View Full Version : What comic/manga do you want to see adapted into a film?

With big budget versions of The Incredible Hulk and Dragon Ball just over the horizon, I've been thinking a lot lately about what comic books and mangas I'd like to see adapted for the big screen.
From the comic book side of things, I'd like to see The Huntress. She's always been my favorite DC character, but I figure that, because she's only got a niche following, and because all of the solo female superhero films that we've gotten thus far have sucked (Elektra, Catwoman), it's not bound to happen any time soon. I'd settle for a Birds of Prey film, which I suppose might be possible if Justice League does really well.
On the manga end, I would kill to see Ranma 1/2 adapted into a big-budget film. The manga is quirky and fun, but it's also action packed enough that it could draw in the younger audience. Of course it does deal with subject matter that would be considered extremely bonkers by an American audience -- the lead character swaps gender when splashed with cold or warm water, and has a habit of shamelessly flaunting his female body because he simply has no modesty -- but I still think that with the right kind of production team, it would be an excellent film.
I also wouldn't mind seeing a Trigun film, which I think is far more likely than Ranma 1/2. If Dragon Ball does well, I expect Trigun will likely be the next property ported to an American cinema... although given the weak reception that met Joss Whedon's Serenity, the futuristic space cowboy thing might not be too appealing to studios (I reckon it gets in the way of a Cowboy Bebop film as well).
I know it'll never happen, but I think Azumanga Daioh would be a cute live-action film. Mind you, it'd have to be a highly stylized film to retain the quirky cuteness of the source material, but I think we need more highly stylized films these days. Sin City and 300 have set a precedent that I hope can be followed up on.
So, which comics/mangas do you want to see adapted?

I think Hellsing is a good choice. I'm still waiting for the new Hellsing OVA to come out in America (come on Pioneer, pick up the friggin' pace!) but I think, with the right production team, it could blow crap like Van Helsing out of the water.

comic I'd like to see either Hawkeye or Nightwing
I'd love to see Vampire Hunter D adapted to a live action movie

I have a simple answer. None, unless they're done by the studios/teams who did the originals. Much as I love Evangelion, and trust me, I'm a huge fan, I do NOT want WETA to make their live action one. Rebuild is good enough for me, and it's from the people who know about the series.

Ninja Scroll, and Hellsing would be sweet.
The Walking Dead. But it'd work a lot better as an HBO or Showtime original series.

The only manga that I would like to see adapted into a live action format is Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. I know its been the subject of two direct-to-video flicks, but I'd love to see an updated flick based a little closer to the original subject matter.
On the domestically published comic books I'd like to see adapted to the big screen. One favorite of mine that I'd think would be sweet to see would be Darkhawk. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkhawk) Always thought the character would be a cinche to make into a movie.
Bit of Trivia:Mike Manely, co-creator and artist on the first twenty-five issues of Darkhawk based the character's helmet design on that of the Guyver's own headgear.
I know it'll never happen, but I think Azumanga Daioh would be a cute live-action film. I don't see this working too well, to be honest. While I love the manga and have enjoyed the anime, I don't feel the latter quite captured the essence to it's fullest. I don't see a live action film doing so either. What makes it even harder is that it's just a 'slice of life' storytelling that would be somewhat difficult to execute considering it takes place over 3 years worth of time.
I'd have to pass. Besides, I just can't see anyone playing any of the cast of Azumanga Daioh. >_<
Mr. Kimura should get his own solo, original film though. :p
As for the topic question, I'd honestly rather not see any adaptations. I feel most manga stories just wouldn't work in a live action setting. The mediums are too different. Even simple things like "the look" of some of the characters just don't translate well.
Death Note took a shot at the idea with two films, and it was decent, but nothing astounding. If they weren't made, I don't think anyone would cry any tears over it.
If forced to make a choice though, I'd go with Berserk under the idea that it could be as unrated as needed...which it would need to be.

You're assuming they would attempt to tell the entire story in a single film. I reckon three films for three years would be suitable.
But you're right. A film might not work.
Azumanga Daioh would work much better as a live action TV series. Produced and scripted by someone with the comic sensibilities of Bryan Fuller, in association with Kiyohiko Azuma.
I love "slice of life" television programmes.
I'd have to pass.
Don't kid yourself into thinking you're anything less than a drooling fanboy. You'd watch it, and you damn well know it. And if you hated it, you'd still buy it and stick it in your DVD collection. :D

A TV series would be more in line for it. Now that could have a good possibility. Oh, or a TV series about Mr. Kimura. :D
Student: So why did you become a teacher, Mr. Kimura?
Kimura: High school girls!! I love 'em!!

Nah, I'd still pass. You know I enjoy the Resident Evil game series, but I never watched the third movie. I have self control over things like that. ;) Heck, I don't even own the second film and only have the first because it was a gift.
I wasn't thrilled with the Silent Hill film and if Gans was directing again, I'd pass on a theatre showing and possibly video, only to wait until someone else watched it. Heck, I'm a fan of the first game (being as that's all I've played...don't worry, I aim to remedy that), but I don't own the film as I found it to be severly lacking.

