" makes everything so much easier. I got my best friend into these games after he did nothing but talk shit about them-i made him play the tutorials and he's already better at the game. Even if you cant pull off the tricks, just knowing about them helps.

Activision says "Fuck you Rock Band players, you're not using our guitars." (http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=mastercontrol&id=13029)

Rock Band hit a major snag when it was released for the PS3. The major selling point of the game, the 4-player band mode, was not playable... unless you knew someone else who bought the 170 buck bundle. See, the set only comes with one guitar, one drum set and one mic. The game's developer (Harmonix, the guys who made Guitar Hero 1 and 2 before jumping ship to EA and Rock Band) realized that most everyone in the free world owns a Guitar Hero guitar to play with, and would just be able to use one of those for the other guitarist in the band. It was smart, and kept the price down on the box set.

The Xbox 360 version worked perfectly (unless your instruments broke) but the PS3 has a huge flaw. Seems that even though it was promised to gamers before, the PS3 Guitar Hero 3 guitar wasn't compatible with the game.

This left a problem for most people who had sunk money into Guitar Hero for the system, as they now had no way to play with a full band. That's right, there are no other guitars available to purchase separately for Rock Band, so gamers were assed out when it came to playing with a 4-piece.

Sony and Harmonix got quick to work making a patch to make the guitar compatible, and it was just about to be released to gamers when Guitar Hero's publisher (Activision) stepped in and complained, effectively blocking it from being released.

Over the last couple of weeks press releases have been flying back and forth from both camps, each blaming the other side, but one thing was obvious- Activision wasn't about to let their competitor use their guitars. Unless they paid up.

It was hinted at that money was the problem but never outright said, but that all changed today with an article from The Boston Globe.

"Unfortunately for Rock Band users, Harmonix has been unwilling to discuss an agreement that will allow us to provide that option in a manner that maintains the high standards people have come to expect from Activision," [Activision spokeswoman Maryanne] Lataif said. "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology,"

Know what? Fuck you. You're disillusioning your customers and outright fucking them over. You know there's room for both games to compete here, and you're being assholes about it. I won't even harp on the fact that if weren't for Harmonix, Activision wouldn't even have a hit series on their hands. But then again maybe that's what it is... some latent jealousy.

Look, I know it isn't something they have to allow. It's isn't going to help them, especially since their product is inferior to the other game. But it's no money out of their pocket.. the patch is done and could be implemented immediately. And if anything, it allows people to buy more guitars from them, especially since the Rock Band guitars have been acting up and most people prefer the old clicky feeling (I sure do).

This is nothing more than pure money hungry bullshit, and I'd suggest to anyone considering picking up Guitar Hero 3 for the PS3 to reconsider it. All the people that I know who bought the game for PS3 did so only in anticipation of using it for Rock Band when it came out. They wouldn't have sunk a hundred fucking dollars (the prices for these have gotten out of control, but that's for another rant) for it when they could've simply bought the disc for the PS2 for 50 bucks.

It's a scummy thing, through and through, and I hope enough customers complain to them to break them down.

The above nonsense is the reason Adam and I can't play Rock Band with both a bass guitar and a regular guitar at the same time -- the Guitar Hero III guitar was supposed to be compatible with Rock Band, and is on the 360, but we of the PS3 variety got fucked.

zach82
12-22-2007, 09:32 PM
Man, that is sucky... especially since the GH series guitars aren't cheap anyway.

Hopefully they come out with independent instruments for Rock Band soon to help remedy the problem since the people at Activision are being asses about letting out a patch to fix it.

I also think it's cool that they have a Co-Op Career Mode.
