Now as a fan of both The Mummy and it's sequel, The Mummy Returns, I'm looking foreward toward this third installment to the hit franchise, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. So I'm starting this thread to talk about the upcoming flick coming out August 1, 2008. The flick stars Brendon Fraser, Mariah Bello, Jet Li, Alex Pettyfer, Luke Ford, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, John Hannah, and Issabella Leong. The plot synopsis goes like this:
JetLi plays a despotic emperor in 50 B.C. whose evil is punished by a sorceress(Michelle Yeoh).Han(Li) and his army are turned into terracotta for all time, that is, unless he is reawakened, which of course is ehre the O'Connels come into the picture. The story move to the year 1946. When we find Rick(Fraser) and Evelyn(Bello) are retired to Oxfordshire, England, having been spies during World War II. Bored out of thier gourds and welcome the opputunity to courier a precious artifact back to a museum in Shanghai, China, from where it was stolen. Back in China, which is going through turmoil, Johnathon(John Hannah) owns an Egyptian-themed bar in Shanghai. Unbeknownst to his parents, the now grown up Alex O'Connell(Luke Ford) is following the family business as a young archeologist on a dig in Northern China. He makes the discovery of the lifetime:the tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which has been buried for a millennia. A beautiful assassin (Isabella Leong) tries to kill him to keep the location a secret, but Alex survives the attempt. The Emperor's monument is transported back to Shanghai where another plot is in motion: a military zealot(Anthony Wong) intend to wake the Emperor and aid him in the re-conquest of China with the raising of the ten thousand strong clay warriors. The family is reunited and high adventure ensues: crash landings, treks through the Himilayas, Yeti, avalanches, Shangra-La, three-headed dragons(King Ghidorah:thinking:), pools of eternal life, epic battles, and shape-shifting Jet-Li.

The Mummy:The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is directed by Rob Cohen(The Fast & The Furious, XxX),and written by Alferd Gough and Miles Miller(Smallville, Spider-Man 2). Stephen Sommers, currently busy with a flick about "A Real American Hero";), is overseeing in a producer's capacity.

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. As long as it avoids the falirues of Mummy Returns and Van Helsing this could be an excellent film.

O'Connell looks more badass now! Sweet! Once you get a character away from Summers, I think the character becomes more better.

Some of the sets look beautiful, I'm actually growing in my interest for this. This franchise seemed dead a short while back and suddenyl we have this and a SK prequel. And hey, it's not a remake!

Anyone else suspect that the reason we're getting a new Mummy is the success of the Pirates of the Carribean films? I'm expecting it to be marketed as the same style of action adventure.

I'll agree about the Mortal Kombat thing. However, I think this movie is going to kick all sorts of ass. I did like the first two. I think it's too bad that CG wasn't as advanced as it is now, or else the scorpion king would have looked more BAMF

The poster is awesome, certainly and the film has a better director. Let's face it, can't be as bad as The Mummy Returns!

New poster for The Mummy:The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (http://www.shocktilyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=5187). But beware, like photos of Bigfoot ,and Rosie O'Donnel's arm flaps in a windstorm, it's blurry.

Now that's awesome and as I suspected, really looks set to big up the action adaventure element. This is clearly being hoped to follow the success of Pirates. And I wishit the best of luck.

Mummy Returns rocked. :p

Still, been wondering if the series would return, and it's good to see it is, Mortal Kombat logo aside. :p

The Mummy Returns isn't the worst film ever, it's a LOT better than the abortion that was Van Helsing... but it's still pretty bad. Not just the bad CGI Scorpian King but generally it feels like Sommer sgoing off on one sacrificing the adventure and decent characters of Part 1 for ott effects that don't work that great. Kind of like Pirates 3 actually. :p

More Mummy III stuff rolling out now. Unfortunatly, no trailer as of yet. However, bounce over here to where you can check out director Rob Cohen's site, or the official The Mummy:Tomb of the Dragon Emperor website that will hold us over until most likely the end of the month when the trailer FINALLY (http://www.joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=12028) shows up. But on Rob Cohen's site, we do get to see a snippet or two of some of the stuff we can expect to see. Including a very brief shot of the Yeti in action.

Uhh... I saw the full trailer for this when I went to go see The Incredible Hulk last Thursday night at midnight.

To be honest - It looks really good, and if Gough and Miller penned this script - I'll watch it. Shit - I'd watch something they wrote about a guy putting PB&J on bread just because it had their names attached. Only because they created my favorite show on TV. :)

This movie looks like crap. Is there even going to be a mummy in it? I like the old mummy films with Boris Karloff and Lon chaney Jr. I am not fond of the new Mummy movies.

It's about a Chinese mummy, isn't it?

The Dream Master
06-24-2008, 07:11 AM
Yeah, but if Rich saw the same trailer I did, then I can see where he's coming from. It seems like they barely mention anything about a mummy in it; then again, I was only half-paying attention to it because I'm not too interested in the film, so I could have missed it.

The marketing campaign for films lately have been... a bit lackluster. The Happening, Hancock and The Forbidden Kingdom come swiftly to mind when thinking about marketing campaigns that don't paint the whole picture, or are at least somewhat misleading.

So... Imhotep isn't in this? Well, I guess I won't bother..... they should have just called it "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" in that case.

Scarecrow
06-29-2008, 11:28 PM
Why? It's a Mummy afterall ,and has the same characters. Less a pin-off than The Scorpian King. Besides Imhotep had little more to go, after his love betrayed him. Good to see this series exploring tis further potential.

Went to see this tonight, took awhile to due to problems with the projector. But nontheless got to see it. Fun, delightful romp. Although while I think Maria Bello is a nice replacement for Rachel Wiesz, but her abscence was still noticiable. But Ms. Bello did a good job nontheless. Also, many of the negative nancies who complained about the CGI in the previous flick lacking , will be pleased that it came off a ton better in the third entry. (Rumor had it that Universal didn't give the guys at ILM enough time to complete work on Returns , and it obviously showed.) Especially the Dragon Emperor's transformation into a vicious three-headed dragon, and a demonic looking yeti. So go see and have a fun time.

I barely, if ever read what the critics say about movies I plan on seeing. Mostly they take a dim view towards anything released during the summer, usually the flicks I want to see, and are waiting for the end of the year Academy Award nominies.

I don't know about that. I think Van Helsing was better then all of the Mummy movies, besides the old classics with Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr.

I saw this the Saturday after it came out with my dad. We both really enjoyed and there was a lot of action almost the whole time. It seemed to go by pretty fast to but that might have been because it had your attention the whole time.

I didn't really care for the other two movies in the series...and the Scorpion King so I'm going to pass on this.

I thought Arnold Vosloo was pretty ok though.

Much better than teh Mummy Returns in my opinon, not a perfect film but a lot of fun with plenty of action and adventure. Enjoyable, and good to see the characters again.

I don't know about that. I think Van Helsing was better then all of the Mummy movies, besides the old classics with Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. Same here. In the old classics the mummy was just a walking corpse in bandages, not some kind of superhuman being with god-like powers. These movies blow everything out of proportions while the old Universal and Hammer mummy movies managed to keep everything more simple yet still make an entertaining movie.