Sakura Card Captors :P
However, if it is an American film, I would want it to follow the same route as the Ringu films. I would want the producers to change characters' names and aspects of the original storyline which simply wouldn't work.

I think Rourini Kenshin could be done, though they would be pressed for time to try and cover so much plot points. They could do from when he enters Kyoto up to when Jinei kidnaps Kaoru. Yoshi and Sanosouke is introduced and Kenshi gets into his first major fight of the series.

My avatar represents precisely how I was looking at my TV when Kimura let slip his reasons for becoming a high school teacher. I felt like Jim Halpert watching Dwight Schrute do something highly inappropriate. It was wonderfully bizarre.

I'd like to see an epic Captain America movie. I think, if done right, it would have the potential to not only be a fantastic comic adaptation, but also transcend the genre and be a great film altogether. There's so much to work with in terms of action and drama, but I'm guessing it won't play out like that when it finally comes to the big screen.

Robert Rodriguez owns the film rights to Madman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madman). The question is, will it ever get made? I was a fan of the comic and I'm a big RR fan. If it gets made, I'm sure it'll be entertaining.

Tough call. I'm really not into superhero comics at all anymore, so I couldn't give a damn about those. The last comic to film I really loved was V for Vendetta and it was only after watching the special features that I learned it was based on this old old comic from the early 80s that pretty much everyone had forgotten about.
So with that in mind, I say go with Kabuki. It was popular in the 90s, still holds up today, and they were in talks to make a movie out of it anyway (it fell through, of course).
As for a manga... even more tough. Why make a live action Azumanga series when there's already an anime series? Love that manga and show by the way. I've been fairly burnt out on anime for a while now and that show was the injection of fresh life I'd been waiting for. Just a good, fun character driven story instead of the usual jig.
I love Ghost in the Shell, but I'd really worry if they ever made it into a live action flick. Same deal with Metal Gear Solid. I keep hearing how they're going to make a movie out of that, and it just bugs me. I look back at all the crappy video game movies we've gotten over the years and just wonder how they'll trample on MGS. (even though that's not technically anime).
So I don't know. None? NO!! I got it!!! Lupin the 3rd! Make a live action flick about a master thief, his 2 partners, and a seriously busty femme fatale. PERFECT!

Pitt- (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitt_%28comics%29) a comic from Image comics back in the 90's. Picture E.T. if the Extra-Terrestrial was a Hulk-sized alien warrior with the ferocity of an attack dog. Turns out Pitt is actually a human/alien hybrid who was enginered from an a fertilized egg from an abducted woman. When Pitt comes to Earth a young boy named Timmy, happens to be his brother.

Howard The Duck needs a proper film treatment, not like the one from 86. Instead of a guy in a duck suit, make him a animated character in a live-action universe like Roger Rabbit.

I think that's actually a really good idea. When Howard is on his home planet, the whole thing could be animated. When he gets pulled to Earth, he could be the only animated element in a live-action setting.
(Although I have to be fair and point out that I adore the 1986 film.)

Hellsing is one I've thought would make a good live-action film for some time. I'd like to see it done in a similar style to Sin City.

That's right. Forgot about that. Well, then they should make a better one, if it sucked, haha.
It's somewhat odd though in that most anime fans believe that the film is a symbol that displays anime/manga adaptation into live action don't work.
Then again though, you can't please everyone.

I have a feeling that Dragon Ball is going to clean up at the box office next summer, but most of the anime fans won't admit to having watched it and liking it (the manga fans, on the other hand, might be a little less biased).

Oh, so you are the other one ?
I thought I was the only one. Another common point between you and me !
I need to find a DVD of this movie but it seems that movie has never been released that way (ashamed George L. ?)
I would like to see a new more adult adaptation, with better SFX.
Apart from Howard, I would like to see a live version of Ushio To Tora, which needs great SFX to work. Patlabor would be great too (Christophe Gans was trying to make one at some point). Wingman also.
It makes me think that I would like to see a sentai or metal hero movie made for an adult audience, and by that I mean, with a good plot and serious motives for the bad guys, but with the same kind of "necessary scenes" (transformation, giant robot...). These series have great atmospheres and designs, but the plots are too much weak with too easy answers to the problems.
Final one : Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiacs, in 5 live movies : 1 against the Phoenix and the Silver Knights. 1 against the Sanctuary and the Golden Knights, 1 against Asgard and the Odin Knights, 1 against Poseidon and 1 against Hadès. It needs a great costume/set designer and a great fight choregrapher and great SFX, but if it's made seriously, with enough money, it would be excellent.

Yeah, a DVD would be nice. But no one wants to release it, and the out-of-print VHS tape is impossible to find these days (I ordered it through Hastings once; after waiting two months, they finally informed me that they simply couldn't find a copy of it.)

Hey ChoKo, glad to see another Creech fan out there. I also agree that would make for a sweet flick. Another McFarlane creation that was part of the Spawn mythos that would make for a kick ass film experience, would a film based on Cy-Gor, cybernetically enhance silverback gorilla. The whole story behind it's creation reads like a modern Frankenstien tale. There was a short lived comic series written by Rick Vietch which played this up. Also with the lack of killer ape movies being made lately, we can always use a new one.
